Landing at Tassafaronga

Post by RUPD3658 »

Invasion fleet landed at Tassafaronga rather than Lunga to avoid the mines and CD guns. I hope it pays off.

Almost every BB in my navy hit Lunga and did squat to the AF. As a result my planes got killed at a 4:1 ratio again. This could be a long, bloody battle.

The convoy headed to Darwin got hit again. It looks like only about 65% will make it through. I should have taken the long way around OZ but I got impatient again.

Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

Jap bombers from Munda broke through and launched torpedoes at my Brit CVs. Luckily none hit.

I am now faced with a dilema. It will be at least one more 2-day turn until I have finished unloading troops. After several air battles my CV fighters are at about 50% of full strength. I have decided to stay and cover the unlaoding rather than flee before this is done. TFs have broken off to bombard Munda so hopefully this and the bad weather will limit the number of strikes against my fleet. I think I am safe from Rabaul for another turn or two since the Zeros needed should still be transferring from China. My only real fear is the KB. If it showes up next turn I am in big trouble. I am hoping that it was in the Home Islands when I landed since I last spotted it off Wake. If it returned to Truk or the Marianas after the Wake raid it could arrive in time to beat up my fleet.

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

The KB did not arrive so my massed CV fighters were able to fend off all attacks. I don't know if it was the massed numbers or the low Zero pilots qaulity but for once my Wildcats came out on top. I did lose my lateset top ace with 12 kills however.

The fleet has been given orders to pull back to New Caledonia. 2 Bombardment fleets will hit Munda and Lunga on the way out. Time to head to the repair yards for the 10/42 upgrades.

Kusaie Island was finally captured

Specifics. The bombardment of Munda was weak but the A2A was pretty good.

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

The fleet withdraw from Guadalcanal is almost complete. All the major units have withdrawn but 4 DDs that had to refuel from an AO first got hit. 1 has sunk and 2 others probably will sink soon. Not too bad overall.

Bombardments on the way out failed to impress but the combined airstrikes should have shut down Lunga and Munda. It will be a few weeks before I can move on Lunga.

Right now about 2/3 of my ships are headed to repair yards for the 10/42 upgrades.

More softening up of airfields. Aside from the occasional raid it looks like we will be in summer reruns for a few turns. I am upgrading ships and Gordon is training new pilots

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

Aside from a landing at Kai island, just more softening up of Kwaj and Lunga.

I have spotted some CAs at Rabaul so I have a feeling Tassaforonga may get a visit soon. I will have to move some subs into the area for defense of the beachhead.

More fast transport raids on Kai island. It will take one more to bring in enough supplies for the attack. Major upgrades to the fleet next turn. My ships are spread out throughout the repair yards to spread the work around.

In one turn my shipyard crews did more damage to the fleet than the Japs have done in the last 3 months. It is nice to have the upgrades but my ships will be out of service for a while.

Jap bombardment TF hit Tulagi with minimal damage. I have sent subs to lay some mines to fend off future such attacks.

Bombing of Lunga continues with 8 more supply hits. Hopefully by the time my guys make it through the jungle the defenders here will have starved.

Looks like another world of hurt is coming down the slot. At least 5 BBs have been spotted headed south east.

Gordon tried to LR CAP Lunga with Zeros from either Russell or Munda. They took out a few of my bombers but suffered heavier losses due to OPs and A2A.

In the DEI Kai isalnd was finally captured. Once the AF is expanded I can start cutting off Ambonia

Got my ass kicked in the air in India as hoards of old fighters got shredded by Zeros and Tonys. I have pulled back until the P-38s arive later this month.

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

And the gory details. It looks like the KB has pulled up off Tassaforonga along with the entire battle line of the Jap Navy. Of course all my units are in PH and the West coast upgrading and repairing. I don't know if the Tf that pulled into Lunga is dropping off supplies, picking up troops, or laying mines.

I have dispatched subs to the area but will be unable to do much for the next few days but sit back and take it. Hopefully I can turn the CVs around quickly and drive the KB away before the landing is truely threatened.

Note the location of the CVs. The rest seem to be BBs including the one up by Rabaul, which I think is headed back to refuel.

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

Bombarded once again. The Jap fleet seems to have all headed back to Rabaul. I guess the fear of my CVs showing up had an effect on them. In reality my CVs are all at PH getting repaired and will likely be there for 2 more weeks. Subs have been dispatched to mine and patrol the slot until the CVs return. I also fast transported another AA unit to Tassaforonga to bolster the flak level there.

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

First mines have been laid at Tassaforonga and subs are in position to intercept ships coming down the slot. All Jap ships seem to be staying at Rabaul for the moment.

Attack will come this turn at Maumere. I hope to destroy some damaged AC on the ground when the base falls.

RE: Crisis at Tassaforonga

Post by RUPD3658 »

Maumere captured. I forgot that there was a dot base next door so instead of destroying the base force I drove it into the jungle to starve.

Supplies are running low at Tassaforonga due to spoilage. I will have to move to help soon.
