AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR May 02, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Koggala at 30,55

Japanese Ships
SS I-158

Allied Ships
xAK Fingal, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage

xAK Fingal is sighted by SS I-158
SS I-158 attacking on the surface

The IJN subs definetely have been getting annoying lately... they scored more often in the last week than the last month... still, losses to IJN subs are staying far below concerning number and it´s no tragedy for the Allied to lose a couple of lonely AKs to subs... but it again shows me that single freighters going around unescorted are dead meat...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Ominato at 117,51

Japanese Ships
xAK Norway Maru
PB Tokihime Maru

Allied Ships
SS Drum

SS Drum is sighted by escort
PB Tokihime Maru fails to find sub, continues to search...

ASW attack near Truk at 110,112

Japanese Ships
DD Urakaze

DD Kasumi
DD Hamakaze

Allied Ships
SS KXIV

SS KXIV launches 4 torpedoes at DD Urakaze
KXIV diving deep ....
DD Kasumi fails to find sub and abandons search
DD Hamakaze fails to find sub and abandons search

the Dutch sub missed... big TF moving out of Truk... what´s going on?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Karachi at 37,6[X(]

Japanese Ships
SS I-166

Allied Ships
xAK Clan Lamont

xAK Clan Lamont is sighted by SS I-166
SS I-166 launches 4 torpedoes

now that was luck, the IJN sub missed... this bugger was waiting in the hex where shipping from Aden enters the map when going to Karachi... and those convoys always enter at the same hex... will have to use waypoints for the convoys right where they enter the map... losing this AK would have been really bad as it was carrying a squadron of Hurricanes...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Koggala at 28,51

Japanese Ships
SS I-158, hits 3

Allied Ships
xAKL Washingtonian, Shell hits 8, heavy fires

xAKL Washingtonian is sighted by SS I-158
SS I-158 attacking on the surface
SS I-158 low on gun ammo, Nagaishi K. breaks off surface engagement and submerges

the damned I-158 kills another freighter today... no torp fired but the IJN subs are so much more potent in gunfighting than the US subs with their popguns that the small freighter went down right after the combat...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amphibious Assault at Batoe-eilanden

TF 26 troops unloading over beach at Batoe-eilanden, 43,82

Sub attack near Fukue-jima at 100,59

Japanese Ships
xAKL Taganoura Maru
PB Choun Maru #8

Allied Ships
SS Seadragon

SS Seadragon launches 4 torpedoes at xAKL Taganoura Maru
Seadragon diving deep ....
PB Choun Maru #8 fails to find sub, continues to search...
PB Choun Maru #8 fails to find sub, continues to search...
PB Choun Maru #8 fails to find sub, continues to search...
PB Choun Maru #8 fails to find sub, continues to search...
PB Choun Maru #8 fails to find sub, continues to search...
Escort abandons search for sub

our fleet subs keep on firing duds but they are hitting like wild... will be interesting how much was changed with the upcoming patch...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amphibious Assault at Enggano

TF 342 troops unloading over beach at Enggano, 44,94

Japanese ground losses:
96 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 12 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 10 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 2 (0 destroyed, 2 disabled)

17 troops of a SNLF Squad accidentally lost during unload of 2nd Sasebo SNLF Coy

looks like the IJN amphib bonus has run out... that is good news...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amphibious Assault at Sawoe-eilanden

TF 350 troops unloading over beach at Sawoe-eilanden, 65,115

Japanese ground losses:
116 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 18 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 2 (0 destroyed, 2 disabled)

same here, not normal for those mini units to suffer that many disablements when the amphib bonus would still be active... so any more IJN amphib operations have to be really planned now and no more unloading of halve a dozen divs in a port 1 in one day...

wonder if Rainer will give up here or if he will try to take the base... will be a hard task with the troops already sieging Akyab and I´m not sure how much more he can bring in (well, there are 2000 av fighting in Java and that fighting will soon be over). We can move in more troops too so time is on our side I guess...

even if it´s clear sky, our bombers can´t do anything... air to ground attacks are 100% useless in this patch version... going from nuklear to no effect and perhaps back again... it´s hard to find a reasonable setting unfortunately... P-38 equipped AVG1 joined this attack as escorts by accident, the enemy is now aware of our new fighters being in the area... as I already thought, Cox´s Bazar had a flak unit, therefore flak fire is quite strong... the Blenheims are hit hard... Two of my Indian divs are on the move into this hex to kick the Japanese out... with air to ground attacks complete waste of time and efforts I´m not sure we will have much of a chance with two of our divisions vs. the one superhuman Ind.Mixed Bgd and two support units... we´ll see...

I hope I noticed early enough, even if it looks very grim at the moment...

Do you believe your opponents have his surface TFs set to react? If so there is still a sneaky use for your PTs [:D]
I made 6 PTs in Soerebaja, had them remain, Soerebaja as homeport, no reaction, maximum threat acceptance.
The result - 2 CAs, 1 CL and 1 DD lost to the minefield at Soerebaja.

I also notice that you only count 16 hurricane replacements per month, is not that for the IIb only? I use both models and they do well against anything my opponents send against me.

at the moment I´m using all four available models of the Hurricane, the I, IIa, IIb and IIc (four of them on the whole map). The only one that is produced at the moment is the IIb though, the I and IIa aren´t produced anymore and the IIa not yet.

No place where I could create PTs to make use of them and other than lurking the enemy into minefields I can´t see much use of them anyway so if not really a must I won´t create anymore PTs.

I have moved my carriers unspotted to a position 6 hexes SW of Buna to launch a sweep against this base to clear the way for my heavy bombers... the carriers position themselve and of course launch a series of uncoordinated sweeps... just stupid uncoordination again... same target, same aircraft, same alt... I was amazed not to see a bigger Cap (it´s not even really bigger than the leaking Cap to PM) and our Wildcats have quite some problem taking down the Nicks and mostly damage them...

this is no sweep, this is an escort attempt of my carriers to escort the 4Es coming from Australia... the fighters missed them though and do another sweep over the base now encountering some Nicks again... even though those Nicks are sitting ducks, they are hard to down and it seems they´ve got a rear MG that has damaged quite a lot of my Wildcats... in the end 5 of my F4F-4 crash... then the 4Es are going in, devastating the base (level 2 airfield)... recon was about 40+ ac at the base and lots have been damaged, only some were actually destroyed on the ground... Would I have known that the Cap over this base was so small I would have sent in the 4Es alone instead of sending my carriers in... unfortunately recon doesn´t give you any intel on Cap over the target anymore... and the last one... in the end, 17 enemy ac were destroyed in the Buna attacks today and the base is wrecked too but the loss of 5 Wildcats, 1 heavy bomber and the fuel spent for our carrier TF wasn´t worth it IMO... it was a kind of anti boredome operation and that´s something you should never do anyway... at this date, I should keep my assets together and further building up instead of doing such operations that lead nowhere...

it really starts to get me thinking if all is just about die rolls and why the enemy subs are so much more potent than mine... this TF has 10 destroyers and the CV TF is followed by another TWO!!! ASW TFs made up of four destroyers each... so in total we´re talking about 15 ships escorted by 18 destroyers... yet the sub again attacks and again a carrier is hit... every IJN sub attack against one of my capitol ships was a 100% success... on the other hand, the enemy BBs run over at least halve a dozen of my subs all the time when they are going to attack Akyab and they aren´t even shot at... could the Japanese run out of luck at some point please? Or at least have it more equally devided between us? Hornet suffers no follow on damage and is now at 18 sys and 18 flt (9 major)... with Yorktown using Sydneys shipyard for the next two months though I won´t be able to repair Hornet´s major flt damage there...

it just sucks... 18 escorts... a sub that more or less stumbles into our CV TF [8|] twice we had two dozen of our subs out to attack KB, both times without any success, we weren´t even near a success...

we either fire torps, don´t fire at all or are driven off... but hey, in 44 this will have changed... I can´t see any improvement in our attacks since we´ve upgraded the subs with radar sets... these were duds of course...

my two divisions weren´t able to kick out the bgd, not even after 100 bombers attacked the enemy unit... our base av looks ok, the attacking troops don´t, not sure if really both units were attacking, it doesn´t look like... well, another chance to hurt an enemy unit passed because next turn the bgd entered Akyab... hey, great!

"so far I´ve never spotted any of those raiders coming in... my nav search just sucks... even worse, every enemy TF that is moving to Akyab has to pass over more than halve a dozen of my subs (all with working torps) but my subs are just as useless as more or less everything else... "

Man that's nothing. My other PBEM, I setup a line of subs from Peleliu to Sorebaja(sp)... probably 20 of them. The Mini-Kb travelled this route three times, and never once did I sniff an attack, my less actually fire a torp, at this juicy target.

unfortunetely most of the times the IJN subs got a (succesful) shot at my capitol ships everytime they just stumbled over them. [&:] oh the dice...

I'm seing the same in my games.
Have any of you managed to put the upgraded subs out (the ones with radars installed) and seen if that increases the chance of attack? I was shocked to see KB run over close to 40 allied subs (all types) and not be shot at once!
And I also see the fact that escorts does not seem to help. It almost seems like the capitol ships take up position outside in a convoy with the DDs running in the middle...[:(]
Those HDMLs I've found no use for, best I managed was to "sweep" four mines with four HDMLs [:D]

Those HDMLs I've found no use for, best I managed was to "sweep" four mines with four HDMLs [:D]

Terje

Most of my subs have radar now (the US ones) and many of them are operating against the enemy already. Haven´t seen an increase in attacks so far but that´s hard to measure and only a subjective observation. The HDMLs are best kept in port and that´s their purpose anyway as those are used by the AI to create "harbour defenses". Never seen one of those harbour defenses actually do something so I´m not sure this is WAD and so those vessels are nothing but free victory points for my opponent.

it just stays the same... single IJN escorts most times work better than the oh so cherished Allied escorts... 6 DDs covering two Australian cruisers but again the enemy sub has no problem to put a torp into one of my ships... same as the ground troops, IJN subs are manned by superhumans too... I can´t compete the enemy with the crap I´m given... just another example of our TF stumbling over a sub that results in one of my capitol ships being torpedoed... happens 3 out of 4 times, no matter how many DDs I put into the TFs... but hey, the sub takes a near miss in return...

we take revenge for our xAKL though as Cairns´ and Townsville´s heavy bombers strike an enemy amphibious TF off Rossel... the TF was spotted yesterday already and I´ve set all my patrols to search in this area today... bingo, the TF is hit hard... a xAKL is in serious trouble after being hit by a 500lb bomb and the same goes for a xAK after being hit by two of those bombs... the heavies do quite good now in anti shipping strikes...

an unexpected strike against Lae occured too... first moment I was shocked to see the bombers going to Lae as I expected far more Cap there but we only met 8 Zeroes covering the transports there... more than halve of our bombers were damaged but they still were able to heavily damage two of the freighters... excellent in two ways, we probably sunk two freighters and I know now that Lae has not heavy Cap covering the base... 4Es will soon visit the airfield...

pretty sure the enemy received supplies via fast transport... Tokyo express North of Rangoon... [:D] the losses once more make me shaking my head... the assault is repulsed, we´re sitting behind forts in a jungle hex (where halve a dozen of our artillery can do nothing against the sieging troops) and yet again we suffer a hell a lot of KIA while the enemy again mostly suffers disablements that can be recovered easily... just a joke nothing else... and it has always been the same in WITP, it´s the entrenched defender that suffers the most, even though it should be different...

and we keep on firing at the enemy´s escorts instead on one of the numerous capitol ships... should probably be happy that we fire at all? Torps missed and the enemy can just keep on moving over my 8 subs... going back and forth all the time without anywhere near being in danger... good to know that my heavily escorted TFs suffered three torp hits on carriers and one on a heavy cruiser... we don´t even fire at the BBs... interesting how much more effective the IJN escorts are considering the fact that the couldn´t help in real life... but it´s all about the dice I guess and the fact that the enemy DDs got a much higher exp than mine... must be due to fun gamewise...

It's way too much micromanagement to keep your PBYs squadrons full but I never fly them when it rains and keep a 8 hex max until they're in their 70s. Look on the bright side, they weren't spotting anything anyway. [;)]
