Wow - 1942 and only 1 Kate lost A2A! They are getting great fighter coverage!
But 14 lost to flak - your AA is getting good.
I noticed this is the B5N1 version of the Kate. Is the B5N2 out yet? I think the carriers change to this version until the Jills come along [or is it Judys??].

Shame about Magwe - the 300 oil points will be a boon to the Empire.
Beats me, I really don't know when most IJ planes show up. And with R&D, I would just guess wrong anyway. Magwe shall be bombed into dust, of course!

I had thought there might be another part of the aircraft losses screen that would list B5N2s if they were in play - from your comment I guess they are not.

You do realize that in the monsoon season you will not be able to bomb Magwe into dust. You will have to settle for bombing it into mud ... [;)]

Oh - I only showed the screen sorted by "Today's Losses", so I'll have to check.

I used to play in mud all the time when I was a kid, so that might give me an advantage! [:D]

The Empire captured:

The Allies captured:

There were Imperial amphibious operations at:
Pagai-eilanden

There were Allied amphibious operations at:

Sculpin was torpedoed by IJN sub RO-62 off of Australia's east coast. Somehow she survives - for the moment - and has 80nm to make Bundaberg. The overworked 2nd Raiding Rgt landed at Mandalay to mess up the Allies orderly retreat. 11 x Ki-57 Topsy and 4 x MC-21 Sally were damaged by flak in the effort, and 1 of each was destroyed.
Ground combat at Mandalay (59,46)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 597 troops, 3 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 31

Defending force 4888 troops, 26 guns, 40 vehicles, Assault Value = 85

Allied adjusted defense: 48

Allied ground losses:
25 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Defending units:
Mandalay BMP Battalion
9th Burma Rifles Battalion
2nd King Own YLI Battalion
221 Group RAF
1st Burma Auxiliary AA Regiment
103rd RAF Base Force
I thought that a drop might come but I figured Shwebo was a more likely target. No sign of the KB. There were no air attacks by carrier planes on Australian forces withdrawing across the Outback. Those Kates lost to flak must have smarted! The convoy carrying USA 27th ID will make Karachi in about 6 days. The 4 B-17 squadrons are deploying to Calcutta where they will begin operations in a day or two. Here is a look at Burma.

Merauke

There were Allied amphibious operations at:

Another small IJN TF has appeared near the Ellice Islands, this one spotting as 2 ships, a DD and a CL, and is 120nm NW Nanumea. The KB or a substantial part of it could be in the area so caution is required. They probably aren't, but at some point the bait dangled will be real.

There were fighter sweeps over Mandalay but no noted attempt to bring in more paratroopers. The B-17s from Calcutta will come in low (5,000ft) to plaster the paratroopers positions and the battalions in place will attack. The units (3 x Bn + 1 x Bde) east of Taung Gyi will attack the Bn they are facing as well. The plan is for them to then move to Lashio as a flank guard. The 18th British Division is at Shwebo to hold against additional air drops. Very dynamic situation in Burma.

"Transports flying to 59,46 intercepted" - that's Mandalay, so supplies are being flown in. Heavy sweeps of Mandalay cost the Empire fighters at about a 10 to 3 trade off. The Imperials attacked at Meiktila and were rebuffed, but less harshly than I had hoped.

One of those Bns has just made Mandalay and will join the attacks tomorrow.

There is a little more activity around the Ellice Islands. The same tactical considerations apply as yesterday. Strategically, the carriers are making certain that the troops make Australia safely. Still no sign of the KB.

A little better day for us in Burma. No apparent resupply of the 2nd Raiding Rgt at Mandalay. I suppose that the transport losses the prior days were not worth it. Only a bombardment at Meiktila, so holding back the armoured units to help receive yesterday's Imperial attack worked well enough that our troops are getting a bit of breathing room in their withdrawal. East of Taung Gyi the attack went as hoped this time.

Another sub on sub loss, this Dutch SS KXI to two torpedoes from I-9. Over Akyab P-40 sweeps and B-17 raids took a total of 12 Imperial fighters against 1 x P-40 and 1 x B-17. They teamed up perfectly, the P-40s destroying planes in the air while the B-17s destroyed planes on the ground.

Due to a lack of units to reclaim the road and defend Ichang, this spells captivity for that city for the foreseeable future. First the forward defenders across the river must be recalled, then the army must withdraw is good order and open its own line of retreat. The greatest strategic threat is to the Changsha area.

The news from China might be even worse. The Empire has discovered virtual teleportation, whereby the Allies poor recon abilities imbue the Imperials with the ability to appear out of thin air. There are now two units outside Changteh about to attack the already-smashed guardian troops, plus another unit behind them blocking withdrawal from Ichang. That guardian unit had been mauled by but one unit, and now there are three. Are they rabbits, those Imperials? The choice is to try and fight back toward the Changsha area to secure its northern perimeter, or escape toward Chungking and virtually concede a bloody downfall around Changsha.

There was better news at sea. First off, CVE Long Island has arrived and is on her way to San Diego. The Dutch continue to acquit themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

The forward defenders have made Ichang, and all forces there will attack tomorrow. More than 2100 AV versus less than 400 AV, so hopefully the results will be good enough. This is a spoiling attack. Ichang will not be defended afterward, and the army will move toward Changteh and seek to slice through the forces there.

That KB is not seen by search this day. Sub Sculpin has pumped out her torpedo induced flooding.Lucky to be afloat, she is making ready (switching to "Readiness") at Bundaberg for the trip to Sydney and full repair.

For quite some time the Intel Monkeys have been intercepting messages about units planning for lower India. The last time I looked I lacked any location information on those units. I just took another look, and now have additional data. Tracker was restarted a number of game months ago, but there is currently a substantial enough database to go on.

Code: Select all

 Current Turn Number 158 (1942-05-13)

75	Planning for an attack	Coimbatore (29,39)	9th Tank Regiment
112	Unit location Yenki (110,44) 9th Tank Regiment

All of those units are up on the Soviet border. I've been successfully deceived. The equivalent of two divisions are already on the way to Australia (one of them two days out from Sydney). Add to that the now strong Australian Army and the core of Australia's defense is firm. South Pacific, while weakly defended, would still constitute an over-extension for the Empire. That would be welcome.

Sending the two American divisions back from India to Australia/SoPac would be merely an additional loss of time and they might even get caught at sea. So, they will be used in Southeast Asia. Early on I will try to conceal their presence - I don't know if the tracking of that Americal convoy from Australia revealed the movement or not - by using them to backfill while other units go on the offensive. I have seen a number of units going into China. If China is the true area of second phase offensive for the Empire, then a swift counter attack in Burma will be best.

Here is a look at NW Australia.

There is no sign of any KB. A large troop convoy has been spotted 200nm SW Sydney, presumably by a sub-borne aircraft. They carry three infantry regiments plus a host of smaller units. Here is a look at that situation in China.

Well done at Ichang! Hopefully he draws down on the Changsha assault to move in that direction. If he doesn't, you may be able to kick the Changsha attackers in the backside.

Troop convoy SW of Sydney - does that mean south of Oz or close to Sydney along the coast?

When you look closely at the map NE of Changteh you see that at least one of the two IJA units is indeed moving back to the open hex. They probably will arrive first so it will be a real battle with our guys crossing the river. I might send some units from Changteh to participate, but will have to watch the stacking level if I do.

SW of Sydney -> should read SE of Sydney. Five hexes on a straight line to the (map) SE. With six hexes of cruise speed movement the convoy should arrive during the daytime phase and begin unloading the following day. There is another convoy ESE Line Islands with an infantry division and several artillery units. A third convoy is E Line Islands with a bunch of air units and a tank destroyer unit. So the USN carriers have some more duty before even thinking of moving on. Plus there are a large number of tanker convoys at sea right now bound for Australia. We've got almost two months of (industry needs) fuel there now and should be able to swamp them in fuel by the end of the Austral winter. Of course that will allow plenty for naval ops.

BUT - so far there is no further apparent move on Australia. Cooktown was reconnoitered by air but that's it. That KB sighting near the Duff Islands might have been the full Magilla or it might have been just a portion. DAW is doing a good job of hiding his intentions, with the sole exception of the SigInt on reinforcements flowing into China. He clearly wants to overwhelm China before any relief effort in Burma can succeed. Perhaps - only perhaps - his success in scamming me about an Indian invasion will work against him there. Those units I rushed to India will come in handy!

Thanks for the update on the overall picture - helps me to know what kind of considerations I should be taking into account when I make my newbie plans.

Are there subs pestering you around Sydney or is allied ASW now good enough to scare them off?
