Well Damian seems to have had some sort of pathfinding malfunction as his battleline hit neither the landing beaches nor Ramree but, instead, ended up sitting 150 miles from Ramree in the morning. I am saving my naval attack planes for later so I'm leaving these ships unmolested for now.

I had left 3 ships unloading near Bassein to ensure all my units there had enough supply and covered them with the same CAP as yesterday. For some weird reason twice as many of my fighters showed up today and butchered the IJNAF strike groups. Over the course of the day the IJNAF lost a total of 48 planes for a total of 11 Allied planes lost ( mostly transports carrying supplies/dropping paras ).

Damian appears to have recommenced his bombing of Light Industry in China. With the Burma Road about to open some bombing can be tolerated. Once the Bassein landings are finished I plan to put a P-38 squadron into China to launch long-range ambushes of his bomber raids. He is still allocating about half of his bombers to bombing ground troops - this is a huge waste as it doesn't accomplish anything strategically important. I am leaving units in the open in order to invite this misallocation of resources. He should ask himself WHY I'm leaving units open to be targeted without mounting a defence when I could easily do so? Why? Because its a misallocation of resources I'm happy to encourage.



Tomorrow I'll paradrop onto Lashio, cutting the 2 Regiments driven out of Mandalay off from their escape route. In the meantime 2 Regiments are heading for Prome with another 2 heading for Rangoon. The IJA lines are well and truly broken and I do not believe he can hold me in Burma.

To be honest the subs are doing more important things right now:
1. Secretly reconning his entire defensive preparations in depth ( with low aggression captains to make sure they don't unmask ).
2. Running supplies to the Kuriles - although that mission looks like it is coming to an end.

Once the Kuriles fall - which looks likely now - I'll unleash the subs on his tankers. His tankers are my absolute priority target. It is ALL about the economy. Everything else is just a means of disrupting it more or less effectively, more or less quickly.


So, we've had another few days of turns and we're onto 18th October.Here's the highlights...

1. KB popped up south-east of Dutch Harbour looking to sink some of my crippled BBs heading home and sank 2 TK, 1 AO and an xAK. Slim pickings for such a major use of fuel.


2. The IJN battleline has pounded the Kuriles mercilessly but he managed to split a few fast BBs and CAs off and sent them in against Attu, Shemya and Attagu Islands at maximum speed before I could spot them. Unfortunately for me a major convoy was unloading and he sank about 20 xAK. I didn't lose any ground units but several engineer units lost most of their support and engineer vehicles - I have lots of replacements for both.

In terms of ship losses losing 20 xAKs isn't welcome but, to be honest, I am usually quite efficient with my shipping needs and have about 120 unused transports in the Indian theatre ( now that the movement of troops to Ramree etc is completed ) and have another 130 or so around Oz so I've just taken 60 or so from Oz and sent them to CONUSA. I'll replace them with a few of the Indian ones when the time for major amphibious invasions from Oz arrives.


3. Sneaking supplies into Pago-Pago has worked and I should soon have that back as a functioning base, rescuing about 2 divisions worth of troops and giving me the garrison troops for what I expect to take in the airmobile campaign.


4. Kuriles: Shimishiru-Jima fell to his first attack. I had enough supplies for my infantry regiments there but a single day of air attacks by about 250 bombers and massive naval bombardment by BBs and CAs destroyed all of that supply and when he attacked my troops were out of supply and easy pickings. I'm no longer entertaining even a slight chance that Uruppu-Jima will hold. Also it seems that the troops lost in these places are NOT available to be bought back so once they're gone, they're gone forever. *Sigh* "Floyd, give me back my Regiments!!!" [:D] I know how Augusts felt.


5. There was some sort of movement mess-up at Bassein. I had all of my infantry and armour units set to FOLLOW the 19th Indian Division so they'd all cross together.... and what happens, yes, some of my armoured units cross a couple of days early for some reason, launch a shock attack and take serious losses wiping out the 7th Australian Division's Cavalry Regiment.

Sure you can role-play it as some armour CO hotheads disobeying orders but it is still rather annoying to see this sort of thing happening and disrupting really major plans.


6. Elsewhere in Burma I managed to paradrop Chindits onto Lashio WHILE THEY WERE IN STRAT MODE !!!!! *sigh* Don't make this mistake guys. 1,000 Chindits are currently almost finished changing from STRAT to COMBAT mode AFTER having been dropped on Lashio right on top of an artillery unit.

The enemy masses 3 Regiments to retake Toungou but I was expecting this and had flown the rest of the Chindits in there. I managed to mass over 100 AV and withstood the IJA assault. If I understand the ground combat mechanics correctly all of the units fleeing from Meiktyla ( which I have captured ) are now going to be trapped at Toungoo and will be available for annihilation.

I'm running recon over Pegu now to scare him into thinking that's my next target whereas, really, it'll be the bases around Rahaeng that I'll be looking to next once I get airbases within transport range. I am hoping that by forcing him to keep forces garrisoning Pegu I'll be able to stop his forces from moving up to Toungoo and blasting my blockade there open... I'll be flying in another Brigade over the next few days just to make sure it holds.

Supplies are still a major problem but in an operation like this where central Burma has fallen in about 1 week speed is much more important and so my forces are fighting whilst out of supply and relying on captured Japanese supplies --- the only reason I'm winning here is that the landings at Bassein have split his defences so badly that he hasn't been able to concentrate his forces. In pure numerical terms he has more combat power available to withstand this attack than I am capable of generating in the attack.

As you can see in the picture below the IJN is 6 hexes from Ramree. I've decided that I've had enough of it for now and am sending my SC TFs in.

I'm sending in 1 TF with 4 BBs, a CLAA and several DDs, another with about 3 CAs, 2 or 3 CLs and a gaggle of DDs and then the last two TFs are pure destroyer TFs with 5 to 6 DDs each.

None of his damaged shipping can make for Rangoon as that's bound to fall soon so I figure he will have to send any damaged ships to Port Blair and from there to Singapore. Effectively that takes them out of the next stage of the littoral campaign.

I, on the other hand, should be able to save even badly damaged shipping. In any case I really want to ramp up IJN naval losses and am prepared to lose more than I sink in order to continue doing so. This decision has also been sparked, in part, by the realisation that given my experience near Bassein that I might just be quicker sending all the tank formations overland and driving down the coast road rather than engaging in a littoral campaign. Just the threat of a littoral campaign will pin the Japanese in place.

In the expectation that damaged shipping will make for Rangoon I've brought in everything capable of flying naval strike missions and have about 150 strike aircraft at Ramree along with about 200 fighters for escort duties. Let's roll the die.

Well, rather unsurprisingly the Japanese managed to attack and force my tank units out of Bassein the following day. Everything else was pretty quiet except for more IJA landings at Uruppu Jima and some more Chinese Corps getting beaten unmercifully by IJA tank formations. Overall though nothing really significant happened.

The day after the Allies were forced out of Bassein the main force crossed the river. Results were good with 2 IJA Regiments being thrashed and Bassein taken. I'm immediately going to begin building it up to a Level 2 airbase and once it is at that level I can bring my transports down, offload them over the beaches, bring the OMG up to full power and begin blitzing through to Thailand.

Lashio should fall in a couple of days at most. This leaves just Prome, Rangoon, Pegu and Moulmein in IJA hands Another ten days should see Burma completely in my hands and the Chindits consolidated into a divisional airmobile force. I don't quite have the transports to exert its full mass at this stage but in a few months time I will. In the meantime I'll just have to combine short and deep vertical envelopments.

Activity in the South Pacific remains unspotted. The rescue of the 5 Regts at Pago-Pago is almost complete and with another few weeks of work I think I'll be ready to unleash a fairly nice and rapid airmobile assault.

I'm beginning to reconsider the issue of not using carriers. If I lose the Kuriles then I simply have too many large ocean gaps to "jump" to get across them without defensive carrier support. Netties can sink the xAPs and xAKs too easily. I am considering using carriers defensively ( loaded with just fighters ) to cover my convoys etc.

Damian is playing a good game, really forcing me to work for victories.

Not a huge amount to say really, I've taken Lashio, the road to China is truly open and I've decided on when to kick the Pacific operations off.

Basically I've IDed several Japanese bases in the Kuriles which he hasn't garrisoned and I plan to paradrop troops onto them on the 30th and 31st October. I don't expect these bases to hold but the winter weather rules apply from 1st November and will make his counter-invasions exceedingly costly.

I'll also launch the CENPAC offensive at roughly the same time. It is earlier than I had wished but I judge the psychological impact of Burma crumbling, more invasions in the Kuriles and CENPAC disintegrating all at the same time is worth the lack of preparation. One reason I can do this is that I managed to complete the rescue of the Pago-Pago forces and now have 800 AV of troops available to garrison whatever I take. That makes a HUGE difference to the scope and feasability of the CENPAC offensive.


Burma:
I've chopped his forces up into multiple pockets through the use of frontal manoeuvre, vertical envelopment and the deeper amphibious prong. I've linked the base at Ramree into central Burma and thus allowed supplies to flow there. This ends most of my supply problems in Burma and allows my forces to operate at full combat effectiveness.

Things are going nicely and the narrative I wished to communicate is coming along nicely. The phasing across theatres is also coming together nicely although CENPAC will have to launch a little earlier than I would have liked in order to maintain the narrative impact I wish to convey.




Strategic Assessment:
IJA reserves have been sucked into theatres as follows:
1. NORPAC - 2 divisions destroyed, 2+ division equivalents sucked into counter-invasions. At least 1 more division sucked into garrison duties.

2. Australia - 2 divisions destroyed, 4 division equivalents garrisoning Darwin, 1 division-equivalent tied down guarding other Oz bases.

3. Chinese offensive action has, at significant cost to Chinese forces, caused Japan to tie down 4 additional divisions in China.

4. Burma - Approx 6 IJA division equivalents have been encountered. 5 of these have been outmanoeuvred and rendered irrelevant or have been defeated in combat. 1 division remains guarding Rangoon/Pegu. These divisions do not appear to have come from his strategic reserve.


Overall I can account for 22 division-equivalents. Of these at least 8 division-equivalents have come from his strategic reserve ( defined as units he has bought out since the start of the game ). I don't think he has anything left in the strategic reserve and I'm seeing indications that he is already pulling back in CENPAC. I doubt I'll find major garrisons in CENPAC and I think I'll make significant advances.

The plan to pin IJA forces and then unleash manoeuvre elements for various rapid thrusts appears to remain valid and I think the game is looking fairly good to be clearly over by the end of 1942 in terms of Japan's ability to mount a strong defence with any chance of success. I think that if we continue playing that I should be in Korea, the Kuriles etc looking to invade Japan proper by 1st January 1944 so, all in all, it is going according to plan.

Around Christmas 1942 I think we should probably consider whether we want to fight it out to the bitter end or whether it would be more interesting to start a new game - e.g. that Armageddon scenario game which is open to anyone who would like to pick it up - as either Allies or Japanese. Aye but by then the IJA's strategic reserve will no longer be sufficient to meet the needs of most of the theatres and Japan will have to cede large portions of land in several theatres in order to create a new, cohesive defensive line. Damian knows that if he tries to do that he'll either:
a) have to leave large forces behind as roadblocks - forces I'll destroy, thus weakening the lines he is trying to create deeper
b) find that I switch over to the pursuit and overrun his forces before they can solidify again.

He's basically facing the same problems the Germans faced in summer 42, 43 and 44.

I'm assuming it is something along the lines that Damian will be defending a riverline, with strong defensive bonuses, a stacking limit of 30,000 and a nearby base which he can use to rotate new, rested units into the line as his frontline units are depleted... which is something one might see if I was silly enough to match insufficient strength against strong defences ( which is what you usually see when the Allies try to attack Burma ). On the other hand I can't imagine what you've seen which would make you think I'd be interested in doing that. I'm genuinely curious.

Well we're up to the 30th October 1942.

NORPAC:
Uruppu-Jima finally fell today. I managed to rescue elements of the infantry regiments there so it isn't a total disaster but it is still a pity.

I have a plan to take 4 islands in the Kuriles and run reinforcement convoys in under cover of CVs flying CAP but it will require a distraction....


CENPAC:
The distraction.... 1 Marine Parachute Battalion is begin airdrops tomorrow on some of the islands I've identified as potentially being unoccupied. I expect that about 50% will prove to be occupied but with 6 targets tomorrow I should still take several bases, and from those bases I can continue the vertical movement deeper into his strategic depth. The operation is launching from Tabiteau (sic) which I've occupied and am building up.

Darwin:
Sitzkrieg continues. I don't have the supplies to attack but am delighted to just sit there watching 1200 AV of IJA forces which could be doing much more important work in Burma.


China:
Damian continues to be stalled everywhere except where he masses his tank regiments. I have no answer to them and wherever they go they cause massive losses.


Burma:
I've taken all of Burma except Rangoon and Burma. Hell, I took Prome without a fight after outflanking it. I have 2+ IJA divisions encircled behind my lines and will destroy them over the next couple of days using the forces which moved down from Northern Burma. In the meantime the forces marching overland from Ramree and the forces landed at Bassein are coalescing before marching on Rangoon. Together they mass some 1800 AV complete with massive artillery support. They should more than suffice to crush whatever is in Rangoon. The plan is then to close on Moulmein and simply push the whole force across the river and crush Damian with mass. Sure there'll be huge supply penalties to doing this but I believe I can afford the inefficiency in order to get results.


I am also making another effort to occupy Cocos Island midway between Oz and India as I need that to provide a safe base for bombers making their way to India. As it is I can fly the bombers from CONUSA to Oz in about 4 days but then have to load them on transports and sail them to India - which takes over 2 weeks. Logistically I NEED that base to get those bombers into action. They'll then support the attack on Moulmein which I expect to be able to launch in approximately 2 to 3 weeks time.

Below you can see the forces defending Rangoon. I'd quite like to be able to get to grips with the Imperial Guards Division and crush it.

I intentionally am trying to attack without massing my force as I wanted to test how multiple small, fragmented waves could wear down a larger CAP over time --- I wanted to learn lessons now which I could apply when facing CV TF CAP. It worked relatively well but I think that, overall, a single large strike would still have worked better. I'm quite sure Damian has no idea I have troops at Tabiteuea. I have some 25,000 men there now with 6 Regiments of troops only a few days out. I've pretty much taken the Gilbert Islands out in a day and will expand northward into the Marshall Islands. My plan is to take everything east of Truk and south of Wake island and pin significant IJA and IJN assets into defensive positions in the islands threatened by these positions.

Now that I've unmasked significant aerial and naval assets will flow into the region to bolster the forces moving forward. One other thing to note is that these moves imperil the SLOCs to all IJA assets south and west of the Gilberts meaning that in a few months I should be able to take Fiji and most of the Japanese holdings south of Rabaul fairly easily.



Lessons learned:
1. Amphibious landings in non-base hexes are VERY slow to unload and suffer massive disablements. Several of my units are at below 50% readiness because of disablements caused during landing. Overall few units actually lost more than 1% of their force destroyed but the disablements were massive.

2. Flying boats don't seem to fly to 50% of their maximum range with troops anymore. They fly to that range with supplies but not paratroops. This has stymied my plan to drop a parachute Bn onto two islands in the Kuriles on 1st November. I had about 90% of my flying boats committed to this action but couldn't "test" it without giving the game away so this failure was a rather unpleasant surprise to me. These flying boats are now redeploying to the Gilberts via Midway.

3. India has very limited repair capabilities for large surface combatants. If a BB takes damage in India expect it to be out of action for twice as long as if that damage was taken in the Pacific.

4. Ground combat has been MASSIVELY improved with encirclement, manoeuvre and fixing attacks now working as you'd expect. This has been used by me, in Burma, to win the ground war without any significant ground combat actually taking place.

5. The IJN maintains a massive qualitative lead into the beginning of 1942. This requires either the acceptance of significant attritional loss or assymetric counters.

I think that may be a limitation on para-drop missions, but I know that they will fly troop transport between 2 allied bases (even unoccupied bases) up to half their max range. (using recent beta) I've used PBY-4s recently to fly restricted units from Oak Harbor to Cold Bay in Alaska recently (Range 38, so exactly half of their 76 range).

P-39s were totally outclassed and will just be used to CAP my own bases from now on. P-40Es and Ks and P38s will conduct offensive missions.

It might come in handy to note that P-39's are excellent for ground attack and anti-small craft missions -- in the absence of Japanese fighters.
