Nagumo’s carriers have been ordered to perform sweeps of Madras. Recon has report 28 fighters at the base. Only a couple of bombers but still enough to keep the carriers a couple of hexes further than I would like. A delicate act of eating away at the CAP and keeping the carriers safe. We meet the Hurricane for the first time and we come away an exchange rate of just under 2 of theirs for 1 of ours. The game has taken a turn with this turn seeing the first serious aerial counter to the Zero. I think another day at least of sweeps before I consider sending in carrier bombers to start hitting the AF.

I send Hiryu’s fighters in for a sweep. I figure that (much as I do not want too) I need to keep up the sweep pressure until I have land based Zeros to do the job. After the last sweep I was looking to see what the CAP band level response would be. From the combat report it seems that the Hurricanes are flying at max altitude. I shall have to query Todd on this as one of our few HRs is that CAPs and Sweeps are limited to no higher than 2nd best band for plane type. The matchup between the A6M2 and the Hurricane IIa Trop looks fairly even with the Hurri getting the advantage of armour and flying over home base.

Not quite there yet as the defenders gave a good account of themselves today. A couple of trashed independent regiments will haul themselves out of the lines to head rearwards and recuperate. We shall wait a while here to allow supply to come forward and some front line repairs to take place. While that is happening we shall also await the arrival of a couple of divisions waiting in the wings after taking time out for their own stint of recuperation.

Well I knew that there was some movement out of Changsha going on but is seems a complete withdrawal has taken place. We shall attack next turn and it appear that Changsha will be picked up on the cheap. I had no real intention of forcing the issue here for some time. The Chinese units look to be heading to Changteh with the intention of holing up there.

Japanese deliberate attack at Sian.

The hurricanes have departed and there is also movement dots on the troops at Madras. Does this indicate that the Allies have given up on Madras. If true that will change my plans on how strong a force needs to be allocated to this operation.

Changsha
Here is the Changsha area of operations. The line shows where the Allies appear to be making their main line of defence in the forest and along the river... this could take some work to break.

You have triggered a massive response by London. Rather than lose the Jewel of the Empire secret talks with Herr Hitler have begun. It appears that Churchill's hatred for Stalin could be greater than that of Hitler when India is factored in. FDR is not pleased by these events and he has been in contact with the Kiwis and Aussies
It seems that behind the scenes Churchill must be bowing to pressure and uncharacteristically is looking to broker a deal with Hitler. Curses… The Germans are meant to be assisting me not releasing the British hordes to secure their jewel. Given the hard coding of the game it is not going to make too much difference to what is one the board. I do wonder though if Todd is signalling that the Brits have been left to fend for themselves whilst FDR looks to Oz and NZ as springboards to defeating Japan. I’m expecting the USN to start becoming adventurous and this can only be a portent in that direction.

March 1942 in summary
I had thought that March would be something of a lean month in the way of big things happening for Japan. How wrong I was.
Major and important bases captured by Japan:
CHINA
Lanchow, Hengyang, Siangtan, Kanhsien and Changsha.
MALAYA/DEI
Soerabaja, Medan, Bengkalis, Palembang, Kuantan and Djambi.
PHILIPPINES
Manila
Seizing the opportunity of all this good fortune lead to an east coast invasion of India. By the end of the month Cocanda, Vizagapatnam and Bezwada had been secured as preliminary bases to stage further attacks.
The capture of Manila has meant that many units tied to this siege are now free for duties elsewhere – read India for many of them.
Changhsa, as previously noted, was something of a gift in that I am sure that a determined resistance would have held me here for months.
At sea great victories were scored in the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal.
Carrier Div 5 lead by Yamaguchi fell upon a loaded troop convoy and carried out a ruthless destruction of enemy shipping. Not to be outdone was Nagumo in command of a reduced KB (Akagi, Kaga and Hiryu + 2 CVL) which completed the destruction of British shipping making a move out of Calcutta after the famous night actions of Nippa’s cruisers Nachi and Myoko which sank and crippled the escorts. I do hope to manufacture some more results to emulate this but it is going to become harder to do as we move deeper into 1942.
Only in the air was there not much to report. Zeros finally met Hurricanes in the skies above Madras but that lasted a couple of days before the Hurricanes were withdrawn. Other than that lots of uninterrupted bombing in China.

Here we go around the board for a quick take on things as they stand at the end of March 1942.
Not too much changing here with Sian still in Chinese hands. I expect this to change by the end of April.

RE: China Changsha area
The fall of Changsha has re written the boundary lines here. A couple of isolated pockets behind the lines. Kukong I shall continue to bombard by air and I have high hopes that Pakhoi will fall during April.
So far so good in China. Soon begins the hard work of breaking the line into the central plains.

Leading Pilots
Due to the relative lack of aerial action during March nothing much has changed here.
I note that I've managed to rack up 100 operational losses for the month. Clearly not a good sign and most likely due to unrelenting activity no matter what the state of weather conditions.

Kido Butai, although powerful, was a raiding force, and this is exactly how the Japanese understood its usage. 'Shattered Sword'

Production Levles.
Across the board most everything has increased. Total oil available has dropped along with RD Air production which also dropped.

Ships Sunk
The current top rankings of ships sunk by most value.
Portland still heads the list and I still believe this is likely to be HMAS Australia.
HMS Cornwall makes the list but I expect this be wishful thinking.
CL Leander was confirmed as sunk during March.
New ships to make the list as a result of the successful IJN actions are:
AMC Corfu
AS Lucia
AS Holland
CL Dragon
xAP Largos Bay
xAP Moreton Bay

The picture wasn't working last post so I'll try again here.

After a Allied sub entered Truk harbour some turns back I have had ASW on patrol waiting for a return visit. SS Argonaut dutifully turns up and PB Nagata Maru scores 2 penetrating hits. Combat report shows 6 hits and heavy damage. I hear sinking sounds and when the action is over find this in the combat report. I’m certain I can count Argonaut as being off the board for the rest of the game.
