17 Jan report

Post by jdsrae »

Breaking news, Singapore attack gets 1.9895:1! The defenders hold but are worn down again...
I don’t think LGEN Percival is in command any more.
18th Div over achieved and are in hex already, but fatigue is up in the 40-50s for most Divs again so I’ll give them a day to reorganise themselves.
I’m assuming that the urban terrain is the main cause for high disruption and fatigue.
Next attack planned in 2 days should end this.

On Luzon, the whole of 14th Army plus attachments are 2 days from arriving at Bataan.

Fine, from what I understand its costs a lot of PP to replace him. PP lost.

Confirmation from correspondence received by the Foreign Minister:

"Yah, I sacked Percival. He's pretty useless.
You'll regret losing that local minesweeper later on."

18 Jan report

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 18, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Port Moresby at 96,133 – good shooting! I value my AV highly so I like taking out allied auxiliaries like this. The USN don’t get a lot of AVD/AVP and I don’t think they can convert any, so chipping away at their capability to provide forward support for Catalinas is a good thing.

SS I-9 launches 2 torpedoes at DM Tracy – unable to get a clear shot at the TK, but it looks like my subs are making C.S. keep ASW assets in rear areas to protect his TK convoys.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Morning Air attacks on Wenchow , at 89,58 – As BB Div 3 is keeping the port and airfield heavily damaged forts shouldn’t be rebuilding. The bombers are starting to come in lower to try and get more hits on the defenders. As Chinese AA seems non existent in this hex, any aircraft that can convert to Nicks later will start strafing as some live training.

Ground combat at Wenchow (89,58)
Japanese Bombardment attack – another deliberate attack ordered for tomorrow, but the most disabled Division will remain in Reserve and sit it out. I am not expecting to get 1:1 but the aim of this attack is to reduce forts to 0.
Attacking force 12655 troops, 173 guns, 67 vehicles, Assault Value = 1689
Defending force 41665 troops, 241 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1285
Allied ground losses:

Squads: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Changsha (82,52)
Japanese Bombardment attack – I’ll keep this up as long as I have supply until 13th Army arrives to the south. Then I will move about half of this assault value SW one hex to join the assault river crossing. That’s probably a month away.
Attacking force 51521 troops, 601 guns, 136 vehicles, Assault Value = 1761
Defending force 63286 troops, 334 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1862

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
42 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 1 disabled
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kukong (79,57) – I am itching to put a deliberate attack in at Kukong but from past experience in this war the individual Regts and Mixed Bdes don’t do well without combat engineers and armoured vehicles in support. I have RGC garrison troops moving past Wenchow now on their way to garrison roles at a few bases near Amoy that will free up the last few components of the 51st Division. It will probably take 3-4 weeks to get these troops reorganised and 51st Div reformed at Kukong, then I will test the Chinese defenders in this sector.

Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 330 troops, 0 guns, 50 vehicles, Assault Value = 28
Defending force 120 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

CS Convoy TF 77 begins loading Oil at Taihoku for delivery to Kagoshima
CS Convoy TF 86 begins loading Resources at Port Arthur for delivery to Fukuoka
Task Force 192 lays defensive minefield at Puerto Princesa ( 73 , 83) and sets course for Davao – this was my error, they must have been docked… they were meant to move to Davao to create a defensive minefield there. I wasn’t planning on creating a minefield at P.Princesa but I have an ACM there so I will keep it for now.
CS Convoy TF 42 will load Oil at Hakodate for return to Ominato
G3M2 Nell from Genzan Ku K-1 Det attacking an Allied SS at 50,90 an Allied SS is reported HIT
G3M2 Nell from Genzan Ku K-1 Det attacking an Allied CL at 49,89 a Electric Boat S-18 class SS is reported HIT
CS Convoy TF 13 begins loading Oil at Shikuka for delivery to Wakkanai
Chiang Mai expands airfield to size 4 – I am getting more recon eyes into Burma and have lots of Oscars here. I will be moving some bombers up here shortly to try and reduce the AVG on the ground if they keep refusing to fly against the Oscars.
Cochin expands port to size 5 – interesting development. Cochin looks like it will make a pretty good backstop port to support any move I make on Ceylon. I assume that’s what C.S. is up to in this area.
2nd Raiding Sentai at Saigon takes Ki-57-I Topsy replacements – training required so they will stay at Saigon for now, but they are planning for airborne ops into Burma based out of Chiang Mai in the near future.
11th Sentai converting to Ki-43-Ic Oscar – currently in Malaya, but once these Oscars are ready they will move north to join the Burma campaign.

ORIGINAL: jdsrae
I also don't want to leave large pockets of enemy troops unsupervised in rear areas or they will try to break out and cut my supply lines. That's the reason for my current obsession with Wenchow and Tsiaotso as they generate supplies, but I'm massing as much force as I can before attacking them. If it takes me a little while to capture them that's ok, as I still need to capture Singapore and then move to cut the Burma Road to turn that supply tap off.

I understand why you think you need to do this. The entire reason I'm writing these posts is to tell you from experience that this is not something you need to worry about. Be Soviet about it. Exploit forward opportunities to cut into the gut of your opponent and leave the rear areas to the arriving troops, garrisons and mostly, your airforce.

The Chinese cripple themselves with any attempt at an offensive simply from the supply usage involved. They will also get pounded anytime they pick up and move away from fortifications, especially into the clear.

You're hurting yourself in two ways here. One is reducing the number of your IJA units you send forward. The other is beating those IJA units down in a fight that will be much easier in 6-10 months when the Chinese troops have no supply (their bases can't support them, especially if bombed regularly), and making your army use use supply and time to recover, all of which add to the difficulty level in moving farther forward against the Chinese.

As you've correctly observed already (not wanting to destroy units and have them reappear back in Chunking as zombies) you want Chinese units forward, out of good rear defensive terrain and away from the ultimate goal of your troops capturing Chunking/Chengtu.

19 Jan report

Post by jdsrae »

Breaking news. Singapore is captured, but not before LCDR Sagara gets his PB Div sunk on its mines and CD guns, himself killed and the 5th JAAF Coy destroyed due to a destination error... That frees up 6 Infantry Divisions for their next task. 2 to Burma, 2 to Sumatra, 1 plan for Java and 1 to theatre reserve.

The next deliberate attack at Wenchow fails to reduce forts. GEN Hata is prepared to reconsider his approach in China and will return to Tokyo to brief the war council on a revised plan. He will get 6 reinforcement Bdes in about 12 days and he’s been instructed not to waste them doing more of the same. I think most of them form C grade garrison divisions so I will probably allocate them as guards of the Chinese stacks in rear areas and move the A and B grade divs forward.

GEN Hata has voiced an opinion that the lack of tanks at Wenchow means the infantry are getting bogged down. The impact of massed tanks supporting 4-5 Infantry divisions will be tested in about one week at Sinyang. Another factor in that upcoming battle is that I own the city and the Chinese should be low on supply, but they are still in decent defensive terrain.

19 Jan report

Post by jdsrae »

I’m travelling for work this week so can’t run the next game turn until my Friday evening.
We did get 4 more turns in over the past weekend with the results below.
I also used the time in between turns to revise plans for China and prepare for the Burma and Java offensives.
The summary is that I need more aircraft carriers and tanks!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Muntok at 49,89

Japanese Ships – destination orders stuff up results in this massacre… Those PB are Ansyus at 10 points a pop so this mistake costs 60+ points. I keep a separate pre-save turn to review while C.S. is giving his orders so checked it for what the error was. I had ordered this Fast Transport convoy to go direct to Johore Bahru. I can’t remember the plan for them, but it was probably to take a small dot hex south of Singapore, not get themselves sunk for no gain. Singapore Fortress has a turkey shoot…
PB Toyotu Maru, Shell hits 5, Mine hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage

Japanese forces CAPTURE Singapore !!!
Pisanuloke expands fortifications to size 1
Ledo expands airfield to size 4 – Interesting. My previous recon about a week ago showed a single allied unit at Ledo, likely a small RAF Base Force. I have moved two more Recon airgroups to Chiang Mai and split them into thirds. That gets me eyes on 6 more allied bases in Burma and I plan to maintain constant recon over the allied airfields on the Burma Road. The allies don’t have the troops to be able to defend all bases in Burma and they seem to have 3 x Divs concentrated in the south. The 1st and 2nd Raiding Regts are moving to staging areas at Bangkok ready to move forward to Chiang Mai. IJAAF Transport Groups are also moving to staging bases like Saigon, Phnom Penh and Bangkok. I need to get some engineers to Hanoi so I can use that airfield to recon the Chinese bases from Kunming west towards Burma as one of them may be vacant and ripe for an airborne operation.
Vladivostok expands port to size 7
Abadan expands port to size 5

RE: 22 Jan report

Post by jdsrae »

This is the revised plan in NCAA. Not radically different in this area.

NCAA Reserves will clear Sinyang and Nanyang then move into defensive posture, but be ready to move forward if the Chinese withdraw anywhere.
27 Div: NCAA, in support of 12th Army. It will help clear Sinyang-Nanyang and then push one hex N of Nanyang to maintain contact with the Chinese on the main road to Sian.
35 Div: NCAA, in support of 1st Army. It will remain at Tsiaotso to help watch the large Chinese stack there
63 Div: NCAA, Peiping garrison C grade Div, currently oversized but it has zero combat engineers so will remain as the Peiping garrison for the duration of the war. Reflecting their status, the C grade Divs will be commanded by reasonable MGEN to free up more of the best LGEN to command A and B grade Divs.
110 Div: NCAA, Tientsin garrison. As a B grade Div I will replace it with the soon to arrive C grade 69 Div. It will then move to relieve 10 Div at Loyang, and defend against the Chinese stack which would probably try to move SW out of Tsiaotso if Loyang was left vacant.

Mongol Garrison Army will conduct a limited offensive into NW China.
26 Div: MGA, will move into NW China from its current position

1st Army will remain in defensive posture vic Tsiaotso and be ready to move forward if the Chinese withdraw towards Sian. Independent Bdes will block the secondary roads.
36 Div: 1st Army, will move to Tsiaotso to help watch the Chinese stack there
37 Div: 1st Army, will move to Tsiaotso to help watch the large Chinese stack there
41 Div: 1st Army, will remain on the high road to Sian
69 Div: 16 IMB will become the 69th Div in 13 days. As a C grade Div it will move to replace 110th Division as the Tientsin garrison.

12th Army will push the front line forward beyond Nanyang then move into a defensive posture. It will then watch and be ready to move forward if the Chinese withdraw along any of the roads in this area. 5th IMB (12th Army) is currently the garrison force at Tsingtao but will be replaced by 1st IMB (NCAA) after the Chinese are cleared from Sinyang and 1st IMB can move by rail from Sinyang.
32 Div: 12th Army, will help clear Sinyang-Nanyang then advance to contact on the main road to Sian
59 Div: 10th IMB will become the 59th Div in 13 days. As a C grade Div it will move to replace the 34th Div and push SW of Ichang to watch over the Chinese stack at Changteh.

11th Army Divs will be relieved and move to join the main effort SW of Changsha.
13 Div: 11th Army, it will help clear the Chinese from Sinyang and Nanyang then move SW to vic Changsha.
34 Div: 11th Army, will move to vic Changsha after it is relieved by 59 Div (12th Army).

Reserves from Manchukuo (in grey)
1, 8, 9, 10, 11 Divs: Now that the NCAA front is stable, these Divs will all move to help clear Sinyang and Nanyang. This should help to convince C.S. that I am making a serious attempt at Sian so I hope it draws more Chinese units forward into the rough country SE of Sian. After Nanyang is captured these Divs will all move to join the main effort vic Changsha.
12 Div: Manchukuo garrison force assault value has risen high enough to allow 12 Div to move into China. It is moving by rail directly to Sinyang.
14 Div: Remains at Jehol in strategic move mode, ready to move by rail once another 500 AV of garrison force is available in Manchukuo. Many garrison units are still recovering their starting disablements so it might be another month before 14 Div can move.

Night Naval bombardment of Wenchow at 89,58
Allied ground losses:
130 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 12 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Is this the same 2x BB tf that has bombarded Wenchow earlier? If it is not too much of a trouble, can you list the air squadrons you have that is also detailed to suppress wenchow? I am doing some “budgeting” and will appreciate comparing to similar operations by other players. Thanks

Is this the same 2x BB tf that has bombarded Wenchow earlier? If it is not too much of a trouble, can you list the air squadrons you have that is also detailed to suppress wenchow? I am doing some “budgeting” and will appreciate comparing to similar operations by other players. Thanks

Yes, the same 2xBB TF conducting almost daily bombardment runs from Shanghai. Some days they miss making it back to Shanghai for happy hour by one hex.
I also have 3x AMc patrolling in the Wenchow hex to defend against allied sub laid mines, plus a SC Div sitting offshore in case allied subs want to have a go at my BBs.

OK here is the Wenchow Air task force:
Shanghai based: 44th and 45th Sentai, 66th IF Chutai, 8CSU all from CEA. The Myoko-1 FP group is training because CA Myoko is in the Shanghai repair yard.
Taihoku based: 3rd and 4th Sentai from 1st air Div; 71st and 73rd IF Chutai from Southern Army reserves.
I will eventually spend PP for all LB groups that can to become FB groups when the Nicks arrive.
These groups are already conducting on the job strafe training at Wenchow.

Revised South China Ops Plan

12th Army will first relieve 11th Army’s 13th and 34th Divs at Ichang and Sinyang.

11th Army will remain at Changsha until 13th and 34th Divs arrive plus the partcipating 13th and 20th Army Divs get into position.
Half will remain at Changsha to attack if the Chinese withdraw, while the HQ and the other half will move to the assault river crossing point (clear hex 81,53).

13th Army will leave some garrison Divs in the rear and move the others forward to the crossing point.
60th and 70th Divs are about to be formed from reinforcement Bdes. 70th Div will free up 116th Div from Shanghai garrison duty.
116th Div will move to Wenchow to cover the Chinese there.
17th Div will cover the Chinese at Chuhsien.
15th and 22nd Divs will move forward to an assembly area at Pingsiang, which I hope is out of view of allied recon being one hex back from the crossing point.

CEA reserves will be committed to the crossing. 19th and 20th Divs will also move forward to the Pingsiang assembly area.

20th Army will test out a tank/infantry combined arms attack at Sinyang shortly. I want to clear Sinyang and Nanyang before moving 20th Army to the Pingsiang assembly area.
The massed Tank Regts, 1st, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Divs will cross the river and push forward along the Chihkiang-Kweiyang axis.
13th and 11th Army Divs will provide flank protection for 20th Army to keep the supply line open.
14th Div will join 20th Army as soon as it can move out of the Manchukuo garrison without risking the Soviet activation.

23rd Army will maintain contact in the SW sector. Once reformed, 51st Div with 19 IMB in support will have a go at attacking Kukong.
Recent recon of Liuchow, the clear hex between Kweilin and Nanning, suggests that it is vacant so it is a potential para drop target, but the few para units have higher priority targets in the upcoming Burma and Java operations.
