RE: Struggle for Mandalay

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

ORIGINAL: String

With night bombing you might as well have hit some jungle several miles from the airfield. Getting to the target during a night with no moon means basically flying with a map and a stopper and then guessing when you are over the airfield. Provided that the AA guns and such don't open up from the base. Even then one can only guess the location of the airfield. Frankly i'm amazed that the early ww2 bombers could hit anything smaller than a large city ..

I totally agree mate! but try and take a look at the results my opponent is having hitting Rangoon's airfields and you'll understand why i get so pissed.
In less than a month i've lost , for night bombing , something like 100 planes at Rangoon, with 10 losses for him ( comprehending op. losses, AA losses and A2A losses). That's why i feel there's still something wrong with this game feature

another Japanese mistake

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

Well, while my AFs, from Burma to the solomons got smashed by allied night bombers, i suffer another big loss. I forgot to change the range of betties and nells based at Rangoon and they decide to attack the 20 hex far away Colombo harbour, where a AP convoy was loading something. I got slaughtered by his CAP and these losses are so serious that i'm considering to abbandon the Rangoon zone with my LRbombers.
South of Gili gili my mavis spotted a 4 ship convoy moving north east. An AP and 3 CAs are reported spotted. I do not trust these report,'cause he must be crazy to send an unescorted convoy so far...so probably his CVs are around. My 2 KBs moved together southwards and will cover the Buna waters, while another daitai of betties has been moved at Rabaul....we'll see what's going to happen...

This is why i try to have a house rule in every PBEM that i play that the night attacks are restricted to city and naval attacks only, unless the unit is night capable (night fighter)

RE: the Nightmare goes on

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

We agreed again that things must be left like they are right now. So let's go on with night bombings ( crossing my fingers)
Have to move some Nells back to Singapore due to their hige losses ( 16 planes destroyed today at Rangoon[:@])
At MAndalay it seems that i cannot hope to take those walls down without the help of the aviation...so i'll go on bombing as long as the sallies do not come back from thei refitting base at Tavoy.
He started to doing recon missions over Gili Gili. Along with the night mass bombings, this means that he wants to try something here....well: i'm ready! A CD regiment is moving towards Gili gili, and my KBs are ready to fight!
Nothing more to report...

An fair agreement?

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

After long discussions we found a compromise which should satisfy both of us. The 4E bombers will be allowed only to night bomb cities, not AFs or Ports, while the 2E bombers of both sides will be free to night bomb whatever they want. Hope this will change a bit the situation.
Not much to note about this turn

RE: An fair agreement?

Post by pauk »

greetings...

1. as for resource bombing: you are doing quite a well, but please keep in mind that some chinese cities have additional supply source (it shows on the base sceren: example...
Supply 3000/2000

3000 coming from resource and when you destroy it these supply will not be active, but 2000 will always. When you destroy resource, use AF bombing for reducing supply (supply hits+supply needed for repairing AF)

2. invasion of PM can be tricky - it seems that just one division will not be enough. Those troops are Aussies. I would suggest to you a detailed "recon" + classic recon... "detailed recon" means ground attack (air bombing), so you can find out which units defending PM:)

just my liras

Hi pauk,

you're probably right about PM. My recon shows 33,000 men at PM. Probably the strenght of an Australian Division. In fact i'm already considering sending there 3 divisions ( one taken from China and 2 from Java when that campaign will be over ). My carriers are already at Truk, waiting for this epic battle and my BBs are refitting at Hong Kong, Singapore and Osaka. What is good is that he's unsable to reinforce PM, due to my air superiority in that Area. If he brings in bombers and fighters i'm quite confindent i can close his AFs at PM in one week of fighting.
I'm pretty sure his carriers will join in as soon as he'll notice my movements...it's gonna be a decisive battle!

In my first PBEM i get my ... kicked, so i have new motto:

"if you need one division - send 3, if you think that you will need 3 division than send 6" [:D]

Yes i do agree. In this match i've always tried to manage "safe invasions". The key will be the use of BBs in reducing the initial oppositions during landings. If i will keep my BBs safe and if mines won't hurt too much i will probably bomb the heck out of PM before the first japanese private will be on the beaches.
He's using dakotas to keep PM supplied. I'll probably use some LRcap from Lae in the next days

Sounds like a pretty sensible compromise on night bombing. I still think its overpowered, but as a Allied Fanboy, I'm fine with it (afterall, it's about all they have at the beginning) [;)] . BTW, I know this has been asked before but is there still a penalty for 2-4 engine bombers attacking below 6k feet?

Do not think so. If you look at the statistics of this match it seems that at 5,000 they do not suffer any penalties (morale,fatigue/op losses or AA fire)
It's a good compromise, but not perfect. As you can see the allies can easily put togheder 250 2E bombers and destroy my air fleet on the ground without risking any single aircraft by night CAP or AA. I'll live with that, but i'm not happy about the idea of having all the burma oilfields reduced at 0 production because of strategic night bombing

Situation

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

March is almost gone. April is comming. The last month of Zero bonus. Time for som considerations about the overall situation.
Altough the combo Bad weather/Night bombing has prevented me from reducing Mandalay with my bombers at Rangoon in the last month, i'm still quite confident that Mandalay will fall within 2 weeks. If i manage to clear the Burma zone by the end of April the offensive operations in this area will be stopped and a general redeployment of my troops will be made.
In China when ChungKing will fall.,..probably by the end of April , i will stop my operations and save some supplies. With ChungKing and Kweyang in my hands China will be cut in two and he's not going to have any forward base from where to launch any bombers towards my homelans. More: with the 2500 VP of Chungking i'll be surely in a 4-1 VP situation!
Java will capitualte withing 2 weeks. No surprises here.
The only theatres where i'm planning any further advances are PM and Timor.
PM is a must, because i do not want him to ruin my days in South pacific with his heavy bombers. I'll probably need 1 month to set up the operation for PM. I've decided to use 4 divisions + 2 eng regiments + 5 arty units and 3 tank regiments. Hope this will be enough. The transports are waiting at Singapore to load all those guys after sosarbja has fallen.
Timor...well timor is a damned problem. Cannot handle two big invasion at the same time, due to his ability to smash my ships with his LBbombers at Cooktown and Darwin. At the same time i cannot wait too long for timor 'cause every day i give him he has time to fortify and resupply Timor bases. I've been an idiot not to have taken Timor in Jan when it was an easy hunt.
Starting from April i'll have my first A6M3s. Let's see if some better planes will be usefull.
I'm also considering a bombing raid against nanomea Atoll. This base is already at Size 2 AF and i know he wants to get level 4 to start bombing to stone age Tarawa...cannot let him do this!
In the end, if i manage to take PM without too many losses by the end of summer he'll be forced to speed up things if he wants to stop me from winning by the end of 42.

April springs out

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

I had some problems related with a food intoxication that prevented me from posting.
Now more than 5 days of war have been accumulated and it's time to summerize them up.

I do not have the combat reports, so i'll try to simplify the results.

On the 1st of April my brave divisions took Mandalay, pushing back towards Lashio what remains of the English Burma Army. Now my men are advancing towards Mykitina(sp?) and Lashio, to close the exit door to those damned british. All my Burma bases are strafed every night by hordes of british bombers and fighters. I had to move back to Saigon the bulk of my air forces ....now i'll wait untill Mandalay gets level 4 AF and then i'll bomb the hell out of those nasty british bases!!

Sosarbja and Java were liberated on the 1st of Aprill too. Now 3 divisions at Sosarjbya are waiting for the transports comming from Singapore to be moved towards Truk, and from there to PM!

In NG and Solomons nothing special happened. He managed to pass trough my air recon 2 big fast trasport convoys and bring supplies and men to Port Moresby. Now my recon says there are 50,000 men down there....[:(] It's gonna be damned hard! Unlucly it was storming over Rabaul for 5 days and my betties could not take off and smash those cowards!....
In China Kweilling( sp?!?!?)( south of Chungking) fell and now my men are already marching towards the Burma Road, while Chungking has being sieged ....got so many supply problems in China, but i won't give up the fight here...Want to connect China with Burma!!!

My Cvs are still waiting at Truk.....no signs of his

Ok, the first units have been loaded at Sosarbja. the 48th and the 38th Divisions plus the 35th Brigade are already moving towards Truk. 3 Eng regiments , 5 arty units and 4 tank rgts will follow.
The operation for Port Moresby will be called "MOUSE TRAP".
One brand new CV has arrived at Tokyo and is already moving towards Truk.
55,000 men are reported at PM, so i must commit whatever i have for this gamble.
The south sea det, 3 divisions ( probably the 5th will be the other one) and some small SNLF units.
My whole fleet will join the operations here.
250 land based bombers and 200 land based zeros will give air support from Rabaul, Lunga, Lae Lae, Buna and Gili Gili.
He knows i'm comming and he's fortifying his positions like a little bee.
It's gonna be the decisive battle for this year. Quite sure about that. If i lose i can easily say that the war will be at a turning point.
If i win i will concentrate myself in defending the perimeter.

Mouse Tra?

Post by Gen.Hoepner »

I'm thinking about the Mouse Trap operation. He's clearly reinforcing PM . More that 55,000 allied troops are courrently there. No planes at the moment execpt for 8 catalinas. How many divisions will i need to a successfull invasion of PM? 3, 4 or more? I'll deploy my whole naval assets, but i still fear his land based bombers from Oz...more tha 60 B-17 are ready there and i'm quite sure his 5 CVs will spring up right in the moment i put my nose beyond Gili gili....Is it worth?....dunno...but at the same time if i let Pm stands and fortify i'll soon have to face the threat of his bombers attacking Rabaul, Lae and my bases in the Bismark....
What do you think?

Hmmmm... it is really hard to say... first of all, you should use "force recon" (ground attack on PM with bombers - you dont need send then in great numbers, only to see how many LCU units are in PM - maybe he has a lots of second line troops in PM (eng, base force...), but i doubt...

although he hasn't got air power in PM he can easily transfer them in one turn, so beware of beauforts (they are really nasty b-stads).

But, if you well organise your invasion (BB bombardments -closing PM airport- providing aircover (from Lae, CV tf) to your BB - disabling enemy lcu units)...it could work. Dont forget bring supply...

It's all depend what you want from the game. If you are looking for auto-victory, you need to strike somewhere and force your opponent for "decisive CV battle"[:D], but if you looking for fighting the war you should consider other solutions...

i'm not expert for invasions, so i would also like to hear from other players what they suggest. Has enyone invaded fortified PM yet?
