The lull of early October, when the only excitement came from three repeated hits, one a day, on USN SS S-2 by Fuchida's Buccaneers was sharply interrupted on the morning of the 7th: USN came to Marshalls. 1st Cavalry division started to unload at Mili, taking it with no resistance. One IJN sub got damaged trying to stop the invaders.

I'm using the Kwajalein ones to stage a one-time raid on Mili - that's bound to attract USN ones there, and that's what subs are for...

I doubt American invasion is well-planned. Subs have spotted only 3 destroyers - one already damaged by a mine - and a cargo ship... perhaps your submarines had hurt him much more than I thought.

I don't know where his battleships are, and that worries me a bit.

October 8-11, 1922

USN continues to unload at Mili, with another transport TF on the way. IJN subs are earning their pay; 2 AKs and 1 MSW shall not sail again. ASW forces on the other hand have let us down; no strikes for 2 days from 28 aircraft and 18 destroyers. On the brighter side, USN SS S-2, damaged last week, sank.

2 assault BB/BC/CL TFs continue to blockade Mili hoping to intercept stray USN ships, but in 4 days they haven't achieved any success.

October 14, 1922

It is Eniwetok or bust. USN keeps throwing all it's got here - I am seeing elements of both 2nd and 3rd divisions. Most of my destroyers are already there. Half of dreadnoughts should hit this turn, another half and a cruiser TF from Truk the next. Older BBs are on the way from Saipan. I am not about to loose 30,000 fuel and a nice level 3 port with 4000 mines and 12 hulks under repair. Not when it appears that US Army will need about a week to unload enough troops to take it.

If only my DDs would get to USN MSWs or cargo ships. So far it's escorts vs escorts...

None of IJN ships are in danger of sinking (provided Eniwetok holds) whereas USN lost about 7 destroyers today.

I wouldn't count of Eni holding against multiple Marine divisions ...

I think I had a Ind Inf Bde aboard some transports running around down there somewhere ... maybe you could emergency transport him in there .. but against multiple marine divisions, you'll have to sink most of the troops and supply to hold. Remember it wasn't really our strategy to hold in the Marshalls ... figuring any troops out there are lost for sure .. and it would thus make it that much easier to take the PI. But that being said, some delay is good. DOn't want the Amis just sliding across the Pacific without detecting any opposition ... the IIB was considered expendable ...

He might have expected me to meet him in full force: I had 14BB/BC/CL stake out Mili for a week, hoping to intercept his AKs on the way back... no dice. Yet no doubt that he saw them and might have expected to have the same kind of entourage near Eniwetok.

Why not? 2 days and all they got is 6,000 to my 7,000? No engineers --> he needs 35,000 men to do some damage. And quite a few of his APs are already burning heavily.

Too late, stuck at Ponape. His submarine activity was very high earlier, and I didn't dare sending anything anywhere really.

Now, what really, truly is hurting me is not having an AS at Eniwetok - or at least Kwajalein... one is on the way, but...

It wasn't - until I started seeing 7-8 mine hits a day =) Most of my forces were in the south.

Invasion of Eniwetok was ingenious - but he should have spammed MSWs first. There are 22 there already and they are doing a sweet job of clearing the field...

Every day means another AP eating a mine. And those are very, very rare until 1/15/1923, courtesy of you sinking 20 of them early in the game.

It appears that it's more of a bust than Eniwetok for USN.

Of 7 APs in the hex this morning only 3 are still afloat, all damaged.
Of 19 DDs, 5.
Of 27 MSW, only 11 still work, 4 of them barely.
All three BBs are still alive.

Hosogaya's TF of Nagato, 4BC 2CL has chewed through THIRTY-ONE USN ship (20DD AD AP 9MSW) in 72 hours, having used SIXTY-THREE PERCENT of its ammo. All ships show 0 to 6 system damage.

The second assault TF (6BB 2CL) will not be able to arrive until 17th, and with DDs scattered all over (including bottom of the sea), Hosogaya is all that stands between USN and Eniwetok.

The question is, will USN risk its battleships in a minefield still 3100 strong?

I wonder why he went after Eniwetok at all ... he knew it was the most heavily defended, especially from a minefield perspective. He had been probing it for weeks. And it is not really any more useful than the other level 3 ports in the Marshalls. Bypass Eniwetok and it dies on the vine, just like WWII island hoping campaigns.

There was an AS at Kwaj, when I turned it over - not sure where it went subsequently. Kwaj was main sub base.

Minefield at Eni was 5100+ I think when I turned it over .. so he has reduced it dramatically if it is at 3100 now ...

We see the BC force driving all around the Marshalls doing what it can do .. but hopefully we will see the BBs show up at some point ... [:)]

The Marshalls are not worth a dreadnought ( to you ) and not worth a division ( to you ) .. so hit them where they are weak and otherwise avoid combat ... your mission is to defend the P.I. and within that Manilla ( and Bataan ).

But you have proven to be a worthy replacement. I'll bet CAPT is grinding his teeth ( I would be if I was him ) ... the US have a tough road if the Japanese play methodically.

Well, first he went with everything he had after it - I'm seeing at least 9BB and at least 40-50DD. There are 9 different multi-ship TF all around the hex... waiting for MSWs to finish their work.

Hm, I'll check it out. But empty subs keep defaulting for Saipan to reload.

It went from 4100 to 3100 in a single day.

I disagree. If I can get USN stuck - really, royally stuck - at Marshalls, then by the time they come to Truk they're going to face an armada of Commerce Raiders and Q-ships.

Eniwetok/Kwajalein - Johnston is the game's longest level 3 port to level 3 port distance - lots of things can happen to damaged ships en route. 3-wide 4-long submarine plantations, for example ^_^

If one does not develop Marshalls past level 3 yet stuffs it with divisions it becomes a killing spree as US army has to (very, very slowly) unload under fire (if I only got a chance to move a few CDs over there) only to run into well-built forts.

We'll see. There's a TF of 9APs sneaking west from Eniwetok, which is puzzling me. 4CL 4DD from Palau should connect with it in 24 hours.

I disagree. If I can get USN stuck - really, royally stuck - at Marshalls, then by the time they come to Truk they're going to face an armada of Commerce Raiders and Q-ships.

But only possible if USN helps IMHO ... though current opponent seems to be doing such.

In you game where you are USN .. you have sufficient presence in Marshalls to be preparing for next jump to the West. Don't get bogged down !!!
