You could easily take those TFs from sea, but probably your ships would not live long after dawn [:)]

Let's agree to disagree here [:D]. I fear you put way too much faith in Japanese LBA alone and Japan's ability to provide adequate air support to keep those planes operational once the Allied heavies start pounding.

Well, there are 4Es, and there are 4Es. Most of B17s are already shot down, and B29s are still 6 months away. B24/25 are not that tough, and every lost will lower unit morale, so after a while whole unit will be ineffective, until recovery.
And how many large airfields are there in Northern Australia for now? Probably only Darwin. In 2-3 weeks there will be more, but in that time there could be no more Allied troops around Timor.

It is a truism though that the better your planning the more "lucky" you tend to be.

In reality he could have avoided this problem by having a low-numbered SC TF accompanying this amphibious TF. That's a simple, elementary precaution everyone should do.

This was another exciting turn...let's see were to start.

A few turns ago I spotted a convoy moving past the Marquesas.
A light cruiser was dispatched to intercept and by plotting the last observed course of the convoy we made contact.
- Man, that's a huge convoy and only 3 AMs as escorts. Unfortunately our CL spent all its ammo on shooting up a few ships.
Ships were not loaded but a few nice tankers there.

Near Timor I sent of another light surface combat TF for another attempt at tagging the enemy fleets.
The fleets changed course due east and no contact was made; the Bushido captain decided to remain on station (had retire order)
....and what follows? Hundreds of enemy carrier ac launch - enough to sink the Yamato and Musashi on a good day.

But the gods are on our side! The initia attack by 80 dive bombers damage a destroyer and hurt the CL Yubari (several bombs bounced).
In the PM turn another 140 ac attack in t-storms and fail to score a single hit [&o]
Another strike on 2 destroyers also fail to score.

We thus get away from being attacked by 3-400 carrier bombers without any fatalities.
Here you see the extreme effect of attacking small agile ships in poor weather.

The enemy fleets have now moved east to a position 5 hexes south of Roti.
Large numbers of enemy bombers hit Koepang this turn. Not sure if this is to close the base or to soften it up.
- Perhaps Andy wants to go for both Koepand and Roti?

not when he has set the amphib TF to lead the whole armada. AE isn´t WITP anymore. The lead TF seems to enter the hex first while in WITP all seem to have moved into the same hex at the same time and the lowest TF number was picked for combat. While still being simple and elementary precaution, you would have to do it different now.

not disagreeing, I just wanted to point out for other ppl that might not know it either that it´s done differently now.

It is tricky though since I had a **** up when I invaded Port Hedland in my game with Faber in the past. In that instance I had all TF's following my SC TF and the SC TF fled whilst the invasion forces stayed on scene and got mauled. As such you have to have the Amphib TF in the lead with the others following it which seems crazy to me.....but there we go [;)]

Lots of WILDCATs this time. Some units were downgraded?
Why do you not challenge those Koepang bombers? There is enough bases 2-3 hexes north, to put 250 fighters, and end the whole adventure in one day.

Andy did some changes this turn so we only intercepted one of his carrier TFs [:D]
No hits but a good scare and we may have caused some disruption among enemy fleets.

I'm not to worried about Koepang Inq; need to use the air assets wisely in order to fulfill a handfull of tasks.

This turn the enemy fleets moved closer to Timor and dropped paras on a dot base.
Heavy enemy air strikes attacked our shipping and caused damage to various cargo ships and escorts but nothing really worth
CAG attention and the price paid.

Looked like Andy moved 150 new fighters to Waingapoe; they showed up but didn't really engage in the fighting.
Our bombers came in again and despite some losses hit the airfields again.
- In the PM phase no further Allied CAP over Waingapoe was spotted and field damage is reported at 100% with 160 enemy fighters present.

In total more than 100 enemy ac were shot down for the loss of ca 75 Japanese. Our pilot losses were moderate fighting over friendly territory.
Andy tried to move a destroyer into Waingapoe to attract our bombers in order to shoot them down; we didn't take the bait and the DD was sunk.

A raider also intercepted a cargo ship in the Central Pacific.
Sending AMCs, subs and CLs into the void with all Allied attention on the "other side".

Very possible that enemy landings at the dot base and Roti will take place next turn.
Will Andy dare to challenge our strong defenses?

Have to ask Andy about that...but it's possible that he's now returning to Waingapo with a set [;)]

This was a giga turn so I've divided it in 2 parts:
1. Sea and ground battles
2. Air battles (will place separate post)

Here is what happened:

The Koepang / Roti attention was a diversion for now; enemy TFs steamed straight towards Waingapo again!
This had several effects:

Sea: Our surface combat TFs were ordered to speed through Roti and back to Makassar via Waingapo.
This caused several surface battles that weighed heavily in our favor.

Air: I had set our air assets to naval attack in range of Roti and Koepang; I wasn't interested in Waingapoe
but when the enemy moved here our full LBA committed. The 100% AF damage is just bull; Waingapo was open and there were
150 ac there including 50 T-bolts, 30 Corsairs as well as the numerous Hellcats. All our fighters escorted and met the enemy CAP.

- Subs claimed an LST and a cargo ship. Our raider near Nuku Hiva managed to claim another transport.

- A small 2 DD TF managed to torpedo the BB New Mexico

- A powerful cruiser TF with an ultra aggressive Admiral connected with an Allied amph TF [:D]
What a glorious one sided carnage! Numerous transports and LSTs were shot to pieces; if not this was enough the convoy escort
was given a class 1 pounding! The BB Valiant was left a burning hulk and 4 destroyers were moderately to heavily damaged.
Our own ships only received light damage.

I'm not sure I'd be overly confident about what 8" shells do to a BB. How many actually penetrating hits did you see?

Too bad the Mikuma group was worn out after it's first encounter. It could have devastated that second TF that it evaded.

It was hit by dozens of 8" shells, 5.5 shells and the rest 5" and smaller.
The combined effect was to wreck the superstructure and put the ship ablaze.
- With heavy damage and heavy fires the ship is either doomed to Davy Jones or a repair yard for 15 months.

Ok here is the not so fun part to report [:(]

Let's start with the good parts:
We torpedoed 2 more battleships, the New Mexico took another 3 hits (1 torpedo hit was scored by our destroyers).
This means the New Mexico is also in big trouble. The Resolution is a slow old ship and will most likely go the the Bombay yards.
- We've really put a lot of capital ships out of action without loosing many Combined Fleet ships in this campaign; I like that.

A TF of 6 Shimakaze class destroyers was sent to intercept shipping near Roti.
Despite an 11/11 hex full speed dash they remained at station; 1 ship was hit by bombs but by a miracle the rest escaped damage.
- This lethal TF will be able to hit Waingapo tomorrow.

Not sure what to say about the air losses; they're just ugly!
We loose 464 ac while Allies loose 86 - that's 5-1 [:o]

Attacking with escort into a CAP like this hurts big time: Almost 300 fighters.

Andy is overstacking Waingapo badly and despite heavy field damage most ac are airborne.

If we look at what we lost:
80 Betties (crack ones, can not be replaced)
47 Helen IIs (moderate ground pounders, not critical)
51 Oscars - we'll live
60 Jills and Judys (not crack, can be replaced)
An assorted 200 Tojos, Tonys and Zeros (many good pilots lost and the large loss means it will take a few days to reorganize our LBA).

This serious setback challenged me and I spent hours reorganizing the chaos.
We have plentiful pools of ac and pilots so losses can mostly be made good but it will take some days.

Tomorrow we will send 200 fighters on sweep over Waingapo;
With heavy damage to repair facilities even damaged ac will clutter the field and reduce its ability to operate.

Since the KB was spotted (launched 2 small strikes) I have now moved it to a new location.
The fact that Andy is reinforcing Waingapo is something I don't mind; we have already heavily reinforced the island and in a few
days 4 divisions can march and stall any hope Andy might have for capturing the place.
- PS! Do you think we should march into the enemy hex or simply stay back and let Andy do the marching?

Not sure how many troops Andy will unload tomorrow; hopefully our surface TFs will disrupt them.
