It is a very good book and very detailed, covering not just operations but the logistics as well. Even though written by an ex-RN waffoo he doesn't hesitate to criticise where criticism is due.

Hi all,
ORIGINAL: Terminus

Steel Wolves is to be HIGHLY recommended. It has the same sort of YES!-factor that original stock WitP had when I first played it all those years ago.

If there's one little thing that's speaks against it, it's that there's no mechanics for helping you to remember all the rules. I've forgotten to use a few rules along the way that could have helped me (like disremembering to deploy German search aircraft).

Anyway, I'm glad I spent my money. It was quite a lot, but well worth it.

How hard it would be for them to create purely PC version (i.e. everything happening on PC - no actual table maps and counters)?

Would it be feasible and attractive for possible players?

Leo "Apollo11"

I'd buy it in about four seconds, but remember that this is a solitaire game, so any PC adaptation would be an automatic loss of boardgame customers.

It looks like the Belgrano/Conqueror thread has reached that point.  It's not crossed the line yet, but there's sure to be someone on the forum who's going to give it the nudge across.

Hey Dixie, anything special you want to know about the convoy combat mechanics in the game?

Mainly the setups, I'm interested as to how it lines up against Silent War. It appears to be a more complicated (realistic?) setup compared to what I'm used to, the setup is abstracted a bit in Silent War. The actual combat mechanics are pretty much the same from what I understand.

Well, good thing that U-50 just found this small convoy in the Western Approaches:

Image

The first thing you do is position your U-Boat(s) in the submarine boxes at the bottom. You can always attack from the outer boxes, but obviously the targets are smaller. If you want to get inside the convoy, you take a modified dice roll as you can see in the text below the box. The U-Boat can attack the column corresponding to its box freely, and neighbouring columns with a penalty to its dice rolls.

Also note that there are lots of boxes, for Wolfpack actions, and a "Shadow" box for the boat calling in other boats.

Other than that, once you've determined that you're facing a convoy, the engagement tables tell you how big it is, and how many pieces you must draw from what cups. In the case of this small convoy, it was 10 each from the "inner" and "outer" cups; then you distribute them evenly in the columns.

Large convoys, "special" convoys and navy task forces are largely similar to this, although their combat displays have a few differences (obviously).

Think the "Convoy Course" thing is just there for show. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the game.

The "End Combat" box is a Vassal button that returns all pieces on the display to their cups, and any U-Boats to the "Done" field in their OppArea. VERY handy!

I know it's a bit gushy, but this was a really good investment for me. I just entered May 1940; been playing more or less constantly since last Thursday...[:)]

The minstrel boy to the links has gone
In the ranks of best you will find him
His father's bag he has girded on
And his wild harp slung behind him.

North or South, this young man is doing Ireland proud. If I look hard enough, I can see harps over his shoulder. Very well done, young Mr McIlroy. Fainne oir ort.

When starved of sporting success like the UK is, you have to take it where you can find it. If Rory was born in one of the six counties and he represents GB and NI then that's good enough for me [:)].

Besides, regardless of where he comes from and who he represents, he seems like a thoroughly likeable young man, so good luck to him [:)].

[:D] Well, I'm Scots-Irish, probably descended from those who were installed there during Plantation, but I feel Irish.

If he keeps going like he is then it'll be good being an Irishman tonight!

The knowledgable crowd in MD have really taken to him to - which is nice to see.

Perhars you are right Warspite. He is North. And I know that matters in football and some other things. But this is the Masters and the Open and it's a teensy bit different. He is from the Isles where the Summer Sun smiles. Be he Cat or Prot, North or South, just take one look at him. He's a Celt. I, for one, am proud that he's Irish.

I think it's good that you claim him as one of yours' too, because we can then both rejoice in his unbelievable victories, together.

Ciao. John
