F-5A Lightning sighted over Akyab
Ace pilot Dohibara R. of 11th Sentai is promoted to 2LT
Previous report of sinking of SS Snapper incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service
DD Hayashimo arrives at Kobe – will move south when the Kongos return to the Combined Fleet
SS I-53 arrives at Okayama – will move to SWAF for long range patrols around India
ML G-216 arrives at Sapporo
MTB G-16 arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka
203 Ku S-1 arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – assigned to 28th Air Flotilla, 13th Air Fleet, SWAF. Upgraded to George-2. Pilots with 70Air but <70Strafe skills are assigned. Orders are to train Sweep 100% range 0 to increase Strafe and Def skills. There are no other IJN fighters in the SW Area Fleet yet so they will help to provide some depth and a reaction force just in case the Allies try anything in the coastal areas from Rabaul to Palembang.
203 Ku S-2 arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – same as above, but issued rookie pilots and set to train Escort 100% range 0 to train Air and Def skills.
553 Ku K-1 arrives at Bihoro – assigned to 27th Air Flotilla, 12th Air Fleet, NEAF. Issued D4Y1 Judy to keep a pool of D4Y4 in case the Fleet needs them. 553 Kokutai will fly operational Naval Search missions to spot subs, attack one on occasion, and slowly increase experience. I’ve noticed that flying NavS missions over Allied subs results in bonus ASW skill increasing whenever the pilots attack, so I’m only setting ASW patrol missions where there are large Allied sub swarms and multiple air units overlapping each other. Also, IJA bombers like Sally/Helen train and fly ASW but not NavS, so they leave the NavS to the Navy to let the Army focus on ASW as a way to train up Def skill and fly a useful mission to slowly increase experience levels.
553 Ku K-2 arrives at Oita – same as above but flying Jills.
701 Ku K-1 arrives at Nagoya – moved to INAF Base Tsu with G4M2 Betty and set to NavSearch 50% range 17. There are no pilots available for this unit yet as all the rookies are training NavS and ASW skills in Jake Force. It will fill out with trained strike pilots as they become available from the Jake Jill training pipeline as it is a waste to use Nell/Betty/Frances for training.
23rd I.F.Chutai arrives at Tokyo – IJA basic fighter pilot training, Escort 100% range 0.

Afternoon Air attack on Maloelap , at 136,117 – Maloelap is out of supply and it is too risky to get more in there on the surface. Afternoon Air attack on Wake Island , at 136,98 – the Allies have split their CV force into at least two parts, which is interesting to see. That could create opportunities for KB to strike at part of it if the Allies start to get complacent and keep spreading it out. I need to get KB onto a flank. I might send the Combined Fleet towards Marcus Island and try to intercept the next Allied raid on Wake Island, which is now out of supply anyway, but still hasn’t been invaded.

Their NavS skill is untrained so still average of only 18.

Imperial General HQ is also seriously contemplating a raid of the Bay of Bengal by the Combined Fleet to support 15th Army on the Arakan Coast, as the RN will probably move against them soon.
203 Ku S-1 arrives at Nagasaki/Sasebo

This wasn’t good news for 1st Division as they are the last full Division in this battle.
I didn’t expect the rest to march out of the hex overnight, but 1st Tank Div, 3x Infantry Divisions and some support units look to have escaped to the SE. It was a better result than expected, but 1st Div has been heavily disabled.

Feb/Mar 44 reports

Post by jdsrae »

I’m about 3 weeks behind on the AAR as I’m barely getting time to fit a turn in each day.
The pressure is still building on the India/Burma border and the Allies are also threatening in the Pacific.

After lots of frustration the IJN subs finally landed some blows on the USN today (mid Mar 44).
Firstly 3 of 6 torps hit a BB then the same turn 2 of 4 torps hit Lexington II causing an ammo storage explosion!
Both subs involved were heavily damaged but will try and limp out of the battle area.
Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

27 Feb 44 reports

Post by jdsrae »

I'm nearly a month behind the AAR now so will try to catchup over the next week or so.

Chittagong fell on 27 Feb 44, so IJA 15th Army delayed the Allies for about 2 months longer than expected.
They withdrew in good order and are digging into the jungle terrain one hex to the SE to try and cause further delay.
The Allies have got lots of tanks and their firepower is causing lots of disabled IJA squads...

Introducing E No.2, the first of the swarm of no name Type C and D Kaibokan commissions into the Escort Fleet.

I plan to use them in 3-4 ship Divisions organised by number.
Wikipedia says the Type C and D were the same except different engines. C had diesels and D had turbines.
I just learnt that the Cs had odd numbers and Ds had evens, so the Divs will have a mix of C and D classes in them.
Not the best for the Supply Officers who have to remember which fuel to use to fill up which ship, but they will manage.

1 Mar 44 = 382 new IJN rookie pilots. At the end of the turn there are still 122 left, but more IJN air units will arrive in March that might use them all again.

The large IJAAF fighter corps expansion also just happened, so more Army pilots will move into on-map training units.
In the IJAAF fighter pilot reserve pool 505x pilots have 70 Air and 70 Strafe skill.
The 70/60/50 experience groups are roughly indicated, most of them in their 60s.
Most of these pilots are about to fill out the vacancies just created in the fighter Sentai size increases, mostly to 49 planes each.

176 Frank-R were used to fill out the Sentai, and with all the pilots transferred to active units there are now only 86 reserve Army fighter pilots left with 60s experience.
All fighter groups are 133% full of pilots.
15x Sentai are operational;
6x Sentai are flying CAP 100% range 0 (advanced training);
2x Sentai are flying Training/Sweep100% at 100’ for Strafe training – half the FB Sentai and 6 of 8 FB Chutai are also flying Strafe training
14x Sentai +4x Ind. Chutai are flying Training/Escort100%

--------------
Combat debut of the Nick-D, flying LRCAP NF duty over Akyab.
They do slightly better than the Nick-C as they actually fired at the bombers a few times!
They only hit one bomber causing this damage, with most firing still coming from the bombers to damage lots of Nick-Ds and destroy one.
This is the only Nick-D Sentai in the empire at the moment, so the night bombing war is very one sided.

The Allied ship moving from Calcutta to Chittagong was spotted as a big xAK, so the Allies must need more supply at the front line.
Holding the railway hex just NW of Imphal might be causing some supply concerns, but that won’t last long once the railway opens up…

Night Air attack on Akyab , at 54,45

This little action was very encouraging, with the Nick-D damaging about 5-6 B24s based on the combat replay.
For the first time that I can remember the Nick-D seemed to do more attacking than the B24s did!

Group patrol altitude is 2000 , scrambling fighters to 7000. I’ve taken to setting the NF well below the bombers. I figure they have an UP firing weapon for a reason, so they can climb up to the bombers from a low patrol altitude and shoot up into their bellies.

xAK Kiangsu is reported to have been sunk near Diamond Harbour on Mar 03, 1944
MGB G-222 arrives at Osaka/Kyoto
331 Ku S-1 arrives at Hiroshima/Kure – size 18 so I’ve attached it to 1st Air Fleet and issued it with A6M8s. It has a hard wired upsize to 36 in Oct 44, so before then it will move to the Marianas and train up pilots. In an emergency it will be able to fly forward onto a CV (or 3) to replace losses.
S-306 Hikotai arrives at Chiba – starts assigned to 21st Air Flotilla so it will equip with George-2 and good pilots and move to Rangoon to defend the port from the inevitable 4E bomber raids, and provide a bit of depth behind 3rd Air Army.
46th Ind.Mixed Brigade arrives at Taihoku – can merge into the 66th Division in about 130 days so will stay at Taihoku to fill out and train. It has some artillery and AT guns, so it might become a B grade Division when 249th Infantry Regt arrives to join it.

-------------
5x pilots KIA and 4x WIA today around the Empire.
3x KIA and 1x WIA from the defending 252 Ku S-1 in this battle.
5 pilots qualified for CV duty by reaching 81+ experience.
There are now only 13 operational aircraft with 23 being repaired, so LRCAP is needed to cover the mechanics while they work.

More George and Frank will reinforce via LRCAP from Rabaul tomorrow.
Torokina has 45x George-2 that were on range 0 CAP, so they will change to range 1 to cover both bases tomorrow.

There are only 2x AR in the Marianas, one at Guam and one at Saipan. CV Taiho arrives!
The CVs haven’t been accelerated, apart from some slight acceleration to the last few Unryus to get their arrival dates back into Dec 1944.
The air group will be modified so that there are 18x DB and 18x TB, to allow space for a 36x F unit.
Taiho will move south after the air group resizes, escorted by CL Agano and 9x Yugumo class DDs to join the Combined Fleet CV task force.
CAPT Yamamori will retain command for now despite only having a 50 naval skill.
I should probably replace all CV CAPTs with high naval skill, low aggression COs, but I might do that once Taiho arrives at Saipan and review all CV CAPTs at the same time.
