GW Counterfactual Take 3.

Re: GW Counterfactual Take 3.
Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #7. Eastern (Southern Army Groups) & Middle East.
Ground Strike. Azerbaijan 67,75.
(1) Rommel sees a blitz opportunity the Soviet mech army & div (1-hex east of the Free French & CW HQ stack).
(2) However; he can only muster 2 mech corps and no div (no mot or otherwise).
(3) Raw odds are +5B, which gives a 79% PWIN, 58% no loss & only 28% breakthrough.
(4) However; a successful ground strike against the mot army (+7B) would give 90% PWIN, 69% no loss & 45% breakthrough.
(5) Flipping both (+8B) would give 94% PWIN, 73% no loss & 55% breakthrough.
(6) While taking a loss with only 2 mech attacking, what's significant is the breakthrough which (assuming 80% turn continues) would force the USSR to take a combine to save Baku.
(7) Rommel will order the blitz if the Luftwaffe ground strike manages to flip the Soviet mot army.
(8) And, of course, it failed. The Stuka was shot down!
(9) Blitz NOT ordered.
(10) Also, Rommel considered ordering an assault against the flipped IND Mil on the southwest flank.
(11) However; this would require +10A which had 97% PWIN, but carried with it a 25% chance of losing 1, 17% losing 2 & 3% losing 3 of the 4 high quality attacking units.
(12) Rommel opted not to assault and decided to use maneuver to flank the Western Allies in southern Russia. End of Impulse.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #7. Eastern Front.
Army Groups Center & North. End of Impulse.
(1) The Red Army in Siberia a year ago look to be on the edge of annihilation.
(2) Now they have "regenerated" and are on the initiative pushing west.
(3) Both OKH & OKW are wondering what went wrong?
(4) I'll tell you what went wrong, they got too greedy and pushed to far to the east into Siberia.
(5) They should have been content holding and reinforcing a Yaroslavl to Gorki to Saratov to Stalingrad to Caucuses Mtn line. Finnish Army. End of Impulse.
(6) If the axis get another impulse this turn then the Finnish inf corps (assuming snow) will be able to finish the rail connect from Murmansk into Eastern Europe.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Allied #9 (Impulse #198). Weather & Actions.
(1) Turn continued from previous (axis #7) impulse on D10=6 (2 or less to end).
(2) Weather in the Med and South Monsoon turns to storm.
(3) Weather in the North Temperate goes from storm to snow.
(4) Weather in the arctic remains snow and in the north monsoon & south temperate remain fine.
(5) High priority need for US & CW land moves result in land actions for both.
(6) China & USSR also take land actions.
(7) Free France takes a combine.
(8) 30% turn ends.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Allied #9. PTO & Asian.
Siam & FIC. End of Impulse.
(1) USMC 2nd div headed for the open city of Saigon. China. End of Impulse.
(2) If turn ends before another allied impulse all non-oil consuming IJA units will be reorganized.
(3) CCP needs 1 more impulse to (re) isolated all units near Sian.
(4) Or, USN/RN need to sink the IJN supply CP in the Sea of Japan.
(5) US land units move in force into southern China and plan to move northeast up the coast and eventually liberating Shanghai.
(6) The US also plans to liberate all ports and break once and for all supply to all IJN units in China.

Western Front.
Reorg.
(1) Though the allied blitz in France is considered a victory it's not the one that the allies wanted.
(2) They wanted a breakout (breakthrough) into west central France and (soon) capture of an Atlantic port.
(3) There is an opening but with all (surviving) blitz attackers flipped the allies weren't in position to exploit that gap if this turn continues (21% chance allies get another impulse).
(4) While the odds are against the allies of getting another impulse (21%), these are are odds that Germany would ignore at their own peril IF the allies had organized unit(s) that could exploit this opening.
(5) The US reorgs 4 quality land units at the mouth of the opening. End of Impulse.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Allied #9. Middle East & Southern Eastern Front.
End of Impulse.
(1) Only movement, Free French 1st inf div moves south of Bombay MIL (and flips) to better cover southwest flank of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in the USSR.
(2) Note that the allies used the adjective "better" vs "adequate", which is a big difference.
(3) Note that a mech army from Konev's southern front, which just liberate Stalingrad, moved at flank speed to the foothills of the Caucasian Mts and even liberating an oil field (RP).

(1) Assuming the turn continues (70%), Germany most certainly can't risk not reacting and only rely on the 70% that the turn ends of their impulse (GIVEN that it continues).
(2) Germany's Army Groups North & Center are in danger of being encircled and annihilated if they don't react either with reinforcements and/or retreat.
(3) OKH is asking, "What is happening on the Eastern Front"? "How did the situation become so deteriorate and become so critical so fast?"

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #12. Impulse #199. Weather & Actions.
(1) Turn continues from previous impulse (Allied #9) on D10=4 (3 or less to end).
(2) Germany takes a land, Japan passes.
(3) Donitz, like his RN rival counterparts, is frustrated to no end that he can't have a combine to move all those newly boats in Kiel (3 flotillas & 3 Gp) to join and fight with the flotillas/Gps already at sea.
(4) OKH has bigger concerns; specifically the developing situation on the Eastern Front and stopping a possible breakout of the Western Allies into north/central western France.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #12.
End of Impulse.
Western Front.
(1) Germany and Vichy make the decision to to abandoned Nice and the Coast of the French Alps.
(2) The Wehrmacht also manages to rush in troops and closes the Gap in south central France. Italy. Balkans.
(3) The Wehrmacht makes the decision to retreat from the Italian Alps into France.
(4) No need getting these badly needed troops cut off and destroyed.
(5) In the Balkans, axis forces (try to) shorten their FLOT in order to free up troops for elsewhere (Eastern and Western Fronts).

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #12. The Eastern Front.
Southern Army Groups & Middle East.
Ill-Planned Ground Strike.
(1) [clear, Snow, unopposed] Ju 87B Stuka (5/2=3) vs OOS Soviet 3rd mech army=2 (flipped).
(2) WAIT!!!! OKL in their rush to comply with OKW ground strike request didn't do proper recon of the target, which is in woods and NOT in clear terrain.
(3) Therefore, p0=0.1 (5/4=1) due to woods & snow and NOT 0.3 Even with D10=2, the Luftwaffe ground strike failed to flip the target.
(4) OKL & OKW were so certain they flipped the OOS Soviet mech army that they began land combat operations planning to eliminate this pesky threat.
(5) That was until they got the post strike photos back showing the mech army in the woods & still organized. End of Impulse.
(6) Ever aggressive Rommel pushes his forces forward (i.e., south) and trusts that Army Group Center will cover his northern flank. Army Groups Center & North. End of Impulse.
(7) Army Group Center will giving up some ground does manage to reestablish a continuous FLOT down to (almost) the northern flank of the Southern Army Groups.
(8) Army Group North (re) establishes a credible FLOT running from Army Group Center's northern flank, north almost to lake Onega. Finland. End of Impulse.
(9) Mannerheim finally completes establishing rail from Murmansk to occupied USSR proper.
(10) Just in time to (hopefully) get his badly needed forces railed down to Novgorod and east.
