Are you sure? I've never seen a referee's resume. I've been closely studying this. Baseball has three referees and one umpire. This is because the MLB does not wish to be known as having more referees per player than the other sports. Basketball has gone beyond that standard. It has as it's crew chief a referee. The one or two other guys are called umpires. This means that Basketball has more umpires per player than any other sport. In addition, for extra prestige, Basketball's referee and umpires are equipped with whistles. Well La-Di-Dah.

You know, in Baseball the umpire makes umpirical calls. If the catcher, for instance, disagrees with the call he can stand up and point at one of the referees to get a theoretical call. I've actually seen this happen.

Tennis. Oh, my. Tennis has So-Called Judges and regular Judges. Some of the So-Called Judges are also referred to (yes Tennis has referrers, it's a rich man's sport after all) as Line Judges. I believe Tennis also has Point Judges and various other Judges handling two dimensional duties, such as Rhombus Judges and Triangular Judges. In the case of disputes between the various judges, a special judge applies Circular Logic to resolve the situation. Then of course, there is the umpire. He or She is situated above the plane of the Tennis Court and therefor supersedes all the one and two dimensional judges, and the Point Judge for that matter.

I just received a missive by a certain personage named "John McEnroe". He states that not only are there "So-Called Judges" but "So-Called Umpires" as well. I stand corrected.

This apparently originally came from a technical blog but the source was not named where I saw it. It's a translation of a technical error window into what the average computer user sees in their mind when they read the technical warning. I think we should start incorporating these sorts of warning's in AE, and probably in AAR's as well.

Football, (that is real football!!!!), has a back judge, a side judge, a field judge, a line judge, an umpire, a head linesman, and a referee. They are studying the need for a swimsuit judge.

Did your Mr. McEnroe use the code phrase 'you can't be serious' to authenticate himself? If not you may have been taken in by a so-called John McEnroe.

So they use a real ball and play the game with their feet?

I just don't have one of those foot-fetish things. I have never understood it. Oh, Sophia, you need me to lick the toe jamb from your feet? No sooner said than done.

Is that Yiddish?

I don't know if this link will lead you anywhere, perhaps it will ask for a password. Someone let me know.
