I think you got Palembang. While I would have brought more than 65th Bde, or a better quality formation, the units he has in Palembang are fragments and generally really bad. The Landstrom Bns are useless at this stage, only the Punjabs have any real fight.
A single shock attack should end it.

I am in favor of a Palembang move early for one other reason: It's a good airfield for covering a move on Java

Thanks. I'm wary of shocking as I don't want to trash the oil. He's now moved out all air cover, so I'll bomb the ground troops and then DA. This might take several attacks, but I hope will be more gentle to the infrastructure.

If I'm wrong and extending the siege will be worse, let me know. I've always had luck getting most of Palembang intact, so I'm not really sure the conditions most likely to blow up oil wells.

Looks like you are in good shape at Palembang. I'd be concerned about trashing the facilities with a shock attack, and as witpqs points out, a failed one at this point would be an unnecessary setback. Here's to Palembang intact or slightly damaged upon capture!

I bombarded by sea about a week ago and the damage is still showing on the port. I feel if I went in again I might be pushing my luck as that one took 49 points off of the refineries. I don't want to do the same or worse to the oil.

The forts shouldn't be too high. I think he's got something up his sleeve though. The number of units just went up! I'll report more and look back to figure out how much increase this could have been. I think he expected me to attack immediately and tried to encourage me by evacuating all fighters and by showing movement out of the base while strat moving and/or flying more forces into it. Oosthaven is now down to one unit.

The good thing is that a strong force s here and will remain. Now that something is landed I'm not in as much of a hurry and could even add a few SNLF units easily. After not getting it early, slow and steady might win the race here this time, surprisingly.

DEI: Torsten did go strongly at the Palembang invasion force today. Except that it was unloading some supply at Sinkep Island protected by 4 CA and 4 DD. The mini-KB pulled back as well, just even with Singkawang to get LR CAP support. That was useful today as he threw all kinds of crap bombers its way. There were no hits on any ships.

Kates however did hit the CL Ceres and CL Caledon that had tried to interdict the landing today and were stationed one hex out of Palembang. A stronger force was in the Palembang hex. he's very good at flooding a zone with surface ships, and I'm glad I pulled back today to get a better look at what was coming. Now our 4 CA TF at Sinkep will try to finish off the two CLs and then head back to cover the rest of the fleet.

An SNLF has walked to Sambas and will DA there tomorrow. Another is heading to Pontiniak.

China: In China the air war went our way again also. The AVG got tangled with some zeros defending Nanchang as we bombed the KMT forces there. In the end 3 more went down to no loss of zeros. bombing was fierce, and I'm amazed he's not pulling these back now. The extra division has now moved into the city to solidify defenses there.

interestingly there is a movement flag on a group of three units heading to Kuikiang across the river. This can't be true, as the division there behind level 3 forts in swamp territory would tear them apart. At any rate, I'm not going to bomb or move anything for a while to see if it really happens because I'm all for that engagement.

The division and tanks moving to Sinyang will attack a blocking unit tomorrow. They will then move into the city removing any real danger from this point. The place should hit level 3 in two days and is up to 678 AV right now. It would take 2k AV or more of good Corps to break through that, and with 500 more AV of fresh troops moving in there is no chance it would fall any time soon. His only chance is if he can attack within the next tow days before the tanks arrive.

PI: Bombers in the PI tried for Vigan and the Nates there performed admirably, shooting down two B-10 and one B-17. Amazing.

Then, just after two fast transports unloaded a flood of Allied TFs come in to attack. Good force composition on these. The stronger one acme in second and I thought the two CAs were goners. After the turn though, they are not quite as bad as it looked. Still tenuous, with system damage at 55 and 64, but the other levels are low. Put them on cruise and I'm hoping he's got nothing more to throw at me for now.

Two DDs went down for probably two of his, but that of course is worse for me.

A 3 BB TF will move over tomorrow at flank to cover the retreat and another 3 CA are moving in from the West and will also be in the area to pick up any pieces that are left.

DEI: I'm not sure if he sent them back in or if this is a mistaken meeting, but the CLs from yesterday ended up th esame hex as our AMc crew aiming to sweep Balikpapan and also two of the injured DDs. There was no combat, so I realized these ships must be in an escort TF due to damage.

Sure enough, they were moving slowly, and the sub I'd thrown in the way for just this reason ends up hitting a DD and a CL! Banzai!! Here's to Ro-34 for turning yesterday's battle right around.

Kendari falls today as well. The Air HQ is right behind a day away. Bettys will fly in immediately.

A BB TF is now blocking the Macassar strait as another SCTF moves in to drop in Samarinda, which is also captured.

When will you be able to get some airpower into the area around Palembang? If you can get some Nells and zeroes operating he will have to retreat or suffer losses. What are you sending to Tulagi? Sorry if you posted that before and I missed it!

Actually I've gotten a number of key breaks lately. The big naval battles around Balikpapan could have been terrible, but thanks to RO-34 they turned out slightly better for the IJN. Probably we sank 3 DD and a CL and he sank 3 DD. hurts, but at least the CAs could make it if there are no Dutch subs in the way. I've got them trailing an ASW TF.

Nates are stationed at Sinkep and I'm thinking to replace these with a smaller Oscar group. I've been hitting transport over Palembang every day, but only taking out one or two here and there. The zeros can reach it and I can get bombers to hit the fields as well. The trouble will be laid out more clearly in my next report.

Palembang now has 24 units for at least 450AV!!! He had been playing a little shell game on the rail lines there. Once I arrived he brought in the other units hoping to trash my troops. So actually I feel very good that i didn't attack right away and maybe have the brigade pushed into the swamps by now. Several divisions are now about to enter the area and will aim to land at Palembang.

I'm just sending about 800 supply for the SNLF unit in Tulagi. Just to keep the boys fed and liquored up while they wait.

Ouch, 450 AV is a major obsticle. By your agreement you need to get the forts below level 2?

How are you planning to achieve that against 450 unmodified AV in a swmap hex without suffering terrible losses? I guess bringing loads and loads of combat engineers is a good start!

How many divisions are you bringing?

I think it might take two divisions. These are available, but there are still a lot of forces he can use to thwart their landing.

The quality of the troops in Palembang is fairly low and many are fragments, so I'm not as concerned as I would be were this a full British division. I would like to get the process sorted soon though before some better ones arrive. Yes, the agreement he proposed was getting the forts to drop to level 2. Not below, but to level 2. They can't really be more than 3 now as there was damage for over a week not being fully repaired.

All of this could make Java easier should I get this fairly quickly.

On the ground we learned something new about Palembang. I'll need to bring a lot more there. Not that any of the troops below are any good, but he nearly doubles my AV in that hex now. I'm sure this was a trap set form over a week ago, and even had I landed with a full division he would have moved in all of these troops quickly and trashed the first attack.

Two IJA divisions are between Samah and Cam Ranh Bay. Surface forces are ready, the mini-KB is getting slightly stronger, Singkawang is now functioning, and it looks like I'll have to run the gauntlet again. Map below.

Oosthaven looks tempting according to current recon. I have a para-unit in Kuching, and I'll try a drop tomorrow using the Tinas. Sweeps will hit Batavia and Oosthaven.

China: He tried another DA at Sinyang. The armor had made it into the hex, so even though he got a 1:1 this one also failed to injure our troops extensively and produced heavy Chinese losses. It did drop the forts, but they are at 39% with over 100 engineers in the hex and a division moving in tomorrow.

I'm feeling good about this defense now. He's still bringing more units in, but with the second division here he'd have to have over 3k AV to really challenge, and it would still take few attacks to bring forts down. Plenty of time for me to bring in another brigade plus an HQ and a mortar battalion. All of those are about a week out.

Elsewhere in China two divisions are heading toward Nanchang as I continue to focus on bombing there. About 50 infantry squads disabled today.

PI: The sweeps did not fly again today in the PI. I'm very frustrated with the few days of flying weather here lately.

Pacific: I loaded up for Rabaul and a regiment plus a big base force are heading in. Worried about CVs in the area, but a 2 ship supply TF is hitting Tulagi in two days, and if that gets sighted, (or wiped out), I'll know to back off for a while. I don't want to be completely passive here either.

Other forces are heading for Tabiteuaea ad Makin.

Over here the battles have been fierce and I expect territory will remain contested as I go for Macassar. The two SNLFs at Samarinda will walk to Balikpapan. An Air HQ is on the way. If the air battles over the PI get resolved soon, or if I get tired of waiting on the weather, zeros will move in here to start working on the Dutch.

Bettys are in Kendari. They are torp enabled as of tomorrow. So any battles in the area now that leave damaged stragglers will be more painful for the Allies.

We've reached January 42, and the game is as exciting as when it began. Torsten is certainly a fun opponent. He's throwing everything into the DEI now and every move I make has to be well protected. Netties should begin to be a factor soon, which might limit some of his distant strikes, but I will still have to move through contested waters to reach most second tier objectives in the DEI, and especially to finish off the situation at Palembang.

China: Torsten got some use out of the 4Es from Clark by hitting shipping in port at Hong Kong. Pacific: The Rabaul landing goes in. Interesting that there are no CD guns here. So I guess the xAL with guns on it was taking these out of the base. Port Moresby looks to be a tough take now.

Burma: Another 5 to 3 battle over Chang Mai and the AVG is bleeding slowly. Our Tojos are going down fast, but if I can weaken the AVG enough to get some bombing going on the Rangoon port and ships moving there it'll be worth it.

subs: I-164 fires 4 at Colombo near Pontiniak. This is my first indication that something is up, again.

DEI: Two groups of CLs moved at flank to Singkawang during the night. I'm thinking that they were after divisions on transports, as there is a TF here unloading that got smacked by the first TF in spite of the two SCTFs the IJN had in the same hex and set to react! Oh, well. Maybe it got some of their movement and ammo used up so that they were easier to deal with later.

My CA TF is again fairly disappointing. Those ships should be eating up British CLs, especially at night. They have a good commander, so I'm not sure what is up. The BB TF should also have done much better. At least they still have ammo for tomorrow. Have gun will hunt.

Here are the many battles joined during the night and the day. The IJN loses no combat vessels after the transport TF is hit, and takes out a few CLs. But it's the Netties that save the day in the PM phase. A 15 hex strike from Georgetown! [8D][&o]

It's a good thing as well because the Singkawang Nells were busy hitting the fields at Palembang.

The Kumano is not looking great with 74 float damage. She was in the Pontiniak hex after the turn so I disbanded her and flew 42 Nates ni for CAP. Only 35 is major, so maybe after a while I can move her out when the damage gets below 50. All others are making good pace back to Saigon.

China: Torsten shocked at Sinyang today! That was unexpected. The attack got a 1:2 and he ended up with over 1000 infantry squads disabled. That should solidify things for a while, but I do feel like I am saying this every week, and it's still not comfortable there. Tanks and a brigade are rushing in, and troops are moving to cut off road access to the base, hopefully diminishing easy supply routes.

In China Oscars continue to do well against the AVG. They sweep near Nanchang and take out 4 for losing only 1.

DEI: All forces are North of Borneo near Kuching for the second invasion of Palembang. They will wait while I brig the BBs and another empty amphib TF into the strait to see what they attract. The Mini-KB will hold a few hexes from Singkawang and several extra SCTFs will protect both the CVs and the transports. Another few TFs are heading over, one refueling at Singkawang and the other at Miri.

No surface forces have been sighted by extended searches in the past few days, plying the skies even to the SE of Java and down to the W OZ coast.

China: Nanyang was captured easily and secured by two tank units. This cuts easy supply to the troops at Sinyang. Those were seen to be moving out of the city as well. Our forces are looking to cut off a retreat toward Sian, and see if we can get them into battle in the clear hexes around Nanyang.

PI: Again some good action at Clark. Wearing them down here at last. Soon it's off to Burma for these boys.

The bombers even got some decent work in.

On the ground it's all stalemate until I get the troops working in Mindanao over here. He's sending a few units out to meet our force at Antimonan. This is interesting. I should be able to grind them down well from the air.

B-17s hit Cam Rahn Bay today and drop three on Haruna, none of which do more than add a few more days repair on. Quite a few are hit by flak, one confirmed shot down.

Pacific: Tabiteuea was landed and taken today. This makes me feel some relief for the Central Pacific. I'd love to pick off Canton, but if he's reinforcing Wake he should be doing the same here. It might be a tough nut to crack before I could get there.

The base force is unloading at Rabaul. Fingers crossed.

Burma: Much action at Rangoon. Lots of ships and 37 fighters stationed here. A small group of Blenheims hits Chang Mai each night for about 1 hit on the fields.

Malaya: Singapore port was ht by Sallys again, but it looks like any CLs that were here have moved on. One HDML put down.

China: Nanchang troops continue to be pummeled from the air. The new divisions moving in are nearly in place and it'll only be a few days to see how much effect this bombing will have on combat.

The AVG elements here are moving about continually. a bit of cat and mouse, but they haven't come up much yet to fight.

PI: Not much left at Clark. This will be left to one zero group and the Tainan will be flown to Burma. I need some new zeros in it, but that will be 5 days from now due to the delay.

Pacific: Nauru falls. Troops are moving in fast transports toOcean Is, Buna, Milne Bay and Rossel Island. A large base force is headed to Tulagi. Once supply is unloaded with the base force in Rabaul the transports will pick up the regiment there and take it back to Truk. I think it's not enough for Wake now and I might have to wait, considering the added troops and mines there now.

Burma: Still a lot of ships coming into Rangoon and nothing I can do about it. In about a week that will change.

Malaya: By the time everything gets put back together there should be about 3,500 AV moving into Singers in about 5-8 days. The fields are bombed daily.
