19 May 1942

1. GENERAL SITUATION
b) status of OPLAN (Lines of Operations and Decisive Points)

There are four lines of operations:
1. Cut SLOC to Australia: East and West.
2. Conquer the border area India-Burma by landings IOT delay an offensive toward Burma and to cut supply route to China.
3. Conquer, or, deny the use of Pearl Harbor.
4. Conquer the SRA (incl Palembang).

Then there are 11 Decisive Points (DP):
1. Singapore
2. Johnston Island
3. Sumatra (oil and fuel producing centers: Palembang-Djambi-Medan)
4. Java
5. Xmas island (Indian Ocean)
6. Horn island
7. Xmas island (Pacific)
8. Nomea
9. Western Burma
11. KB intact
13. Hawaii

This is the status as of 19 may 1942:

Cut SLOC to Australia: East and West. AMBER
5. Xmas island (Indian Ocean) AMBER
6. Horn island RED
7. Xmas island (Pacific) GREEN
8. Nomea RED
11. KB intact GREEN

NOTE:
5. limited sucess due to enemy holding Cocos island
6 and 8 are failures b/c KB1 was not available for 1,5 months after carrier battle in January 1942.
11 KB is as of this date about 100% operational (all CV can conduct flight operations).

Conquer the border area India-Burma by landings IOT delay an offensive toward Burma and to cut supply route to China. AMBER
1. Singapore GREEN
9. Western Burma GREEN

NOTE:
9. The landing at Chittagong was a major success causing the enemy to divert massive reinforcements to Eastern India. However, there is a need to include Ledo airfield as a DP (currently RED). Therefore, this Line of Operation is considered a limited success as of today.

Conquer, or, deny the use of Pearl Harbor. RED
2. Johnston Island RED
7. Xmas island (Pacific) GREEN
11. KB intact GREEN
13. Hawaii RED

NOTE:
2. Enemy success in holding Johnston island is of critical significance.

Conquer the SRA (incl Palembang). AMBER
1. Singapore GREEN
3. Sumatra (oil and fuel producing centers: Palembang-Djambi-Medan) AMBER
4. Java GREEN
5. Xmas island (Indian Ocean) AMBER

NOTE:
3. Limited success due to the total destruction of Palembang's oil and fuel producing facilities.

CONCLUSION:
This OPLAN has been more successfull in the Southern Army area of operations and less successfull in the 4th Fleet area.
The new OPLAN will build upon the success already achieved. The enemy has for example taken significant losses in ground troops compared to aircraft and ships (the later is something that Japan cannot replace easily and will therefore lose a war of attrition).
The new OPLAN will also take into account the present lack of fuel for navy operations.
Therefore, more focus will be on ARMY operations rather than on NAVY operations.
See section c) new OPLAN for details of future operations.
