von Kuchler's army are at last up with the enemy, but there is plenty of work for them to do in order to clear Latvia. The Soviet 11th Rifle Division blocks the northern approaches to Liepaja. The 11th and 58th Divisions are sent to try and seal off any escape of forces from the Baltic port. The attack is a success but the follow-up battle against the port, by three infantry divisions, fails to evict the stubborn defenders.

Once again 16th Army are way too behind the action to get involved. One division is sent to Dunaburg to relieve the panzers still holding the city, while Wiktorin's XXVII Corps (along with the 253rd) eliminate the 128th Rifle Division that had been holding out in the forest northeast of Kaunas.

Busch's performance has not exactly been stellar...

The terrain north of the Dvina is far from ideal tank country, but the Reinhardt's 1st and 6th Panzer Divisions are pressed into account to try and create some kind of breach in the Soviet lines north of the water. In a series of engagements the 182nd Rifle Division is forced into retreat, a broken force.

The final attack was to have been east of Dunaburg by two motorised divisions however, Hoepner thinks better of it; conserve these precious assets to exploit the bridgehead over the Dvina.

Time to quickly look at AGS before the maelstrom that is AGC. The value of Siege Artillery is evidenced as Lvov falls. As a result, 17th Army surge forward to engage the enemy - but in typical infantry fashion - cannot get there yet....

Meanwhile on the Black Sea Coast.....

The 11th Army is making its way steadily to Odessa - although there are many Soviet forces to the north and General Schubert will need to remain wary of these.

The 198th Infantry Division gets the ball rolling by forcing the 5th Cavalry (stationed on the north bank of the Dneistr) back into Odessa. Now trapped, the 9th Cavalry on the opposite bank, is destroyed by three Romanian divisions. This allows the German 50th Division to advance on Odessa from the west and cut the main train line out of the city. The 22nd and 76th Infantry Divisions then occupy ground north of the Ukrainian port and effectively seal it off (Black Sea Fleet permitting).

The 11th Army and the 4th Romanian Army then prepare for either a) a defence against a Soviet attack, or b) preparation for their own next offensive.

Further north, at Reichenau's 6th Army HQ, the General is looking for a place to breakthrough the Soviet line. Southeast of Rovno the 216th Motorised Division is holding station along with badly depleted rifle and tank divisions. Three divisions and just about all artillery available to the army are poured into the space occupied by the Soviets; one division disintegrates under the weight of shell, the other two retreat. The 9th and 75th Divisions follow-up the attack, at the end of which, only the motorised unit remains intact.

A breach begins to form....

Next up the 298th and 44th Divisions are employed to attack the 45th Tank Division, east of Tarnapol. The Soviets are pushed back yet again but von Reichenau has no more reserves left to pursue with.

At this stage von Kleist would like nothing more than to swing left and right with his panzers and bag millions of Soviets in two enormous pockets... sadly for him, this is Barbarossa. The Germans - and specifically von Kleist right now - have more issues than he can shake a stick at. Most troubling of these are:

1. The recent fuel shortage means his panzers are not all at the front to undertake such an operation (even if possible)
2. Insufficient panzer forces in the first place means that its not!

So what can be done?

Top of the agenda is the taking of Tarnopol. The infantry of 1st Panzergruppe is used along with the Hungarian Motorised Division. The battle is long and far from certain, but the city eventually falls.

von Rundstedt decides to leave 6th Army to their own devices and for the attack to proceed southeast. von Kleist orders Proskurow as the focus of the attack.

14th Panzer and 16th Motorised Divisions form up at their start positions. In front of them are two tank divisions, one of which has already been depleted in earlier fighting.

The Soviets retreat and von Kleist immediately orders a widening of the gap. To this end 16th Panzer and 25th Motorised Divisions attack the 195th Rifle Division that was on the right flank of the retreating Soviet tankers. The Soviets retreat in good order, but there is a chasm developing that threatens to rip Soviet forces in two.

At the shoulder of the neck being created, the 9th Panzer and SS Wiking Divisions are unable to assist their colleagues - their starting positions were too far back. Instead, they are used to develop 6th Army's pocket. This was not in the original plan, but the opportunity is potentially too good to miss.

With no further chance to make progress toward Proskurow, the 13th and 16th Panzer Divisions are ordered to use the last of their reserves to push against the northern shoulder of the considerable 'bulge' that has been created.

The German leadership is at a bit of a loss here. von Bock needs to keep a watchful eye on the newly raised Soviet armies to the south, but also desperately needs to kick on.

Von Bock, pleased that at least some of his infantry have caught up, orders von Kluge to get his infantry investing Minsk. The Siege Artillery will be required as soon as possible.

General Felber's XIII Corps, consisting of the 17th and 78th Divisions, mounts an attack against the 26th Tank Division, guarding the southern approaches to Minsk. The tanks are sent scurrying east, and two further divisions are ordered up by Field Marshal von Kluge to try and separate the tanks from the defenders of the Belorussian capital. The attack forces further retreating upon the Soviet tank crews and Minsk is now isolated.

Meanwhile, alarmed at the new formations appearing in the marshes, von Kluge sends General Farhmbacher's VII Corps south to keep a watching brief. 131st Division guards the flank of the Minsk besiegers, while the remainder of the army deploy against the six-strong pocket that has formed west of Minsk.

Meanwhile, northwest of Minsk, Generals Hoth and Strauss are getting torn off a strip. Both armies - the 4th Infantry and the key 3rd Panzergruppe - are woefully out of place and something of a shambles....

von Kluge has most of his units on the road - although who knows where to? while others are helping to form the northern arm of the pocket west of Minsk.

At least, with a full tank of fuel, the 3rd Panzergruppe is getting itself in shape. The 17th and 24th Rifle Divisions have been badly mauled and the 20th Motorised and 7th Panzer Divisions have continued to put space between Minsk and any would-be assistance.

And that leaves Guderian's 2nd Panzergruppe.

Guderian, recognising that much of his force are still in the rear due to the recent mini fuel crisis, considers diverting some of his troops to eliminate the pocket of Soviet troops. In the meantime, in order to guard the flanks, 1st Cavalry and 4th Panzer Divisions are sent to the southeast of Minsk. There, General Langermann's panzers despatch a Soviet straggler unit.

North of that position, the 100th Rifle Division are put under pressure by 17th Panzer and 10th Motorised. There is a body of troops with their backs to the river just beyond. They may be out of reach, but Guderian seeks to bag them...

The attack needs to be conducted at extreme range but pits 3 motorised and 2 panzer divisions against six Soviet units of variable strength and quality.

As expected, the Soviets were able to fight an inconclusive battle and so should be able to extricate at least some units across the river.

The final action of the turn is in trying to eliminate the Soviet pocket west of Minsk. von Bock, having lost confidence in Strauss's ability to do anything, orders the infantry armies to stand aside. Two infantry divisions and a panzer division from the 3rd Panzergruppe make the attack. The defenders are wiped out.

To me you seem like a mastermind. I have no idea what is good play in this game but it looks to me like the Soviets take a real pounding. [:)]

I do, however, like how forthcoming you are with your conflicts with your underlings and henchmen... eh... fellow Generals. [:D]

....and now a return to our scheduled programming.....

First things first. Before looking at the mountain of reports and other paperwork bulging over my in-tray, I get my adjutant to pour me a drink, take off my boots and light me a cuban cigar.

I undo my top button, stick my feet up on the desk, and pick up the T.V remote. I start the dvd, that has been just flown in from the front.

Its a good job dvd's haven't been invented - that would not have made good viewing. The Soviets have multiplied in number. Someone has got their intelligence very wrong if they think we are going to win this in 1941....

First things first. I order that the Siege Artillery be sent to von Bock as soon as possible - we need Minsk out of the way.

What other decisions are required?

- Do I think we should cut back on civilian oil production? Duh.. yeah, like 2-years ago, you know, when the war started [8|] But its me that has to make these decisions now and get up in everyone's grill an' %^&*... another 8pp spent just so I can cheese off the Fuhrer. My life SUCKS!!
- Next its trying to keep the rear echelon's happy in AGN. Good grief, as if von Leeb doesn't hate me enough as it is. I spend 5pp and ask Wagner to co-operate.
- More massaging of von Leeb's bleedin' bruised feelings. Is he a madchen or what?? I spend 3pp and hope a nice comfy fireside chat soothes his balding head...
- Hello? What's this? Atrocities suffered. Not really sure what is being said here. All I care about is that I do not upset von Bock. Another 6pp down the drain...
- Other decisions...6pp on loading, 18 on signals and I cannot be bothered to talk about - let alone spend points on - bloody trains!!

Operational
- I order the FSB to Lvov immediately.
- I order a truck refit for AGS - 12pp! (I do not know if this goes hand in hand with the FSB move re timing? but regardless - I need von Rundstedt on-side).
- I do not want to get on Goering's wrong side but I think moving one of the AGS airfields to Lvov makes sense - 5pp.

Right let's see what happens if I play the rest and refit card. I will choose one division in each panzergruppe for the purpose.

AGN - 36th Motorised Infantry (Power 57)
AGC - 19th Panzer (Power 61)
AGS - 13th Panzer (Power 61)

It will take around 8 days for each.

I give Command Focus to the 2nd Panzergruppe

Tactical air support goes to the 2nd and 4th Panzergruppen

16th Army are allocated theatre artillery assets
11th Army are allocated theatre artillery assets
