On 30 January 2397 the attack on Daidalun commenced, the Supremacy instantly declaring war on the Empire. The Battle of Daidalun was a rather large fight which would rage for the entirety of the first half of 2397. In April, the Char Dilba again expressed their displeasure at the presence of Imperial ships in what had until recently been Daidalun systems; in May, the Paratis made the surprise announcement of being amenable to trade Korrabian Spice with the Empire- the Paratis controlling the Galaxy's sole source of the luxury resource.Elsewhere in the far-flung reaches of the Galaxy Imperial scouts continued to discover Ancient ruins, the most recent being the Pillar of Durog which had already obviously been explored prior to the Empire's discovering it. Then, on 12 July an astonishing and, to the Empire, outrageous event occurred. Seemingly just as Phaerax resistance on Daidalun was being overcome, A very large Char Dilba fleet appeared in orbit and and the planet passed from Phaerax control to Naxxilian control overnight. All contact was lost with the Imperial ground forces on the planet. The Imperial Daidalun task force commander- in complete shock- quickly ordered all Imperial fleets out of the system and back to bases in Imperial territory. Totally enraged, STRATCOM immediately initiated plans to train new ground battalions for a second assault against Daidalun- this time very much prepared to risk all-out war with the Naxxilians. On 29 January 2398 the Ancient City of Aitun was discovered, this time yielding unusual technological benefits for the Empire.On 19 September of the same year, the Hidden Tower of Talln was discovered, the exploration of which again yielded interesting results.Throughout the entire year 2398, the Ancient Guardians opened a fierce espionage campaign against the Empire, with four of their agents being discovered and captured by Imperial counter-intelligence efforts. However, 2398 ended with the ominous revelation that the Ancient Guardians had actually begun to expand their influence through the Galaxy by way of seizing the colony of Surunea 3 from the Daidalun Supremacy. Even though this was a most unwelcome development to STRATCOM, preparations for the second attack on Daidalun proceeded without hesitation or delay.
