The 4Es got into it this turn as well, but contradictory to a grand showing in my replay, the CR shows a lacklustre performance. I saw 15+ bombs hit ships in port and reports of many A6M and other planes hit on the fields.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]DEI: [/font]All hell breaks loose in the New Year!! As expected. The IJN sets ships in 4-5 ship TFs and goes hunting. This works with one caveat that I'd hoped would balance the day; if they stay and fight multiple times they also might be still in the area during the day for the USN CV air to hit AND they would not have much left for a day 3 of this battle.

Looking forward to seeing if Force Z is still going, and how bad the damage is on other ships. I know PoW is afloat because two waves of Netties attacked in the day, luckily unescorted and hit by LR CAP P-40Bs.

It looks to me in a preliminary assessment that the IJN suffers 3 x CA sunk or in sinking condition. Maybe 1-2 others on fire and in danger. The Haruna is probably dinged a bit and Kongo burning slightly in port, with a hole in her side fro the Dutch sub. Also 2-3 other CAs are in Balikpapan after sub and mine hits. The IJN lose between 7-10 DD.

The Allies lose 3 x CA, most likely the Repulse, possibly the PoW is in a precarious state. The Allies lose 2 x Dutch CL and about 5-7 DD, mostly Dutch. Two USN DDs go down, and I think one RN DD likely sunk as well.

I can't wait to get the feel and plan for tomorrow. I'll hit the port with 4E and CVs unless something is still afloat nearby and moving slowly. Depending on what is coming though I have the option to run into the Sulu Sea with the CVs and two fresh SCTFs protecting, the others limping to Soerabaja to replenish and reform or retire.

I agree totally with you about they were expendable when it comes to TF-Z and the Dutch CLs. If you can get an even exchange or greater you have won a big victory. Your loses will be made up ten fold or greater but some of his are never made good, like CAs.

I'm out on a limb too and Jeff is playing aggressively in the style of the pre-war thinking by Japan; surface naval power wins and air units are there to support them. Can I get enough before he catches me? We'll see! [;)]

I'd like to do another pic update but the sequence is not complete. I was watching the replay on the tube in the morning and didn't get the screen shots copied past a certain point without wifi.

But ... here we go again!

I noticed that it seemed the mini-KB was coming closer rather than running away. I want to strike the mini-KB, so I stayed put with the CVs but failed to listen to my inner voice on one decision; strike range. I dint think it through carefully enough and it bit me back ... hard.

This is the decisive turn in the opening. My choices have been aggressive up till now but not imprudent. My enthusiasm and trust in these beginning flight crews and commanders was a bit too confident and I failed to consider one important factor. [:-]

PoW is still chugging along, but somehow didn't leave the battle area after last turn. This is a problem. More SCTFs are coming from the Palembang area and from the East through the Sulu Sea. I need a turn to neutralise them with air power, and this is where my decision had dire consequences.

The companied Anzac fleet was tasked with joining the USN Cs for more surface cover. They got waylaid and split up after yet another fresh CA TF hit them at night. At least they had a decent showing. Canberra was left in trouble, but so were the IJN CAs, or especially CA Nachi.

The Java and Mauritius also ran into Nachi and Mogami. They got a few more shots in, but this little TF ate up so many of the decent TFs ammo and ops points it essentially changed the game this turn.

The main USN CV screening TF is the Boise and company, and they finished off the Nachi but couldn't do much to Mogami. Weird. Still, this didn't expend their ammo, so they just continued on.

This was the difficult moment in the turn. Strike found the mini-KB but the escort was lacking. I hadn't thought about some staying back to escort the Devastators at 5 hexes, and that meant the package to try to break through 50 A6M of the mini-KB were not enough. Only 17 escorts showed up out of the 35 or so set to fly. About 25 DBs out of 45 still made it through, but then none hit!! [:@]

Between this and a follow on strike the USN strike package out 37 SBD. [:(] For no hits. [:-]

(Pet peeve #1. Strike planes targeting DD when there are three CVL/CVE in this TF and another BB and two CA. GRRR)

My mistake though. I should have restricted strike distance to 5 hexes. There are no CV strike planes here so no need to go all out. If I'd done this all planes would likely have made two devastating strikes on the BB TF nearing the area from the NE. Instead ...

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] The Dutch subs didn't get into the BB TF heading through the straits as I'd hoped. They also didn't track down the mini-KB, another mission for this turn. Maybe next one. I've got about 10 working this small area, and they've done well, but I need them to come through again!

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]DEI: [/font] After this turn I feel depressed. Such a good plan, and I deviated from my goals just slightly, took a risk of trying to knock out the mini-KB, the only thing keeping us from potentially wiping off all of the Balikpapan oil and the ships in port over the next few turns. Now we're in a bad place all of a sudden. More SCTFs converging, the PoW limping toward Soerabaja, the CV air strike package reduced by 40%, and several surface TFs damged and/or needing to replenish ammo.

I've made a choice to try to restrict strike distance to hit the ships in port in Balikpapan. I'm hoping the three SCTFs here for the Allies, including the CLs, can hold for a turn. I also expect he'll think we'll try to get everything moving to Soerabaja. It's another risk, but based on what I know is here, a good one for a turn. I just hope for a turn to get some 1000 pounders on the Kongo and company.

Though your trying to trap and kill the mini-KB was a furball knife fight, I tried the same thing in my game and my 3 American carriers and 2 British carriers against 3 CVLs of the mini-KB. One American carrier TF reacted and those assigned to follow didn't react exposing that one TF Lexington and Idomintable, with POW ti all of the Mini-KB strike aircraft. The Lexington took a torpedo while the POW and Idomitable were crippled and polished off later by surface forces. My carrier TFs did launch and sank two CVls and damaged 1 CVL and also sank 2 CSs. But after a few surface battles he lost the invasion force, after it dropped off the troops at Tarakan, which he took, for the cost of heavily damaging a British R class and sinking a CA and CL for 1 CA and 2 CLs. Not as bloody as your fight but I think it was worth the effort, it slowed his advance, crippled the Mini-KB and sank or damaged ships he could ill afford to be without during his most critical phase.

Definitely worth the effort, despite the early terrible quality of Allied CV strike packages. Possible to cause damage and needs to be tried nonetheless; after all, in one PBEM I managed to sink 3 KB CVs in January '42 with Buffalos and Devastators still on my CVs. I think this is now the 10th time I've mentioned it on these forums. Probably because it remains my greatest and most glorious WitP memory as of yet.

Did I mention I am really enjoying this early fight in the DEI. I think early-to-mid '42 is some of the most fun times that can be had for the Allies. It's like a dance where you are trying to avoid Japanese Mike Tyson's deadly right hook while getting little jabs in here and there (some of which can be devastating). A lot of fun can be had before you switch to the tedium of logistics and preparation for future invasions...and then the grind of '44 and '45.

All phases are fun in their own way of course for both sides. I'm hoping I can make '45 in my Japan game as I think doing the last defense of the home islands would be really interesting. Alas, I wonder if I have the skill at the moment to make it that far against a semi-decent Allied opponent.

Thanks guys. I was feeling a bit down after the recent turn since I knew I could have done better. I took a risk at the wrong moment. One more turn and some more reflection and I could have devastated the IJN forces in the area before running away. I know it wouldn't have been easy and may still have had some downsides, but this one turn will change the whole game.

I hope others do try stuff like this when the KB hangs out at PH for a week, as here, or some other deep So Pac cruise. I think there is so much opportunity to spank the IJ through strat bombing and snap invasions when they take liberties. I'll keep being aggressive, but probably not with as much force as here in the next little while! [;)]

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]DEI: [/font]It's been a busy few days. Finally a time to report on the last few turns. I didn't want to hurry this one, but I'm sure most readers have already found out from Lowpe's AAR the results of Jan 3.

It was a hard turn to watch. The image below shows it all. After several SCTFs converged on the area around Balikpapan, the Allied surface forces were overwhelmed. The CVs were open to attack, and of course it was the TF with the biggest guns that got through. [:(]

This is a tough loss, but entirely my fault. I could have lost her to a sub nearby, or a Nettie strike the other direction, but this is hard to swallow. I can't blame luck or misfortune.

Ultimately I chose o put these ships in harm's way for a reason, and there is still hope to d more damage to the Japanese through these next turns, but it'll be tough if the enterprise also gets caught and goes down. Reports are below to give an idea of the scale of the battles.
