Highlights: Sweeps continue over Lae

Japanese Home Islands:
SS Blackfish has found a fat tanker convoy near Saishu To including a converted whale factory ship, escorted by a CS and DDs - but the torps launched against a DD missed.

CBI:
An enemy unit has succeeded to infiltrate through the front-line between Katha and Lashio - how is beyond me - and now blocks the LOC. Luckily friendly units already have had marching orders for this hex and will arrive soon to engage and hopefully destroy the intruders. To help in this task, Allied bombers have been ordered from training / supply ferrying to ground attack. The enemy has been identified as the 7th RTA/A Division, it is hoped the Thai auxiliaries will show little stomach for prolonged resistance. Otherwise the supply situation for the front-line units may become cause for concern.
Not reported here each and every turn, but daily bombardments are being conducted at various locations (see selected reports), mainly for training exp, any losses inflicted are a bonus.

SWPac:
Milne Bay bombarded by two TFs of old USN CLs plus DDs, Netties mounted a night naval strike but without success.
Sweeps continued over Lae with reduced strength, the low-numbered air units took the brunt of the losses last turn and need a break, it's the turn of the higher-numbered air units to suffer their share:
Ki-43-IIb Oscar: 12 destroyed
A6M5 Zero: 6 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 3 destroyed
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 1 destroyed

P-39D Airacobra: 16 destroyed

Highlights: Sweeps over Magwe

Allied ships lost:
xAKL William McArthur and AM Jan van Amstel bombed at Port Hedland

CBI:
Renewed sweeps over Magwe :

Ki-43-IIb Oscar: 12 destroyed
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 15 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 3 destroyed

Hurricane IIc Trop: 13 destroyed
P-40K Warhawk: 5 destroyed

The 7th RTA/A Division behind Allied lines got pounded by fighter-bombers and bombers but the jungle terrain provides good cover.

Northwestern Australia:
ASW actions around Exmouth - those pesky I-boats...
Zeros and Vals attacked a small supply convoy at Port Hedland, sinking an xAKL, then came back to sink the AM escort.

SoPac:
Noumea bombarded by CLAAs and DDs. La Foa just to the north received the attention of BB South Dakota and DDs. Anything goes to get supply hits and keeps the enemy's engineers busy with repairs.

November 09/10, 1942

Highlights: Disaster over Magwe

CBI:
Sweeps over Magwe continue, but since the Hurricanes always fly first and take the brunt of losses - and kills - they stood down this turn. On their own and 5k lower compared to the Hurricanes as per house rule (2nd best maneuver band for sweeps), the Warhawks did not do too well...

Ki-43-IIb Oscar: 2 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed

P-40K Warhawk: 14 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 8 destroyed

With fighter pools still being very shallow, I cannot afford such losses.

The 7th RTA/A Division behind Allied lines got kicked out into another hex behind Allied lines by a force that already has had march orders for the hex concerned even before the intruders arrived - luckily, otherwise it would have taken two weeks or more to reach the occupied hex.

Northwestern Australia:
Port Hedland bombarded again by enemy cruisers, lots of damage. The situation is certainly unfavorable for the Allies, looks like "a base too far". The presence of Japanese carriers prevents the sizeable RN force from intervening against the enemy bombardment runs. Allied LBA available is too weak to cover Exmouth and Port Hedland and the RN. US carriers would be a solution, but they are still in the shops and needed elsewhere as well.

SWPac:
Milne Bay bombarded by DDs and then by CLs for negligible results, but night strike by Netties ineffective as well.

November 11/12, 1942

Highlights: Nibbeling away in PNG

Bases liberated:
Allied forces CAPTURE Dobadura

Allied ships lost:
xAK Clan Mactaggart sunk by SS I-25 near North Male on the Cape Town - Colombo track. The supply convoys on this route run unescorted due to lack of escorts...

Enemy ships sunk:
xAK Hakodate Maru is reported to have been sunk by SS Herring near Foochow
PB Shinkyo Maru sunk near Milne Bay by CL Detroit
xAK Totori Maru is reported to have been sunk by SS Porpoise near Toyohara

CBI:
I have forgotten to change the orders for the fighter-bombers and bombers after the dislocation of the 7th RTA/A Division. Some air units opted to hit the Imperial Guards/A Division near Kalemyo. Suits me as well, because I have launched a DA against that unit to probe enemy strength and to bloody the green Allied troops. Their inexperience was showing.

Northwestern Australia:
Exmouth expands airfield to size 6
Port Hedland expands airfield to size 2

Nice - but I don't have the airplanes to profit from these expansions.

Northern Australia:
Daly Waters expands airfield to size 3 - this raises the supply cap a notch from a drib to a trickle.

SWPac:
A DA at Kokoda by the 6th Aussi Division made good progress in grinding-down the enemy forces.
Dobadura has been captured by the 7th Australian Division. Unfortunately in DBB, Dobadura has an airbase potential of 1 - historically the Allies build a huge airdrome with multiple runways at that location. I need to take neighboring Buna to obtain a size 6 airbase.

49th FG/9th FS converting to P-38G Lightning - yay, a second P-38 squadron available soon (after assembling of the air-frames) !

The usual Milne Bay bombardment was spiced-up by the sinking of a PB, probably a fast transport run with supplies.

SoPac:
Allied Ships Bombarding Noumea - 2 CLAA pepper the airbase and the port with good results.
Allied Ships Bombarding La Foa - bunch of DDs hit almost nothing. Well, there is nothing apart from enemy ground troops.

And a rather unusual sight: ARD YFD-2 in ARD Soerabaja KM at Suva

YFD-2 had been damaged near Tahiti in the early months, barely survived and has spend a lot of time at Tahiti in portside repairs. With 50 points major float damage remaining, it was towed to Suva, which is home of the huge Dutch ARD which has made all the way from Java around Australia to Suva to support a future SoPac/CentPac offensive.

Highlights: More nibbling in PNG

Bases liberated:
Allied forces CAPTURE Kokoda

Enemy ships sunk:
AMc Yasushima Maru is reported to have been sunk by SS Trigger near Nauru Island

Japanese Home Islands:
Bombed by ASW aircraft in the East China Sea, SS Herring is struggling for survival:
Extensive flooding aboard SS Herring
Pumps fail aboard SS Herring, flooding increases...

CBI:
7th RTA/A Division is receiving the full attention of the Allied bombers again, while ground troops are "rushing" to contain, fix and ultimately destroy the enemy unit.
Another DA by the IV Indian Corps near Kalemyo got better results. The aim is to put pressure on the enemy by adding a second active front in Burma.
IV Indian "Corps" is actually pretty weak with just three brigades at the front, but I have managed to purchase two restricted Indian divisions for duty in Burma which are currently "fattening" in supply-rich Calcutta. I admit that I have cheated - I have split each division and disbanded the B and C elements into the pools, then "recombined" the A element with itself to get back the full division but at 1/3 strength - and thus paid only 1/3 of the PPs necessary to unrestrict the divisions. However, it now takes forever to rebuild the under-strength formations back to their original strength - probably longer than it would have taken to accumulate the PPs for the full costs. But time is on my side, as engineers still struggle with base and fort expansions in Bengal in order to raise the supply caps

SoPac:
CV Lexington sighted by E14Y1 Glen at 98,173 near Lord Howe Island - Lady Lex is transiting from CONUS to Sydney with light escort and no planes aboard for ASW - I hope the Glen-carrying I-Boat won't catch her!

La Foa bombarded again by DDs, causing minimal damage.
Noumea bombarded again, this time by BB South Dakota - couple of planes destroyed / damaged on the ground - nice.

Homefront / Rear areas:
LST-446 arrives at Portland - the first LargeSlowTarget available!

Previous report of sinking of DD Satsuki incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service

At Kalemyo, the Imperial Guards Div/A got a '-' malus for experience! IIRC, that unit starts with quite high experience so it must have taken on a large number of green replacements? Has it been in battle a lot before this?

@BBfanboy - Sorry, I can't tell you without going back through the ARR / reports manually (I'm not using Tracker). Maybe it suffered losses when attacking Singers?

November 15/16, 1942

Highlights: No bombardments of Milne Bay or Noumea this turn for a change.

Allied ships lost:
AM Cairns sunk by air at Port Hedland
SS Herring has lost her battle with the sea and sank near Amami Oshima

Japanese SRA:
SS Trusty lays minefield at Palembang - which is promptly cleared by AMc on station.

CBI:
The 7th RTA/A Division is on the receiving end of about 300 ground attack sorties per day, ranging from Chinese fighters to Liberators. Results - about 20-30 casualties per day. In open terrain the units would probably cease to exist after a few days, but in the jungles...

XV Indian Corps launched a DA near Lashio with mediocre results against a third of a division defending. Well, the "Corps"' is actually just a reinforced division due to stacking limits.

Northwestern Australia:
Vals claimed another victim at Port Hedland - AM Cairns.

SWPac:
The US 27th Infantry Division has reached Salamaua on the north coast of PNG and launched a recon bombardment.

Northwestern Australia:
Port Hedland bombarded once more by 3 CA, 1 CL - causing considerable damage and 650 casualties.

SWPac:
The US division at Salamaua promptly attracted a bombardment force (2 CA, 2 CL, DDs) which caused 60 casualties.
Milne Bay bombarded by the USN with 2 TFs (each 2 CL and DDs), causing light damage.

November 19/20, 1942

Highlights: Battle for Noumea has begun

CBI:
Enemy CAP trap near Katha over the isolated Thai unit, a dozen Allied fighters and bombers attacking this unit downed - I figured the hex was too far from enemy airfields for effective LRCAP. Oh well.

SWPac:
DA at Salamaua by the 27th ID has reduced enemy forts to level 1.

SoPac:
Invasion of New Caledonia has begun. Minesweeping DMS in the van, five CVs in two TFs, large amphib TF with troops, small amphib TF with supplies, SAG, bombardment TF, minelaying TF, two ASW forces - about 90% of the Pacific Fleet engaged. Two Marine Divisions plus support splashed ashore at La Foa, held by a lone brigade of the IJA 14th ID if intel and recon is right. Weak enemy air attacks beaten off by carrier CAP, carrier air also attacked the enemy airbase at Noumea to suppress it. I expect KB to intervene, may get dicey if the Marines fail to get an airbase up and running fast.

Highlights: La Foa captured, Port Hedland flattened

Bases liberated:
Allied forces CAPTURE La Foa

Allied ships lost:
xAK Iron Prince sunk by SS I-25 near North Male

CBI:
Bombers continue to pound the isolated Thai troops East of Katha - but in over 80 sorties not a single hit - darn jungle!

Northwestern Australia:
Exmouth has been mined by enemy submarine, but AMc Ceram is on guard. SS KXIII sighted but failed to engage an IJN SAG - Ise, Yamashiro, Fuso plus escorts - off Port Hedland, which then received a heavy pounding. On the way out, SS KXIII failed again to score *ggrrr*

SWPac:
In a near-repeat of Port Hedland, SS SS Seawolf failed to intercept an IJN bombardment force hitting Salamaua, but damage was light, thanks to the jungle terrain.

SoPac:
La Foa taken without much trouble, airbase construction starts. US naval forces retire to await the enemy's reaction, bombarding Noumea before leaving.

CentPac:
SS Trout encountered a large IJN force SE of Truk - no carriers sighted but TF composition includes a BBs Haruna and Kongo plus CS Chiyoda, so this was certainly KB barreling south. Two torps launched at a DD missed.

Re: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J): Doing better over Lae

Post by LargeSlowTarget »

November 23/24, 1942

Highlights: Magwe sweeps defeated, P-38s doing better over Lae

Allied ships lost:
SC PC-578 sunk by KB near Duff Islands

Enemy ships sunk:
xAK Yamayuri Maru is reported to have been sunk by SS Tarpon near Ominato on Nov 23, 1942

CBI:
Another round of sweeps against Magwe didn't go too well:

Ki-43-IIb Oscar: 8 destroyed
A6M5 Zero: 3 destroyed
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 5 destroyed

Hurricane IIc Trop: 28 destroyed

Enemy ground forces in the Lashio area got bombed but only light losses caused due to terrain.

Allied ground forces then launched a general attack and pushed-back the Japanese on the road between Bhamo and Lashio.

S-10 has torpedoed xAK Benledi near Koggala, the merchantship is struggling to remain afloat.

Northern Australia:
In the first attack of the gutted 4E bomber force since the Lae debacle, the ground forces at the dot base of Gove provided a milk run target for training.

SWPac:
Milne Bay bombarded by old USN CLs twice, the IJN bombarded Salamaua again with little effect.

P-38s swept Lae:

A6M2 Zero: 9 destroyed
A6M5 Zero: 4 destroyed
Ki-43-IIb Oscar: 5 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 1 destroyed

P-38G Lightning: 4 destroyed
P-38F Lightning: 1 destroyed

Allied ground attacks at Wau and Salamaua continued to weaken the enemy.

SoPac:
La Foa has reached 87% for the first airbase level, next turn we should be able to provide some local CAP.
Enemy submarines begin to gather between Noumea and Brisbane, Allied ASW reports many contacts.
One brigade of the IJA 14th Division has marched into La Foa either from Koumac or Noumea, and got kicked-out with heavy losses.
Submarine S-42 has encountered a potential fast transport TF near Luganville - CLs, DMS, AMC, AV plus escorts - reinforcements for Noumea or a counter-landing?
AVPs and AVDs have been ordered to base at La Foa to support Catalinas. I-173, I-175, I-8 and I-160 all tried to attack off La Foa but had no success.
Two weak Betty attacks - half a dozen planes each - failed to score as well.
SC PC-578 which had been sent north from Suva to sniff for KB promptly got sunk by Vals - aha!

Intel:
Previous report of sinking of DD Satsuki incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service
Previous report of sinking of SS RO-64 incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service
16/21st Ind.Mixed Brigade is loaded on a Japanese LB moving to Lae.

November 25/26, 1942

Highlights: Gathering clouds in the South Pacific

Allied ships lost:
xAK Suva sunk by sub near North Male.
xAK Benledi sinks as well, but I don't recall why.

Enemy ships sunk:
SSX Ha-12 is reported to have been sunk near Brisbane
SSX Ha-19 is reported to have been sunk near Brisbane

CBI:
I-25 found another merchant ship victim in the IO, although I try to way-point the convoys away from the standard routes.
Allied bombers concentrated on the elements of the 21st IJA Infantry Division on the road between Lashio and Paoshan. However, in the mountain terrain ar attacks are as futile as they are in the jungles and woodlands.
A deliberate attack by the 17th Indian Division failed.

SWPac:
Midget subs tried to attack at Brisbane but got caught even before reaching the harbor entrance by ASW task forces.
On PNG just bombardments on the ground plus pretty futile naval bombardments of Buna by the IJN and Milne Bay by the USN.

SoPac:
La Foa expands airfield to size 1 and receives fighters - P-40s from New Zealand, the Kiwis are itching for a fight after months of training.
KB is kept under surveillance by naval search from Suva, the gaggle of three TFs keeps approaching Noumea via a route east of Luganville and Tanna. The five US carriers have taken station near Norfolk Island, while Marine air units will use Norfolk Island as an unsinkable aircarft carrier. Let them come.

Intel:
Previous report of sinking of SS I-31 incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service

November 27/28, 1942

Highlights: KB attacked by accident and in vain by LBA

Allied ships lost:
xAK Empire Raja sunk by SS I-155 near Vizagapatnam

CBI:
Allied bombing attacks on ground forces around Lashio causing a few disabled devices. A deliberate attack on the Bhamo-Lashio road sent the remaining Japanese/Thai force packing. The enemy force blocking the Lashio-Paoshan road shows a movement arrow to the rear, a DA by Chinese troops may have convinced them to hurry up.

Northwestern Australia:
Operations report says "SS Grayling in ARD Tandjong Kv-2 at Perth**" > any idea what the "**" means?

SWPac:
Buna bombarded again by the IJN.
Enemy ground forces at Wau bombed by Mitchells and Marauders, followed by a deliberate attack. Only 1:4 odds against the Allies but heavier casualties on the Japanese side - slow progress.
Buna port bombarded by the under-strength 4Es, 66 sorties obtained several port supply hits.
Milne Bay bombarded as usual by the old USN CLs which sidestepped two lurking IJN subs.

SoPac:
La Foa expands fortifications to size 1.
A handful of B-24s conducted nuisance night bombing against Luganville and Noumea airbases to rob Japanese pilots of their sleep.
Despite this, Zeros have swept La Foa, losing 5 and killing 5 Kittyhawks.
First bombardment attack at Noumea show manageable opposition, DA will go in next turn.
SS Sealion sighted a Japanese task force near Efate, containing CLs, DDs, a DMS, a CM and an AMC. Probably carrying reinforcements - or a fast transport TF for evacuation?
SS Gudgeon launches six toprs against CV Shokaku near Anatom - all missed...
The Marine airmen on Norfolk have been too aggressive, or more precisely I have failed to coordinate their range settings with the range settings of the CVs one hex to the west. They promptly attacked KB at max range and lost 5 Wildcats, 9 Dauntless and 9 Avengers for nothing to show for. At least I got an idea of the CAP strength of KB - almost 140 A6M5. Not sure I still want to seek a carrier clash at this moment.
Newly arrived CA Wichita bombarded Funafuti for training.

CentPac:
PBY-4 Catalina sighting report: 7 Japanese ships at 172,103 near French Frigate Shoal, speed 18, Moving Southwest - yeah, sure! That is the barge convoy shuttling between PH and Midway, you nitwit...

NoPac:
SS Plunger lays minefield near Shikuka ( 126 , 44) and sets course for Adak Island.

Re: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J): Doing better over Lae

Post by LargeSlowTarget »

November 29/30, 1942

Highlights: Good sweep over Lae

Bases liberated:
Oro Bay

CBI:
A few Lilies have tried to ground-attack Allied forces advancing on Shwebo from the north, but the advance in open terrain has been covered by Warhawks on LRCAP from Kalemyo. Scratch 10 Lilies.

Northwestern Australia:
Zeros have swept Port Hedland and clashed with Australian Kittyhawks on CAP - score 11:3. Then 3 CA, one CL and DDs bombarded Port Hedland, causing moderate damage.

SWPac:
4Es bombed Buna again but met Nicks on LRCAP - a dozen bombers suffered damage. Same happened to 2Es bombing Oro Bay, one B-26 lost.

A sweep over Lae from Terapo had good results:
A6M2 Zero: 6 destroyed
A6M5 Zero: 6 destroyed
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 2 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed
Ki-43-IIb Oscar: 1 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed

P-38F Lightning: 1 destroyed
P-39D Airacobra: 1 destroyed

Deliberate ground attacks at Salamaua, Wau and Oro Bay, the latter fell to the Aussies.

SoPac:
Neither side seems to have the stomach for a carrier clash and keep out of range. The Japanese garrison at Noumea manages to defeat two deliberate attacks despite heavy losses.

LST: "SS Grayling in ARD Tandjong Kv-2 at Perth**" > any idea what the "**" means?
I don't know the meaning either, but I would check to see if another vessel or two has already been assigned to that ARD.

Re: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J): Noumea recaptured

Post by LargeSlowTarget »

December 01/02, 1942

Highlights: Lots of action around New Caledonia

Bases liberated:
Noumea

Allied ships lost:
AK Crater sunk by SS I-2 near Waipapakauri
S-30 sunk by I-173 near Noumea.

Enemy ships sunk:
PB Chiyo Maru #4 shared by S-18 and S-30 at Noumea.
CA Furutaka, AMC Aikoku Maru, DD Uzuki, DMS W-16 sunk by carrier air at Noumea

Northwestern Australia:
IJN surface force returning from bombarding Port Hedland missed by SS Searaven near Koepang. One of these days I'll get them.

SWPac:
Milne Bay bombarded yet again by light forces. Neighboring Deboyne Islands also received a dose of 6" shells in a recon bombardment - turned out the island has an enemy garrison of unknown strength.
Buna bombed by 4Es and 2Es, with a few Ki-45 on LRCAP, one Ki-45 and one A-20 destroyed. Two-thirds of the AUS 7th Division are ready to attack Buna but I want to wait for US tanks moving to encircle the enemy.
Bombardment attacks at Salamaua and Wau only du to shortage of supplies.

SoPac:
B-24s bombed Tanna port and heavily damaged AV Akitsushima with 9 hits - probably sunk.
Noumea fell to the Marines.
Apparently the Japanese have tried to evacuate the remnants, US CVs have hit a Japanese TF at Noumea from max range, sinking a number of ships and damaging many more.
USN submarines added more hits, but old S-30 lost a rare sub vs sub duel.
CA Furutaka observed sunk, CA Atago may have gone down as well.
KB observed retreating to the NW - surprised it did not stay to cover the evacuation run, which paid the price. [My opponent commented that he did not expect the evac run to linger at Noumea into the daylight hours.]

CentPac:
Funafuti bombarded again by USS Wichita, causing light damage.

December 03/04, 1942

Highlights: Japan scores several successes at sea

Allied ships lost:
xAK Tanda and xAK Tai Yang sunk by I-5 near Busselton
xAK Salween, xAK Alphard, xAK Toendjoek sunk by AMC Hokoku Maru between Perth and eastern map edge
xAKL Chaksang sunk by I-156 near Akyab
DD Walke mined at Noumea and foundered soon after

CBI:
A deliberate attack east of Lashio pushed back the Japanese troops, opening the Ledo Road to Paoshang. This may get a ton or two of supplies to China.
China btw is quiet, no actions whatsoever by either side. I still have a unit sitting behind the frontline, blocking the Tientsin - Tsinan railroad.

Western Australia:
Although Allied convoy routes of the CT - Perth track have been shifted south a bit, the Japanese got wind of it. An IJN AMC raider managed to get among an Allied convoy - and the only one not protected by an escorting Allied AMC or CL... A sub lurking just of the landfall point added more losses.
With supplies running low at Port Hedland I had to risk a supply run, covered by the RN and what's left of the RNN. CLAA Van Heemskerck got torpedoed by SS RO-34 lurking just off Port Hedland. Zeros swept Port Hedland, the Kittyhawks on CAP held their own but too few were left to oppose the following Netties which scored one torpedo hit each on BB Ramillies and BB Royal Sovereign. Two more heavies needing a the long trip to the CT repair yards. More fighters have been ordered to Port Hedland.

Northern Australia:
A recon-in-force has departed Daly Waters to investigate Katharine, with another recon force heading for Gove.

SWPac:
Allied bombers concentrated on hitting Buna. 180 fighters reported at Lae. With only 50 P-38s available, bombing Lae seems too risky.

SoPac:
Noumea is swept of mines - claiming a DD escorting the DMS - and a huge convoy lands reinforcements, construction assets and supplies.
USN DDs bombard Koumac, held by the 82nd Naval Guard Unit. The Marines will move overland to dig them out.
IJN subs are thick around Noumea, after several encounters and close calls one of them finally scored - SS I-174 has put two fish into Lady Lex which suffered a fuel storgae explosion. 49(36) float damage, if nothing else happens to her she should be able to make port. Down to four operational carriers - against the full KB plus new construction. It will be a long wait for the Essex class hulls. In the meantime the picking of low-hanging fruits will continue.
