RE: Wish List
Battle from the Bulge ... that will be awesome.
This game engine is the best ... I check the CotA forums almost every day.
What does it take to be on a development team like the one for the eastern front? I'm quite well read in the battles fought from late 42 to 44 on the eastern front. I have several books and articles on Kursk, Kharkov, Korsun aka Cherkassy, the battles to relieve the 6th Armee in Stalingrad, etc. etc. I have the books on Raus, Manstein, Guderian, and several general books and articles about the battles.
I may be able to provide historical information if that's the kind of service that's needed.
let me know if it is

Can I assume this was meant for the amphibious assault enquiry post [#240] in this thread?

Great--- I can't wait to see how the amphiboius aspect is portrayed!
RE: Wish List
I'm new to HTTR and am certainly impressed, particularly since the tips and startegy guides from "MarkShot" and "Golf33" have help tremendously in undrestanding the game mechanics). I didn't read every post on this thread so I may have missed it, but this game screams out for other battles, whether Buldge or Normandy or East Front. I was frankly surprised, perplexed, and disappointed that the next game in this series is going to be in Greece???? Why??? You'd have certainly kept my attention and enthusiasm if you'd gone with more well known battle/campaigns!
RE: Wish List
Ok - A very late suggestion post. Having played "Combat Mission" and the "PzC" series, this game really needs its maps to be able to portray 3D. I find this to be this game's biggest weakness. Maybe as I get more familiar with the game's visual look, things may become more intuitive to me, but right now I'm finding myself having to spend a great deal of time using the LOS tool because the 2D God views in this game just don't convey a sense of the terrain.

Trust me, read a good book about it and you'll change your mind. It's definately an interesting campaign that saw action from just about every type of weapon and formation.
Personally I'm really excited about playing a wargame that takes place when the german army was actually at it's peak - not when it was disintegrating and retreating at every turn. I love to play the germans but tired of playing scratched together/ad-hoc units in HTTR etc. Playing with full organizations of mountain troops, paras, and panzers should be really fun. Can't wait

RE: Wish List
BK6583,
Thanks for the feedback.
Re 3D Maps. Yes I too would like them - well like you get in Google Earth anyway. We need to rewrite our graphics engine for that and trust me that is no trivial undertaking. First we need to sell lots of HTTR and COTA. Then we'll see if we can afford to do it. So tell your mates to buy a copy or two.
Re Other Battles. Our next title to be releases very soon is Conquest of the Aegean ( COTA ). Sure you may never have heard of it but there is plenty of action in this one that will delight even the most jaded wargamer. Why this focus? Well for some time we kept getting complaints about how every developer just redoes the same old tired battles - eg Normandy, Bulge etc. So we decided to do something a little different this time. The game after that will be Battles from the Bulge ( BFTB ) so we'll return to a favourite.
After that it depends on which of our Data Design Teams ( DDT ) comes in first. We have DDTs set up now for West Front ( they're doing BFTB ), East Front ( Chir River Battles 1942 - the western flank of Stalingrad ), North Africa ( O'Connor's Offensive 1940 through to Crusader 1941 ), Pacific ( Battles from the SWPacific including Guadalcanal, Finschafen and Bouganville ) and Modern ( we're just starting this one up this week anbd we have yet to decide on the scope ).
Thanks for the feedback.

RE: Wish List
Arjuna,
Molotov_Billy's post above changed my mind because he's right - particularly where Crete is concerned, COTA will be a great head banger. I'll certainly try to encourage gamers I know to buy this series, but you realize you may be a victim of your own design. HTTR is an incredibly complex game with a very steep learning curve. Many gamers just don't have the time or are not willing to put in the effort required to learn this game system. That said, if they don't buy HTTR and COTA, then they're missing out on an incredibly rich, detailed, and very entertaining game that has truly broken the mold and fits in nicely scale wise between "Combat Mission" and the "PzC" series (that's why I was drooling for more ETO related games of this series). If there's anyone out there on the fence about buying HTTR - buy it! Once you get reasonably comfortable with the game mechanics you won't be disappointed.
PS: To add to a previous poster, I'd also like to see arty and mortars have a "lay smoke" function as well.

Agreed on complexity and perhaps for newcomers incredibly steep curve but I think for the average WW2 buff/strategy-gamer the learning curve is very 'low-inclined' and easy to pick-up particularly even after starting off with 2 or 3 tutorial scenarios [though the 'curve'does go up to a great height to fully Master the game imho]. I feel most strategy-game fans are actually aware that a bit of time must be put in to start to get the feel of such games as HTTR.
Yeah, I'd like to see smoke barrage going off before an amphibious assault at Nijmegen by the 82nd-but more as a massive bombardment for strategic purposes rather than individual/piecemeal units. I suppose a limit of 1 or 2 'smoke barrage pods' for Allies would be a consideration - and only if a very large number of guns[arty and-or tanks] are firing together.
Also, as a consideration for the wish-list, Is added background music as an option being mulled over - it seems there may be some players in favour, though in another recent thread in the forum there is a debate on the topic - pros/cons ?

RE: Wish List
Actually, I suspect that the initial learning curve is lower for people who aren't hard-core wargamers, because they have less to unlearn!

RE: Wish List
Something came to my mind while I revisited another thread in this forum by BK6853 concerning Nijmegen.
For the 'older folks' like me here who likely started off with strategy/tactical board games like Advanced Squad leader in the 70's/80's/90's [last century! [8|] ]. These games put emphasis many times on gaining 'victory points' for exiting a certain edge of the map as an objective.
Whenever I play the Nijmegen or Eindhoven Campaigns I find myself trying to play historically accurate by not using a significant portion of 30 Corps forces if at all possible, and bunch them up at the northern edge of Hell's Highway on these maps to represent the fact that they are pushing onto Arnhem.
But this presents a problem by the fact that these bunched units are pummeled by German artillery. My screenshot shows what I mean. Could such an 'exit' feature be added whereby victory conditions relate to exiting considerable portions of 30 Corps off the north end [center] of the maps of Nijmegen and Eindhoven campaigns?

Exit objectives are a new feature for COTA, and when the Bulge game comes out, Nijmegen and Eindhoven campaigns can be redesigned using that feature. (as far as I know...[;)] )

RE: Wish List
I would like to see full fledged maps. In the sense of seeing the entire operation / campaign.
For instance: Considering OMG be able to see the entire operation at once for a full scale operation management. For command, I think the same way in which a major commander could infact be subordinate to another commander in a seperate area of the operation. This may be useful in certain situations.
Also, reinforcements and supplies: Do something 'more' than if the axis holds the drop zone, you get a minimal negative combat modifier on arrival. Or supplies, if they are 'dropped' in enemy hands this should be considered. Not for the sake of historical clarity, but in the bounds of the game. (I.e. I hold the area in which supplies are dropped, so I get them all; or the axis holds the area so they get the supplies and I get nothing. or some where in between for contested locations)

A campaign feature is already on the wish list. In fact we started this for Conquest of the Aegean ( COTA ) but had to shelve it in order to accomodate mixed mode movement, which proved critical to simulate ops in the Greek terrain.
TT2811 - AI - UI - Campaign Feature
The other aspect you raise here - ie Team Play - is also on our wish list. Like the Campaign feature this is a very BIG job. Our plan is to undertake one new big feature each title released. And while I would dearly love to have Team Play and the Campaign feature, there are some othe more pressing requirements for our upcoming titles.
For instance, minefields for Battles from the Bulge ( BFTB ), vehicle breakdown and recovery for the first of our North African series, off-map fire support for the first of our Pacific series, Soviet doctrine for the first of our East Front series and helicopters for the first of our Modern series. All of these are "enabling" technologies required to provide a realistic simulation of the battles concerned. So they have to take priority.

Good point.

RE: Wish List
Ok, if it is difficult to do a full fledged campaign setup, could you have a flow chart of how to proceed from one scenario to the the next based on outcome? I really enjoy playing HTTR but for all the effort in historical unit accuracy (or, in some cases, hypothetical unit accuracy), I don't get a sense of how the campaign played out historically because I don't know in which order I shoud progress. I realize that doing some research on the era will enlighten me, but one of the things I like about war games is gaining the sense of what happened (or what could happen with an unexpected outcome). The first wargame I ever played was Panzer General. I loved the fact that I could see what would happen if one side lost a scenario they historically won, or vice versa. I know that the indiviual hypothetical scenarios are in HTTR but I'm not sure what I should do based on the outcome of a battle. Even a simple flow chart would be greatly appreciated in future games.

I believe Golf33 had posted somewhere the historical sequence of scenarios in the game.
