RE: Mouse Trap?
It's been a very busy week for me. Wasn't able to post, but we've been able to play 8 more days of this bloody war.
I'll try to be a bit more sintetic than before and cut some useless combat reports in order to let the reader go through these lines easier.
Other eight days of War.(11 April 42-19 April 42)
BURMA:
The siege of Mykitina goes on.the forts are not a problem, but without any air support every single night the british engeeners
build up them again. The main problem here is the night bombing factor. The Allies do not even try a daylight mission and
rules the skies simply closing my airfields with nightime bombings. I tried to make a raid starting from Mandalay over Mytikina.
Moved during nighttime 100 bombers and 50 fighters from Saigon. The day after they attacked the AF there, but due to the
fatigue levels i lost 25 planes to various reason and only destroyed 45 of theirs. I quickly moved my groups back to Saigon, fearing
the new arrived wellingtons, but more than 30 had to remain at Mandalay for repairs.Useless to say that night a Horde of bombers and fighters
strafed at 5000 fts mandalay Af and annihilated made me paid the price. During this 2 days adventure i've lost 32 pilots and 55 planes and achieved no real result.
I decide to abbandon every effort to hold the skies of Burma. Simply impossible with these conditions. I believe it's a bit gamey
but my opponent says it's his only way of gaining some points at this stage:-(
Rangoon's oilfields are completely destroyed thanks to the Liberators. It's going to be a pain in the future'cause i can clearly see how things will grow up and develop in this theatre: he will keep on bombing my bases and my men untill, gaining exp and depleting my supplies untill he will be strong enough to advance with his ground troops. Gotta concentrate my efforts to plan a second defensive perimeter around Saigon for the comming year.

In China i'm steamrolling the country even if very slowly. Chungking is almost isolated and i'm looking forward to combine my armies
to Burma.China should give me the points to get to 4-1 ratio for the end of the year.
Kunming Fell and now my 2 southern armies divided. 3 divisions will march towards Lashio to free the way towards Burma, while the rest of my forces, with arty and eng units will move towards Chungking from the east and close the envelope in central China.
PACIFIC:
While the HUGE transport convoy system is moving my divisions towards Truk to be ready for PM and op. Mouse trap, one of my subs patrolling near
Palmyra has been attacked by a SBD. The next day a brave Glenn reported the presence of a CV TF moving southeast towards Canton.
That means he's moving his CVs in the south pac in order to be ready to counter attack and repulse my invasion of PM.
I immediately allerted my CVs at Truk and formed 3 CVs TF, supported by 2 surface TFs and 2 Oilers TFs. Tanaka is leading there southwestwards.
They'll try to intercept the Al CVs between Canton and Nanomea. At Tarawa all the air groups have been allerted and 2 Emilies chutais are already
patrolling the seas.I want to catch him off guard!
on the 18th one of my betties based at Tarawa spotted his CVs 9 hexes north of Canton Island moving southwest. He's moving faster than my CVs that are still in the waters between Truk and Kwalajein(sp?), so i ordered my 3 CV TFs to move at Max speed , hoping to engage a bit more south of what planned, let's say between Nanomea atoll and Lungaville. The problem is that his 35 catalinas at Nanomea will surely spot my groups and he'll be allerted, but at this stage i cannot go back.
The bombarment TF including 2 BBs and 4 CAs that had to close nanome atoll AF did not achieve any good result. The costal gun counter fire was very strong and my ships were not able to inflict any sensible damage to the airfield:-(
Now 2 dds are moving towards Canton Island. They will be in position two or 3 days before my CVs....want to see how he will manage with this easy hunt...if he'll move his CVs towards my 2 poor dds i should get some precious time to get into the right position to attack!
At Lae my 2 daitais of sallies and lillies are trying to make PM burn some supply but, being unable to stop the fast trasports that every night bring supplies and men to PM , i'm feeling a bit frustrated.
BTW i'm moving a lot of air forces in the south Pac area. the first A6M3 daitais arrived at 18th April at lunga, while 2 more a6m2 daitais will get into south pac area within 1 week.
I'll try to be a bit more sintetic than before and cut some useless combat reports in order to let the reader go through these lines easier.

RE: Mouse Trap?
Now that Akyab AF is open again and Lungaville's one is size 4 I officially asked my opponent to stop with night bombing. It's a bug. No way. And the whole match is unbalanced.
Still waiting for an answer...

Hi, What is wrong with the night bombing? Looks ok to me but I might have missed the result that troubles you.

RE: Mouse Trap?
Hi Mogami,
night bombing is completely unbalanced and it's screwing up my game. I understand you do not have time to scroll through the combat reports i've been posting for a month. I'll try to sumerize it up for you.
My opponent started to night bomb my AFs in Burma at the beginning of March 42, taking off from Dacca, diamond Harbour and Chandupur. He always bomb at 5,000 fts. I tried to put 3 zero daitais and 50 oscars on night CAP. 3 Heavy AA units are based at Rangoon. Now it's mid April and the results are these: more than 250 jap planes destroyed on the ground at Rangoon. 0 enemy bombers shot down in A2A combat. very few op losses and fewer AA losses for allied bombers. Consider that he's using more than 500 bombers spread upon 5 bases. I was forced to move back to saigon all my air groups: most of them have something like 20/25 pilots and 5 or 6 planes.....
He's completely avoided any daylight engagement knowing that during nightime he's playing safe. I understand that night CAP with planes without radar should be very very difficult. What i consider completely bugged is the Op losses ratio and the AA effectiveness at night, which is close to nothing. This feature let him control the skies without risking anything and lets him gain experience for his air groups for the cost of nothing.
Night bombing is still too effective, but the main problem is that there is no counter measure against it and the op losses, the fatigue/morale levels and the AA night fire are features completely bad worked.

RE: Mouse Trap?
Hi, I went back as far as early Feb and I must have missed the raids were a lot of Japanese AC were destroyed in one night. Of course 5 per night for 45 days is a lot to lose but does not show night bombing to be skewed.
I even see you report enemy OP loss from time to time.
unless you have radar equipped night fighters and a radar equipped baseforce you are wasting you time putting up night figheters.
Can I have a file to check the ratings for your AA units ?
By now I am guessing his bomber groups are quite veteran. He might have good leaders all the way down.
I've had to abandon more then a few Japanese airfields when the Allies use heavy bombers at night.
The bad news is by the time Japan gets night fighters the Allies have lots of long range escorts and switch to day bombing.
Rangoon is a death trap for Allied infantry and Japanese air.
What you need to do is counter his night bombing with day bombing that catches his bombers on the ground. Use all the airfields in the Rangoon area rather then piling up on just one. Save the fighters for escort they are hopeless at night.
Night bombing was a favorite of the RAF. By the time the Pacific war began they had been night bombing for almost 2 years. They know what they are doing.

RE: Mouse Trap?
Mogami,
your explanation is strong and i do agree with the fact that night bombing is a key for allied player in a Pacific war game. What i try to point out is that his bombers do not suffer any penalties to fly at 5000 fts and against what should be a strong AA battery( 3 units with HQ air units). 5 pr night? no mogami, there where nights where i lost more than 15 planes on the ground and there no way to counter attack duting daytime, 'cause Chadupur, Dacca and Diamond are too far away for my sallies. consider the fact that for each plane destroyed on the ground at least 4 are damaged.
15 Martins at 5,000 fts can destroy 5 planes on the ground and damage more than 10. Now if you use 50 blenheims, 30 liberators, 10 IL4s, 30 Martins and 30 Hudsons every single night you can easily calculate what are the kill ratios!
You ask about op. losses? Well, i check every single day my intel screen and in the last month not more than 4 op. losses were suffered by the allies in one single day.
BTW i know you are a very experienced jap player, so probably you are right, but i really think something in night bombing is still broken...

RE: Mouse Trap?
Hi, The game file during your orders phase. The next turn you get send it to me
MNeer1@woh.rr.com
I'm not saying it does not require some adjustment possibly but the Japanese player will never be happy with Allied night bombing. (Even if the enemy does lose more in Ops)
If your Sally don't have range then you must move them out and move in the bombers that do have the range. (Betty/Nell) Just build up 2 or 3 size 4 or large airfields and spread them out. You are going to lose bombers because you have to bomb during the day in order to catch his bombers on the ground. But you could of course bomb at night just to knock the airfields out but it will require a lot of bombers and some time before you see any result. (But then your bombers will not be on the ground at night either)
Plan ahead. Bases that are flying day missions will be hit by the enemy at night and you have no defense except range. So use bases out of range for most enemy bombers.
(Betty/Nell range for normal loads is 15 and 21 for extended but reduced loads)
Bases that are flying night missions become targets to day attacks. Provide CAP for these bases but again you don't need to base the CAP where they are flying. Use a close base and LRCAP now the enemy has two targets (the bombers and the CAP each is vacent from their home field at different times and each are deployed in different fields)
If the enemy attacks are without escort he will not want to fly daylight raids (that is what began the night bombing in the first place.)
As it is I would guess even if game was perfect match to historical OP loss the Japanese would lose more fighters at night then Allied bombers.

RE: Mouse Trap?
Thanks Mogami for your suggestion
I'll try to do something following your ideas, but i'm quite reluctant to use my Navy bombers for ground bombings. I always keep an aye on them , trying to save those priceless exp pilots for naval interdiction....but as the situation being so negative i'll probably give a try to your plan.
Thanks very much!

RE: Mouse Trap?
Hi, I always just leave Rangoon and area empty. I fly CAP over my ground units from Bangkok or Tavoy. But then I don't try to take Burma. I only want Rangoon so enemy can't bomb Bangkok or Saigon.
I keep a float plane or recon plane at Rangoon so enemy sees aircraft icon. (As Allies I do this all over SRA you should see the Japanese missions flown against empty bases)
(I'm a Japanese wuss)

RE: Mouse Trap?
Still thanks mogami.
Shifting from one front ( Burma ) to another (south pacific) , i'd really like to know what you guys think of the current situation. Will Tanaka be able to intercept and destroy american carriers in their rush towards Noumea? and if not should i abbandon the idea of taking PM where already 55k nemy troops are fortifying?
I'm not that used to the rule for TF movements so i ask:
assuming that my recon is right and allied CVs are moving at 12 knots, is it normal that in 1 days they have moved 5/6 hexes forward?
My CVs at full speed will move at 24 knots...so in theory exactly the double speed of his Cvs, but the green radius says that tomorrow my cvs will only be 5 more hexes southwards....if i have to believe to the radius i won't be able to catch allied CVs if they do not turn northwards...is that right?( see map above)

RE: Mouse Trap?
greetings....
Did you assigned Tanaka for CV TF leader (or i misunderstood something?)?
Did you assigned Tanaka for CV TF leader (or i misunderstood something?)?

RE: Mouse Trap?
I hope you did not assign Tanaka to the CV's. I have found him lacking for CV TF's. He is the best for surface combat groups.
Your CV's should be about 10 hexes at full speed. That green circle is for each phase if I am not mistaken. Or to be really sure, find the slow ships and strip them out and only use the 30 knoter's.
But since his convoy is moving at 12 knots, I would either suspect a transport convoy with a CV in it for CAP purposes or it might have a CVE in it. Unless he is just strolling to where ever he is going.
my .02 cents anyway.

Turning point in the Pacific
The 23rd of April will remain written in the History of the Empire of Japan.
The plans of the great admiralty prooved themself to be perfect.
At 12 o'clock a pete loaded on Nissan CS spotted the Yorktown in the gulf of the atoll of Nanomea.
The americans were ready to fight and launch two waves of planes against Tanaka's Kido Butai.
The best pilots of the empire engaged the enemies over the skies upon our fleet.
Each single american plane was shot down!
When the last torpedo bombers has been destroyed by our Flak, Tanaka decided to send his 2 waves of planes.
The result was already written!
A decisive battle for the dominion of the southern seas has been won!
Not a single Japanese ship has been touched and one entire american carrier task force have been sunk!
Buckmaster, that led the enemy TF from the deck of the yorktown went down with his ships.
Now the hands of Yamamoto are free to launch the operation Mouse Trap for the conquest of Port Moresby!
BANZAI!!!!

BANZAI!!!!

The day after
Well, after the epic battle of yesterday i decided to spread my 3 carrier TFs in order to get over what remains of the american fleet.
One TF moved towards Canton, while the other 2s moved south of Nanomea atoll.
What a nasty surprise! A part of the damaged allied fleet engaged at night my carriers...the enemy got sunk but 3 of my ships( incuding a carrier) suffered some damages...
In Burma i ordered my sallies to make a night strike over akyab, just to test their abilities...

A Bloody but decisive day!
