Yup, I'm posting and commenting on a lot of different toys simultanously Inq [;)]

It surely looks like Andy has been using 100s of transports to evacuate Waingapoe!
When the assault went in we got an adjusted AV of 3377.
Enemy had "only" 1018 AV left, adjusted to 1642 with 2 forts.

So we got an immediate 2-1 odds and the enemy is doomed to build new Burma railroads within the end of the month [8D]
Incredible how much those air transports can evacuate despite round the clock air and sea bombardments.
- Still, there are some 35400 troops, 550 guns and 768 vehicles left that will go into the bag.

The Waingapoe campaign will therefore shortly be over and end in a complete Japanese victory [&o]

I have already diverted the convoy with the reserve division and started planning how to use our 4500 AV at Waingapoe.
- Want 2500 as a tactical reserve, the remaining 2000 will be distributed for defensive purposes in the SRA.

The question is were to place our reserve troops; Singapore, Soerabaja or Marianas?
I think the latter is safe for now and we got heavy defenses at Soerabaja already. I'm more tempted moving our reserves closer to Burma as this theatre is heating up.

What do you think?

Also remember; we got lots of reinforcements coming in over the next month, probably anothe 2000 AV that will move into the various defensive zones.

That's a motley group of troops that Andy had for that attack. If that's the best that he could put together for such an important mission than he must have little or nothing elsewhere.

Why not use your spare troops to re-invade Oz, but this time in the middle of the East Coast. Take several of the smaller bases on the coastal rail line and then move north and south simultaneously. I bet that he has next to nothing there, and it will take him a month to move forces from northern Oz.

It's not like he has any Naval left to defend the area.

Hi PzB - thanks for the welcome. Normally I just lurk - [;)]

Can I ask why you split your BB into multiple TFs for the bombardment of Waingapoe? Wouldn't you see a better bombardment effect with a big "hammer-strike" instead of several smaller "hammer-taps?"

Also - when you bombard you get an option to set how close you want your ships to be. Do you think it's best to be close when performing the bombardment mission? Or do you usually bombard from a more distant range?

Yes, Singers and Soerabaja would both be good places...Marianas should slowly be reinforced; then we would cover most critical eventualities.

A motley crew perhaps, but then again Waingapoe was just one of several planned invasion targets.
All the major reinforcements had to be brought in ad-hoc and many of those ended up with Davy Jones [;)]
- Intel reports 45 units at Port Hedland so not overly convinced Andy is short on anything.

Attacking bases with LCU makes me uncomfy for 2 reasons;
1. Unless 100% prepped invading units take 40-50% casualties during landing
2. Enemy LBA; if KB is attacked by 1-200 4E bombers the Zekes on CAP will all become damaged. Much more dangerous than Hellcats strangely enough

So hit and run is better, and the further from land and LBA the better [:'(]

Those TFs bombarded last turn BJ, I kept them around, divided into a new TF and sent them back to deliver another bombardment before going home and before our ground assault going in. But as discussed earlier; I'm unsure about the advantages of sending in huge bombardment TS vs smaller ones; especially when we want to achieve increased disruption. Not found much difference in performing close / medium / long range bombardments either...excepct from the fact that coastal artillery is more likely to land hits when you get closer than 8-10k yards.

Several reasons actually;

1. We had fighters over Waingapoe more or less all the time (just not on LRCAP)
2. I didn't think it possible to evacuate an Army from a heavily damaged base (last few turns it have been difficult to hit the airfields so they again became open for business)
3. Waingapoe is 20+ hexes from nearest Allied base in Northern Oz

When thinking about it I do recollect the abnormous ability of Allied air transport to reinforce or evacuate large number of troops with little effort.
In real life such activities would not have gone unnoticed; transports would have to land, be loaded and turned around..leaving plenty of activity and targets to be spotted by our recons and nearby troops actually besieging Waingapoe.

On the other hand; we can now finish of the majority of enemy troops with relatively ease. Hopefully this will allow a quick redeployment of our troops and little damage to our LCUs. Facing 1800 instead of 1000 AV would have required a prolonged siege and most likely have wrecked or reduced the combat abilities of our best troops for months.

Dunkirk in the Pacific , no way can andy get anything much bigger than a 25Pdr into a trasport plane. So heavy kit will all be there for you to run over in a few turns. Not having played this far into the game i cannot comment on allied ability to replace tanks and arty but i suspect that only the american pools are flush with guns/tanks and troops while the commonwealth forces will take a long time to recover. given that Aussie reinforcement numbers actually shrink in 43/44 and only the Indian numbers get better, I doubt the aussie units he's partially recovered will be much more than shells for a long long time.

Those big Coronados have a load carrying ability of 12,000 with many of his transports able to load 10,000. Some other transports have slightly less or would operate at extended range. I would bet some of those salvaged units will need about 4 month at least to be ready again. Lots of replacements and training back up.

Yes...and it would have been party time to fly your Tojo around Waingapoe looking for huge 4E seplanes sitting at anchor or Commandos or Libs sitting at a wrecked airport
waiting to be shot to pieces [8|]

I'm happy with what we get in the Waingapoe pocket; Allies no doubt got lots more LCU capacity than navy capacity right now! [:D]
What I'm concerned with is freeing up Jap strategic reserves now fully committed to an SRA sink hole.

Andy expected Waingapoe to fall this turn...bud a bad dice roll and it continues to hold on.
Low on supplies, that's critical - we disrupted enemy attempts at unloading quite efficiently.

Now we can pump her out and move her to Soerabaja. Maybe the sub with 95 flood also will make it, but still 90 and takes time to make the boat ready for transfer to larger facilities.

It surely looks like Andy has been using 100s of transports to evacuate Waingapoe!
When the assault went in we got an adjusted AV of 3377.
Enemy had "only" 1018 AV left, adjusted to 1642 with 2 forts.

You were just 90 points above minimum. You DO realize, that someday your LUCK will run out? [:D]

So we got an immediate 2-1 odds and the enemy is doomed to build new Burma railroads within the end of the month [8D]

No, wonder industry is in mess, with such planning.

- Still, there are some 35400 troops, 550 guns and 768 vehicles left that will go into the bag.

Disabled units are counted somehow differently. You should easily bag 50k troops.

The question is were to place our reserve troops; Singapore, Soerabaja or Marianas?
I think the latter is safe for now and we got heavy defenses at Soerabaja already. I'm more tempted moving our reserves closer to Burma as this theatre is heating up.

B29s arrive in few months, so Andy probably will want to have base for them, to bombard Japan industry.
China is out of question, because HR, right?
So, the only direct option would be Kuriles. Well, is there ANY island there, which can base B29s? But with depleted P-47, and HELLCAT strength it will be tough.
The other, longer option, will be Midway-Wake-Marcus-...and Iwo Jimas? Those islands are too small to defend against counterattack.

Intel reports 45 units at Port Hedland so not overly convinced Andy is short on anything.

Most of this are probably cadres from Waingapoe. Cutting western railroad, and conquering Perth, while blocking sea escape routes seems tempting. That of course depends of how much ships Allies have at Perth. There is too much bases on coast, to defend them all against landing. And most of forces are in Northern Australia anyway.

Those TFs bombarded last turn BJ, I kept them around, divided into a new TF and sent them back to deliver another bombardment before going home and before our ground assault going in.

Bombardment alway uses most ammunition. There are mostly only 2 units left, after. So another bombardment run will not achieve much.

Guess he's still running some auto convoys...ok as long as escorts are provided.
But in all the lack of carriers in the Central Pacific is quite threatening while Japan holds Line Islands and in rela life this would have
forces the Allied hand. No way all ships aflot could have been moved to the Indian Ocean.

A few mistakes and luck suddenly abandones you altogether.

Was down sick yesterday, played a turn on my laptop...had the previous patch for AE so had to redo it today.
Talk about difference, on the laptop Waingapoe fell but here we got a very poor modifier [8|]

Seems like lots of vented rage these turns; Allied LBA goes bananas attacking everything.
We've not seen 4Es used against frontline LCU earlier as this would have hit friendly troops in trenches 100 yards away just as badly.
- But this turn they did hit Waingapoe increasing disruption and fatigue levels.

We had lots of fighters around but even last generation interceptors struggle to make an impact.
Some 8-9 4Es were still shot down together with dozens of Catalinas and other transport ac.

What is interesting is that on the "laptop" turn we lost 32 of our own fighters while twice as many 4Es were shot down.
Only 20000 enemy troops were destroyed in the laptop run, 2200 squads of inf, 500 of engineers, 700 guns and 960 vehicles.

Will post some screens regarding Burma theatre next; lots of air strikes as mentioned but no signs of a ground threat.

Burma

Think there's a 50/50% chance for a renewed battle in Burma; if so happens it will be just as much a diversion and way to stretch Jap resources as anything else.
Both me and Andy knows how difficult it is to achieve a decisive breakthrough in this area.

I'm more concerned about an attack on Port Blair and Sumatra but that would require another major amph operations supported by a carrier force Andy no longer has available.

The number of Franks in the pool is also increasing; will hold them back until they can be deployed in number (200+).
What's your experience with the Frank; is it best used as CAP interceptor or for sweeps?
- As I see it all fighters suck in the escort role...

I don´t want to take my PBEM as standard as other people might have experienced it completely different, but so far everything on the offense was shot down over my bases at insane kill rates (from late 43 on), no real matter if Zeke, Oscar, George or Frank because unlike Andy´s my bases got plenty of radar and this usually leads to looooong dive sessions of my Cap. Otherwise, the Frank is not bad IMO, better say, it´s the best you can have for the IJAAF. But that´s just my impression and I´m the Allied player.

The 3 service rating doesn´t really impact it either IMO, as long as you´ve got radar. With radar, your fighters will scramble anyway so you can keep the Cap level low and have all fighters well maintained. That´s what I´m doing with the first version of the Corsair (service 3) too and it doesn´t seem to be different for my enemy and the Frank.

In regards to your ground combat operations @ Waingapoe - do you ever divide your divisions? I read somewhere that dividing/recombining divisions helped the units move up/down the stack. I think the intent in dividing was to "rest" a division that had a lot of disruption/damage? Do you ever set any units on Reserve mode?

You also have two engineer regiments - do you always leave both on combat or do you rest one every now and then?

Do you have an HQ unit within range to give your units a combat bonus?

How is your supplies for your ground units? More supplies = less disruption - yes?

That's true CT; I think the escort penalty is too strong - more weight should be given to ac and pilot stats than mission type.
A good sqd commander can position his men so they will be able to bounce interceptors after they have commenced their run against the bombers.
- Attackers were very vulnerable then.

Large LCUs take far lesser casualties when fighting opposing large LCU's.
- Attached a screenshot of an inf regiment from another game that took part in the battle for Suva; we had 3 times more troops than the enemy but small sized LCUs still suffered badly.
In a way it can be good to have a few smaller LCUs as this will keep your main combat formations intact longer.

If I want to rest my troops at Waingapoe I will stand everything down for 2-3 days.
Now I know that the enemy is much worse of than us and with Andy's flying evac circus going on the fight will continue.
- I have 2 Corps HQs and one Area HQ in range and plenty of supplies (60k at Memboro that supplies Waingapoe troops).

I started my "Matrix" wargaming career by reading AARs; only played the AI for a few turns before going pbem much thanx to that [:)]
