Stalker Girl is a Porlock. Her bio family is from Chicago but she was raised by mountain folk from the Missouri Ozarks. I am pretty sure she wouldn't know who the "Man from Porlock" is either.

Her bio grandfather actually spent a week in jail for baiting deer into his backyard, turning on the floodlights at night, then, while they were standing there frozen in terror, he shot one from his porch in his pajamas. Unfortunately, Fish and Game were waiting for him [:D]*

Until recently anyway, plus other, er, exotic night life:

Bugis, in the city-state of Singapore, was renowned internationally from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly gathering of transwomen, a phenomenon which made it one of Singapore's top tourist destinations during that period.

In the mid-1980s, Bugis Street underwent major urban redevelopment into a retail complex of modern shopping malls, restaurants and nightspots mixed with regulated back-alley roadside vendors. Underground digging to construct the Bugis MRT station prior to that also caused the upheaval and termination of nightly transgender sex bazaar culture, marking the end of a colourful and unique era in Singapore's history.

Today, the original Bugis Street is now a cobblestoned, relatively wide avenue sandwiched between the buildings of the Bugis Junction shopping complex. On the other hand, the lane presently touted as "Bugis Street" by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board is actually developed from New Bugis Street, and is billed as "the largest street-shopping location in Singapore". An attempt by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board to bring back the former glamor was unsuccessful.

One of the "hallowed traditions" bestowed upon the area by sojourning sailors (usually from Britain, Australia and New Zealand), was the ritualistic "Dance Of The Flaming Arseholes" on top of the infamous toilet's roof. Compatriots on the ground would chant the signature "Haul 'em down you Zulu Warrior" song whilst the matelots performed their act.

I've just joined your chat board because Google Alerts sent me word of your mention of General (later Field Marshal) Blamey's alleged comment on coffee machines.
This made me laugh. But then there is a slim chance of this having a sliver of truth... because of what I know of Tom Blamey. He was a famed bon vivant and had a love of exotic foods. He did become very fond of strong coffee (according to one of his ADCs) while in Palestine, Cairo, Alexandria as CIC Australian 6th Div. Knowing of Tom as I do he would have had all the coffee machines removed... to his HQ... for his own indulgence.

My production company is making a feature film about the life of Sir Thomas Blamey and if anyone on this board has any good, or bad, info about Australia's only Field Marshal then we'd be most appreciative if you got in contact with us. You can see our film's web site at: www.OurTom.id.au. I'm just about to start on our final version of the script before we send it off to the executive producers. Any info would be welcomed. To those that knew of him he was most controversial and, oddly, widely disliked by his troops and especially Douglas MacArthur (while he was cowering in Australia)and most of all the press.
