Hmmmm still thinking...

I hate to admit this but if you asked what do I actually WANT to do I would want to send 3,000 AV to India to reconquer it just because thats what I want to do...not becuase its what I should do in game !!!

I am veering towards a mixture.

Plan C the more limited southernb strategy with 5 or 6,000 AV keep 5 or 6,000 in reserve and send the 1,000 ish to reinforce the Australian Army in India i.e. sending the Army reserve (i.e. NZ Cavalry and the Aus Indpdt Bdes about 2 reinforced Divs worth) to India to try and retake Karachi...

But I am still mulling

Andy

Mulling is good.

Like many others I assume, I'm very interested to see an all-out HI invasion between two very good, prepared players. But it depends on your POV, whether this is a game, or a simulation of history.

In RL, India would have been in allied hands. In RL, there was no hard-coded end-of-war date. In RL, the Allies would have had a lot more pilots and troops in the hopper.

In the game, if you go to India you probably get vps and a better, more probable game score outcome. But which would be more fun?

I've read your AARs and you are an excellent player, far better than me. But you sometimes talk yourself out of the best move. Picture how you'll feel with a half-done HI invasion, Karachi in your hands, time running out, and no way to finish the job in Japan. I think you'd rather throw the dice. Listen to that inner voice, Grasshopper.[:)]

The goal of the game is not to conquer the Home Islands but to defeat Japan. Any invasion of Japan will fail if the Allies don't have air superiority. Invading Japan now would only lead to a major deafeat. Otherwise you're correct, India is a sideshow. But reinforcing it with some Aussie brigades could work wonders here (and the occupation of Madras should give Andy some RAF Squadrons back that should massively strenthen his airpower here).

I agree with K and Nemo.  I would say however that taking any base in Japan is quite an accomplishment considering the point at which you took this game over.  Victories measured in VP points of the game to me seem somewhat meaningless considering the history of this particular matchup.  Sure, in real life the British and perhaps the Aussies would have tried to retake India, etc.  Yet, in real life I doubt India could have been taken by Japan in the first place.  The Americans, they would surely have not been diverted to India and would focused on defeating Japan - at Japan - either by strategic bombing, cutting it off by sea, and/or ultimately an Operation Downfall like invasion.

From what Nemo said - if your going to go somewhere, go all out.  You have 15,000 AV - land it all in Shikoku, as much as possible in the first wave.  If your going to commit to invade, your best chance to quickly take a base is probably Shikoku and your best method for taking it is to get as many troops as possible ashore quickly and seize the airfield.  At that point, the ball game changes as to what is possible and not possible in Japan.  Bring as many tons of supplies as you can in your first wave to get the assault troops at 2x supplies and attack and have your P47s ready to stage in.

As far as a reserve goes, in general a very sound concept, but, in this case, Shikoku island is difficult for PzB to reinforce and there is no going back once you land at this point in the game.

Just my two cents, enjoying this game a lot.

Thanks guys well I think its fair to say I am enjoying it as well......All the advice is welcome...I want to go for it but I just dont think its doable that railroad is just to fast to recover forces even if I cut im off....

I hear the defeat in detail point.

OK I have thought on it some more the objective is to defeat Japan Isheak alone will help but is not enough.

I am going to divert a few more forces to India to see what is achievable because Madras fell today and my Armour pursued so I can wreck the Madras Army hopefully tomorrow (one pursuit is all I get because of Bangalore but it will help.)

In total about 500 AV is going to India mostly NZ and Aus Militia cavalry .

An early invasion of Shikoku is I think the way I am going to go its the clear terrain and lack of a rail link that convinces me.

I will however take most of the Army and try to hit it early. That way I have time for forces to recover and go on.

So everything I can assault load will go in.

I will prioritise US Forces my logic is if I take it with the first wave THEN and only then I may divert 1st Aus Corps to India (4 Crack Aus and 1 NZ Divs).

Until I have the base on Shikoku no forces beyond the militia cavy go to India IF and only if I get the air base will I divert the main force of ANZAC troops.

My number 1 objective is to get the airbase on Japan.

OK today Madras fell which is a great news.

Yup slept on it decision made.

3 stage plan.

1. A small reinforcement advance guard will be spent to India consisting of NZ and Aus Militia Cavalry.
2. A major invasion by 3 Armies with as many assault loaded troops as I can bring in the south (probably about 10,000 AV including about 1,500 Armour AV) - A landing by a Corps on the other base to keep my target base isolated - this operation to be mounted quickly as possible.
3. Assuming this operation is successfull a reinforced 1st Aus Corps will either be used to follow up on 2. or more likely to ensure the re conquest of India.

Thats it set in stone now just need to work out the logistics and strength estimates.

As its clear terrain I am going to be more picky and leave my cripples out of the fight.

I changed all my prep last night the lead reinforced Corps is above 10% now the rest at 0% I will need to wait at least some time for prep levels to rise.

I have so many HQ's that prep levels rise quickly typically 2% per day so it wont take too long allowing 10 days for transit I can begin loading inside of two weeks.

All of the heavily damaged ships at the PI are being sent to Singapore as I am not going to use them at the front.

I wouldnt have time to sedn them to the West Coast anyway but a lvl 9 port with a small repair yard will do a fair amount even if they knock 5 - 10 sys off before I need to commit again that works.

I think the goal of the game is to have fun. I guess opinions differ here.

The end-of-game pyrotechnics resemble my bank statement; VPs are over-rated. Go for the fun!

I am going to reopen Karachi and reconquer India without diverting too much strength to do it because for me that would be fun...

But I will also invade the HI because I am a masochist !!!!

PZB is away for the weekend so no turns until Monday.....

I will therefore spend some time constructing more cunning plans with which to take back both India and conquer the HI.

I am now more convinced of the need to form some real solid groups of Armies and plan operations accordingly...

Accordingly I have 5 on map Armies and 1 off map at present.

1st Aus Army attacking India
14th British Army (off map awaiting redeployment)

1st US Army (prepping for Plan C)
10th US Army (prepping for Plan C)

6th US Army (Prepping for HI exploitation attacks)
8th US Army (Prepping for HI exploitation attacks)

How I allocate my currently available fighting Corps between the 5 active armies is important.

While invading the Home Islands has a nice feel to it, keep in mind that in eral-life the Allies won without invading the Home Islands. If you can get a Japanese surrender (which is what I assume a "victory" for the Allies can be interpreted as), then pile onto India and China. He boldly took India and I think that if you had more than 5 months of time on the clock, you'd clear out India and tighten the noose on the HI. There's no real reason to adjust that strategy unless something else will get you more VPs in a safer way. As I see it, India gets you VPs, is easier, and is what you'd do if you had more time. So why make such an effort on the HI? If PzB thinks you're coming for the HI, then you really should go for India/Burma and China. You've wasted enough precious material going after places he knew you were coming for. Let him build up air forces and station troops in the HI. Those are guys you don't have to fight in India, China and Burma. And if he tries to ship them to the mainland, your subs and LBA can sink his puny transports.

Signs that PZB is evaccing Bangalore so the Light Horse are going in the Shermans of Cav have been in spearhead for the last few days and they are continuing the tradition.

The LH Regts will hopefully take another base.

(If not they recover quickly)

The rest of the forces are following on as quickly....

I want to keep up the pressure and try and drive him back as fast as I can....

can you shift a few hundred 4E bombers to India now and reduce his defences to rubble -- or do you not have the ability to move enough supplies to sustain that sort of operation?

Not really I neeed to be carefull....

OK it has begun....

TF's have commenced loading for the invasion accordingly I am moving to a more offensive stance in the PI - I have been defensive a little to long.

As the TF's are loaded they will assemble off Bataan ready for onward movement. A lot of aircraft have been turned back ON in the PI so A26's and PB4Y's - over the course of the next few days the B29's will arrive back from the West Cost to get ready....

Its on guys and its time to pay the piper !!!

On another note in the West I am picking up a gener\l retreat to the North and I have a little speculative opporunity.

I have 4 Parachute Bdes in theatre.

503rd
511th
187th
188th

The 503rd is down about the equivalent of a Bn as is the 187th.

I have therefore tasked the 511th with a risky but bold parachute assault on Lucknow. I think PZB has the square root ofknack all in the base if so then that would cut the expressway to the north.

I strongly considered hitting Benares as well with another Bde but decided not to get greedy.

Lets see what happens !!!!
