I'm actually glad I didn't send in 1,000 strikes planes and escorts for that turn. The DS had a 1,400 fighter CAP up and was positioned exactly where my sweeps were headed, so I was able to pick off another 100+ USN fighters for about 1:1 against my several sweeping groups. I lost a good number of LR CAP that got swept up in the mix, but that's okay as they were mostly Ki-100 and A6M with mediocre pilots.

I'll still have a go at getting another 1.5k AV troops to Kushiro overland, but I think the combination of Allied landings, aerial bombardments and shore bombardments will make Kushiro tough to hold against this much force. This is the downside of a game without SL.

As my troops will have to cross a clear hex to get to Kushiro I will plan for a massive LR CAP to combat the huge strike that will surely happen there. He bombed Bihoro with about 400 2E and 4E today, and it did some moderate damage, but even the B-29s are involved. I like that he's using B-29s in this way.

One note. I see F4-F-4 were part of the DS CAP!! That's a throwback! Seems a pretty good indicator that the Hellcats aren't as plentiful as they once were.

Depending on how much FOW is present for the ops losses, it's possible up to 150 fighters have been shaved off of the DS CAP. I'd think he'd be around one more day, but I'm hoping the sweeps scared him off and the remains of support and other big devices (if any are left) will be carried away to be brought back later. Any delay at all is a plus.

My troops moved an expected 10/46 yesterday toward the clear between Bihoro and Kushiro. I'll keep going until it's clear the this is pointless and the Allied machine will take the base. [;)]

Responses for tomorrow will again be measured in the air, but will have some bite if the Allies allow the same kind of exploitation of sweeping hexes.

Big turn! The Allies must have landed in very good shape in spite of all of the CD guns. They try an SA on day 2 here!! [X(]

I'm stunned by what can happen in a non-SL game with this kind of firepower landing at once in a single hex and being all ready to go the next day. Luckily, the base holds for a 1:2 but forts drop to 6 and the Japanese losses are heavier than I'd like. I'll no longer speculate on what happened to Allied troops and just assume they're fine and will attack again tomorrow!

So, the flights in will continue, but that's only 100-150AV since the fields are shot. I'll keep moving reinforcements toward the base. One tank unit made it into the clear and will hold the hex before being carpet bombed into vapour tomorrow.

This is what hit Bihoro and Kushiro today! One thing I'm very happy about is the continued use of B-29s in these missions. I'd like to get a good hit on them here, but it's probably not going to happen. Other priorities tomorrow.

The guys who designed DBB are a bit more knowledgeable than I am. I think they're goal is to make the game fit more realistic parameters. I would imagine 150k troops could possibly land in this area, but they couldn't easily join and fight as a unified force for many days (over as you say, a 46 mile hex, in this case with jagged hills, tidal river estuaries and steep coastal cliffs.

I'm playing this game through because I want to see where it gets after a day 2 debacle with the KB, but I wouldn't chose to start a new game without stacking limits because I've seen the mess it makes of the land combat model with stacks of 500k + troops in Burma and things like this sort of landing that make the game so much less about a player strategically and tactically outthinking another player.

Nothing taken away from Dan mind you, he is VERY good at maximising his force allocation. The best I've played so far. He doesn't let the pressure up for a second and that is a fun challenge.

But I get the point of penalization in logistics, coordination, terrain, high density;

More of the same on the 10th. Allied bombing of Bihoro and Kushiro and continued landings at non-base hexes. I set a massive air strike against the Allied fleet if it stayed in range for a third day. It didn't. I managed a few sporadic strikes on one TF landing more troops in the clear to the West of Kushiro, and didn't get a shot a any CVs. The KB sortied and moved to near Sendai, and I'll continue up to move through to the North of Honshu now.

The tanks in the clear are crushed by air strikes between Bohoro and Kushiro, but I knew that would happen. I had hoped to use the turn to hit something while Allied forces were interested there. No go.

The Allies try a limited armor only DA at Kushiro which does more harm to them than us this time, luckily.
