1 Jul 44 report

Post by jdsrae »

Japan has entered the Jet Age!
NE Turbojet production has started, but it will still be a long time until they are airborne with weapons attached.

This shows the remaining aircraft research, with all engines that are needed now in production.
Bad news for Kayaba Argus fans, none of them will be built.

Here is the VP worm for 1 Jul 44.
The Allies outscored Japan over the last month by about 700 to 300ish.
The main culprits seem to have been Allied subs scoring about a ship a day, heavy bombers destroying IJA aircraft on the ground, and P47s on high sweeps before I tried low layered CAP tactics.
IJ stocks now have a SELL rating.

Allied moves could happen anywhere, but are assessed as most likely on the flanks.
Overland from India towards China, and via amphib landings in the Kuriles and the Port Blair / Sabang area.

40s Divs will start be withdrawn from advanced positions in PNG and the Solomons to bases along the North Coast.
From there, some would be easier to pick up and move to counter the main Allied effort once it reveals itself.
Those moves will shrink the main defensive perimeter to the orange line.
I’ll probably hold the Combined Fleet in reserve until the Allies move towards the red line, so if a move does come in the North KB might need to fight once more before A7M2s arrive (about 6 weeks away).

The Canadian Pacific Coast hasn’t seen much action in this war, but there were 2 SigInt pings at 203,41 near Prince George today.
Prince Rupert is a size 9 port, so it might be the assembly area for NORPAC operations.
I might send a few long range subs into the Gulf of Alaska to see what they can see.

This is why I set long range search beyond 12 hexes.
Emilys at Port Blair spotted and reported a hit on this CL/DD task force.
They are flying out to max normal radius which is 24 hexes, and made contact at range 21.
If the task force moves East it will soon be in range of Sabang based Bettys who are also on search duty.
Something tells me there are more Allied task forces out there, just not spotted yet…

Introducing Randy, with the 57mm accuracy of 8 cannon!
3rd Sentai was flying Sallys and training new MB pilots in ground bombing until today.
As 3rd Sentai has the Randy-B as a planned upgrade it can change to FB for free once it arrives.
MB pilots were transferred to the pool to keep them as MB pilots, then the first Randy was used to change to a FB unit.
It will stay at Nagoya but will now train Strafe as the second skill for Fighter and Fighter Bomber pilots.
It was then upgraded to Nick-C so that the Randys can be used to change over other MB units.

It looks like 75th Sentai is the only other one. It is currently flying Peggys on ASW patrols out of Bangkok.
After 75th Sentai converts the Randy will start to be issued to frontline FB (auxiliary NF) units in Burma.
75th Sentai will convert tomorrow, as Randy-B is already building at 37/month on the way to 120/month.

I will need to find a replacement MB unit to run the GrdB courses now.
208th Sentai is flying Sallys at Changchun, so that might do it.
Most other MB units are training at the moment, ASW as second skill then LowN as third skill.
There are only a few MB units flying ASW patrols over Allied sub hot spots.

20th/B Division takes replacements from Rangoon
20th/C Division takes replacements from Rangoon
51st Ind.Mixed Brigade takes replacements from Samarinda
Unit '20th' changes name to '34th' – this was 20th Army, now 34th Army at Kalemyo. It will eventually make its way back through China to Manchukuo.
APD T-5 arrives at Hiroshima/Kure
ML G-321 arrives at Hiroshima/Kure
84th Division arrives at Okayama – arrives attached to Central Army. I’ve done some google research on historical defensive positions to help plan the construction of the “Pacific Wall”. 84th Div is subordinate to 53rd Army in some references. I will send it to Shimizu and place it under command 54th Army on paper. Shimizu will be part of 13th Area Army’s defensive area centred on Nagoya, covering only 4 hexes from Tsu-Nagoya-Hamamatsu-Shimizu. Shimizu is on the border of 53rd Army, so it will end up close to where it was actually deployed.
53rd Medium Field Artillery Regiment arrives at Maebashi – to 53rd Army at Yokohama, despite being a Central Army unit.
54th Medium Field Artillery Regiment arrives at Maebashi – to 54th Army at Hamamatsu, despite being a Western Army unit.
3rd Guards Division arrives at Tokyo – will stay and guard the capital, but be prepared to move to counter any Allied invasion of Honshu. Historically it seems to have been sent forward to 52nd Army around Chiba.
11th Medium Field Artillery Regiment arrives at Tokyo – will stay in theatre reserve at Tokyo
13th Medium Field Artillery Regiment arrives at Maebashi – theatre reserve at Tokyo

S-804 Hikotai converting to J1N1-Sa Irving – S-801 is about to withdraw from SEAF, so S-804 will move down there to replace them. While the Allied heavies have been absent from SEAF for the last few months, that might not continue.
3rd Guards Division - some devices have been upgraded at Tokyo – 47mm AT guns
1st Tank/B Division - some devices have been upgraded at Rangoon – Type 3 Medium Tanks! Now to spend a few of the 117k vehicle points in the pool to replace combat losses. A few big supply task forces have recently arrived at Rangoon with regular service of the SSasRan convoys from Sasebo still bringing more. The Allies might start to interrupt supply flow to Rangoon soon, so every point that lands feels like a bonus from now on.

NEAF doesn’t have many fleet subs left, but I-6 up was just ordered to move towards the Aleutians through the wide open ocean between Midway and Amchitka to act as a picket ship, in case the Allies try to move through this gap towards the Kuriles.
It looks like the Allies have more xAK picket ships of their own in this area.
Perhaps a sweep through here by a CV Division would claim another few xAK, but I am not sure it is worth the risk if USN CVs are lurking within sprint distance.

RE: 5 Jul 44 report

Post by jdsrae »

I haven’t oversized the active CV air groups so far in this game, but I’ve just checked and CV capacity can be up to 115% without halting air ops.
In preparation for the next big CV battle it looks like I can add another 9 plane Chutai to most CVs, but only 2x3 plane Shotai to Junyo and Hiyo to avoid going over 115%.

For the CVs still building, Unryu and Amagi will arrive in August, with all to arrive before the end of 1944.
A lot of the CVs also have 45 day 8/44 upgrades, so by the time they emerge with more AA guns there will be A7M2 Sams available for some units.
CPO Sakai as the top scoring ace will mean that Soryu-1 will be issued them first.

Even Shinano, which I know many players choose not to build, can have a “full” size 36 plane fighter unit on board, which is better than nothing.
I also expect that she will be a bomb and torpedo magnet, which might give some of the balsa wood and tin foil carriers a slightly better chance of surviving the next battle.
The Unryus can all fit 45 fighters each if the starting combination of 18x DB and 9x TB is kept.
The only real issue of over-stacking the CVs to just under 115% seems to be if one of them gets sunk, but if the CVs stay within range of a land airfield that is a non-issue.

For the CVLs, I had previously sent the TB units ashore, resized them to 27 each to use for training TB pilots, and resized the fighter units to 100% capacity.
This shows the calculation of what each CVL unit can be while staying just under 115% as well.
Due to the smaller total capacity of the CVLs and CVEs it isn’t a significant boost, but still gives a total of +29 fighters, or close to an extra CVL.

I’ve got more than enough A6M8s, and have enough 70s experience pilots to fill them out, just not quite enough of the 81+ experience which is my preference for CV pilots.
Still, this will provide a significant boost to CAP numbers over the fleet.

Akagi, Unyo and Chuyo are shown in red as they are submerged.

Palau seems to have been the capital of Nanyo Cho it was intended to move to Babeldoab instead, but Saipan is more important defensive terrain so it will move there to help defend the Marianas.

Interesting Chart on the air capacity......you have very few losses, so getting the A7M can give you a credible threat

On SHINANO, I never build her, not because it's not a useful ship, but because the cost doesn't really equal the gain IMO. I usually accelerate TAIHO and most of the UNRYUs to pull them into 1943, and once you do that there just is not enough NSY to go around. That means SHINANO and a bunch of Subs can't get built.

In this one though it looks like you did NOT accelerate CVs as aggressively, so you've been able to continue building SHINANO the whole time. At this point you may as well finish. She is impressively tough, so there's that.....

Shinano has been building from the start, mostly for role playing reasons.
I did consider the approach most take in accelerating the Unryus, but for my first pbem I wanted to build all CVs.

I am curious to see if I can keep her afloat for more than a few weeks!

I did halt some SS and two classes of SST to accelerate all Unryus into 1944, but all CVs are now on normal build and most SS are also back on.
1x class of the smaller RO subs and 2x smaller classes of SST are still off, but I will switch them back on to use up the NSY points as the CVs commission.

Allied ASW is devastating now but I don’t want to make it any easier for them than it needs to be.
The above hit an a decent AK should make the Allies keep their escorts up in rear areas, diluting that power a little bit away from the front.
