The Allies come back strong and my high CAP suffers on the 16th. Layering doesn't work without the radar in hex. Even small Allied sweeps have their way. This is reminiscent of my game with Jocke. I won't set things up like this again.

Japanese troops continue to take a pounding. I'm not worried about the troops thought. The majority should make it back okay. It's the subsequent healing when I'll all need to hold back the hordes now unleashed on Hokkaido. Or maybe the Allies will jump again. Who knows?

He's started raiding at Hakodate with small DD TFs. It's not going to be easy to ship things around here anymore, but it is Feb 45, so I guess that's expected.

The Allies got 2:1 with their sweeps today and hit the troops with massive force. The good doesn't last long in 45 for Japan.

I can try that but I've always had one unit then revert to combat and take all of the damage. That's happening right now with troops walking in the clear and getting smashed by 4Es. One switches t combat each turn.

Now you see why I simply refuse to send Japanese units in a clear non-hex hex under any circumstance. It's absolute murder in the late war, and there's very little to do about it.

The cover provided by x2 and x3 terrain doesn't make it much better, but it's a massive casualty reduction and it costs nothing.

Being in Reserve doesn't protect you from aerial bombing.

It might protect from land bombardment, and from being triggered from amphibious unloading.

Thanks for your concern. I do think he's landing with that intention, since it's only small fractions of units by APD and it's every turn. That said I don't want an HR on the practice, since it's a valid action by the player.

There are a lot of things we can do in game and some things we just can't do, like para-drops in non-base hexes and setting waypoints effectively for bombardment TFs. I understand the game has limitations and is also outside it's support window. We had a lot for many years from michaelm which was amazing, and he was so quick and responsive to valid requests. [&o][&o]

now we will live with these difficulties. I'll chalk it up to rocket launching Corsairs (also not in game) and move on.

There are things though that are player activated holes in the game parameters that I think can be HRed. Only small things, but I'll bring one up soon. Some things bring up areas the player can't control that IMHO should be limited as they're not integral to player usage of their forces and can be seen as an intended use of game mechanics to gain an edge that can't be countered effectively by the other side.

Now you see why I simply refuse to send Japanese units in a clear non-hex hex under any circumstance. It's absolute murder in the late war, and there's very little to do about it.

The cover provided by x2 and x3 terrain doesn't make it much better, but it's a massive casualty reduction and it costs nothing.

I'd be completely happy with having two divisions crushed as long as I could hit the B-29s. My frustration is that I can't get to the bombers. In this case he also is limiting further action by "troop hunting." In about 9 months since landing at Shikuka, there have only been less than 4k strat points destroyed.

If the 4E are hitting troops they're not hitting airframe factories. If the fighters are dying in sweeps over troop hexes they're not clearing skies over Tokyo, and those lost pilots are lost, those lost airframes are lost.

The numbers are piling up. This is a rumble in the jungle strategy. Take the hits for as long as I can, then punch back after the opponent has weakened themself considerebly. [;)]

On the 17th the air battles even out again. About 60 fighters lost for each side, and the CAP just barely stays long enough to hit a few bombers. Just.

But not long enough to do anything meaningful. Troops still get pounded.

The Allies move a small unit to Bihoro. I'll remove it in the next turn or two if I see nothing else is coming.

What is your percentage settings for LRCAP? I had an extended conversation with PzB about this issue, in his AAR against Andy, and we concluded, that you have to set percentage low, if you are expecting to meet several sweeps, followed by bombers. It seems, that Air Unit will send more planes, as turn goes by, when they gradually meet opposition.

I think that was over friendly base, with Radars, but worth a try. Especially, since NICKs shouldn't tangle with enemy fighters anyway.

Here come the kamis!!

Kushiro falls after a massively destructive auto-bombardment and subsequent Allied shock attack. The base would have fallen this turn regardless. Now it'll be whittling the remainder down as i try to extricate my troops from the clear, get a few more chances to aim at the sweeps and strikes, then see what comes next. I've already gotten some pieces out of Kushiro so nothing needs to be bought back, and those will go to rear areas to fill out again. Lost the experience level of a good 70exp division but not much else of note.

I'm interested to now look for opportunities to get kamis into the strike mix and aim for the Allied fleets. I haven't tried to hit anything with massed LBA since the fights over Shikuka.

My troops are still retiring toward Kushiro and should begin to make it into base tomorrow. Some will straggle for a day or two after, but I think I won't lose any units outright, which is a surprise. Bihoro is clear, but forts 8. I think I can hold there for a bit, long enough to get the wrecked troops to the rear and bring some fresh up into the x3 hex nearby.

The Allies are sending in some DD raiders in the North and South currently. I'm a bit worried about him sending single ship DD forces to raid. I have had one or two hit Hakodate and completely avoid any detection or strikes though a lot of naval search is operating and some low flying TBs are on naval attack restricted to Japanese held areas. In the South some TBs did fly to hit the paired DDs raiding around the top of New Guinea. I have increased search around here and all approaches to the important oil fields and fuel transit routes are covered extensively, but single ships are virtually undetectable.

Should I contact Dan and ask about this, since I don't want to get into a hard situation if he does send single ships deep?

I find this one area where the game mechanics restrict a player from making an impact against the tactics of the other, even with the knowledge or expectation it might happen and with a lot of experience on how one should combat it (extra search, high and low, low naval strikes, high density search around choke points etc).

Earlier in this game I did question Torsten about bringing in supply to the PI with single ship TFs. He brought them from OZ to Manila while the entire DEI was in Japanese control and extensive search and strike missions were being flown along the approach paths. I didn't see them until they began unloading at Manila and recon saw them in hex. He agreed this tactic wasn't fair after hearing about my inability to stop it or even see them en route though I knew it was happening.

What is your percentage settings for LRCAP? I had an extended conversation with PzB about this issue, in his AAR against Andy, and we concluded, that you have to set percentage low, if you are expecting to meet several sweeps, followed by bombers. It seems, that Air Unit will send more planes, as turn goes by, when they gradually meet opposition.

I think that was over friendly base, with Radars, but worth a try. Especially, since NICKs shouldn't tangle with enemy fighters anyway.

I've tried various settings, with a standard of 70% CAP and 30% rest. I've found that fewer show up to meet sweeps, thus making sweeps more effective, if used in this hex (without radar). Massed CAP suffers more to sweeps in losses, and still doesn't last thought the entire phase. There is a sweet spot somewhere.

I've tried as low as 50% CAP no rest (to allow the AI to scramble the rest for larger strikes, like the following 4Es) but without radar it seems the scrambling doesn't happen.

I likely have another few turns to try things here so I can play with an even lower setting of CAP%. I feel like they won't send more though if there is no early detection fro radar.

In the next turn I tried Lowpe's idea of having Irving S-A on low CAP to add radar, but it didn't work well. What I got was all groups scrambling everything, then getting caught out by sweeps and losing masses of fighters.

Single ship raiders larger than DD are ok, but really given the Allied naval strength why would they do it? Late war Japan is often forced into using single ship task forces because that is all that is left![;)]

Countering Fletchers is one of the greatest concerns Japan has.

Sorry to dive into minutiae, but what are your pools of these antiquated airframes like now? I assume you're 'using them up' because you have them in abundance, rather than ongoing production.

Also, no Ki-84a in the lineup. I know you've used quite a few of these airframes in the last few months. Is everything just going into -r and -b production?

. Kushiro troops take another hit form the landing auto-bombardments. Dan and I had a talk about this as apparently he's been getting a lot of flak in the AAR about it.

I won't lie. It's frustrating. It's not that he's doing something wrong though, it's that the game has a limitation that restricts me from making a choice here. These are the parts of game I have trouble with the the only areas I would now consider making AARs about. With this issue I don't know how it could be regulated though. You can't say don't send more troops in. He does put ships and troops at risk by doing so as well, but the risk is minimal compared to the gain in this case. It's become a system for him recently, and he's using it well.

It's simple; either Matrix disable this auto bombardment feature, which I can't grasp yet it's reasoning and historical plausibility, or add the choice to select NO AUTO BOMBARDMENT;

meanwhile it could be asked from the opposing player to refrain from landings which have the only clear main purpose to trigger this "autobombardment";

Many forumites regularly post in many threads that coding something is very easy. Whenever an issue comes up, rather than properly analysing the issue they fall back on the on the mantra that the game is wrong. They are always wrong.

Let's for a moment humour this ridiculous suggestion. When would the option of "No Auto Bombardment" be selected. At the scenario settings stage? Good there would never be any defensive bombardment. That includes on atolls. Would also mean no auto shock attack by the attacker on an atoll. So 3 divisions could be landed on a 6k limit atoll and sit there for weeks. The Allies certainly have the logistical ability to maintain this sitzkrieg in 1944/45. So much for trying to adhere to historical parameters.

Then consider the cause of the defensive bombardment. It is born out off the defensive routines which target the approaching disembarking forces. No bombardment, no need for CD units. No ability to inflict disruption on the invaders. No need to embed fire support ships in the amphibious TF to suppress defending fire and draw fire away from thin skinned no combat ships. How close to historical outcomes would that then be. To not mention the howls of protest from players.

Now what if the option is not selected at the start. Assume at the entering orders phase the player determines whether or not auto bombardment is in play. Would this be applied universally to all defensive beach positions or would each separate beach need to be toggled. Yeah more micro management because there simply isn't enough micro management in the game. More CPU cycles, more demand on memory or yeah because no one ever complains about slow turn processing. And what happens if a surprise landing occurs and the player did not have the desired toggle on for that specific location. Or the player forget to change the toggle for that location that turn. Or the player guessed incorrectly what his opponent would do this turn. For as we all know no opponent ever varies his approach, every opponent is always 100% predictable in their actions.

In a previous Lowpe AAR I explained in great detail the operation and dev rationale for the defensive shore fire. There the Allied player was clearly exploiting the game system. Canoerebel is not doing the same thing as that Allied player was doing. It is impossible in any abstraction to reproduce exactly the historical process. What is important is to arrive at outcomes which are consistent with the historical outcomes.

There is no simple coding change for anything in AE.
