Boy I used to dress like that back in the Regan years. Except I had dolphins on. So how was Japan in 97?

I liked Japan... after I got used to driving on the wrong side of the road! Northern Japan is very scenic and it was fun to drive through the countryside. Farming over there is definitely a bit different than what you see here!

We did a lot of cross-decking with the Japanese P-3 squadrons in Hachinoe. We had some great times and more than once I felt the effects of saki.

The bad part was that we flew on more allied subs than we did Russian. Chasing a Japanese diesel in the Sea of Japan is a tad more difficult than playing with Oscars and Akulas in mid-Pacific!

All in all, not a bad place to deploy... certainly better than Keflavik, Iceland or Diego Garcia!

BTW, despite what some of the other cretins on these forums seem to think, the AB map is good.

Can't tell you about the latest Russian subs as I have been out of the business for ten years now. The most modern Soviet/Russian submarines I flew against were Oscars and Akulas and while they were a greater challenge than Victors or Deltas, they were still much easier to find and track than US subs.

Yes, the Russian Pacific Fleet had/has diesels.. Kilos at Vladiostok IIRC.

Actually I really enjoyed the job. It was important, it carried a lot of resposibility and I had a knack for it. To me, it was like going deer hunting every time I flew except that I was hunting man not animals. I'm just thankful that I never had to use my skills in a shooting war.

The closest I thing to war ever experienced was during search and rescue operations for the victims of the Korean Airline flight 007 shot down near Sakhalin Island. It seemed like the entire Soviet airforce was airborne every time we flew and they weren't messing around.

You were there... WOW. i read somewhere that when you splah a sub its not that pleasent sound when it die's... Was it hard to track a Kilo? Polish Navy has one of those we also had number of Foxtrots but those were junk... i really miss that there is no WITP like game set out in the WWIII[:D]

H3 ANW is broken. Don't buy it. 2.5 years after release even the demo doesn't work correctly. H3 is a "shoulda-woulda-coulda" that held much prommise, but has never lived up to its potential, and probably never will.

HCE (Harpoon Commanders Edition) is the route I would reccomend.

I was involved in a "sinkex" in the late 1970's , when they sank the WW2 boat Sealion (the 2nd one). We listed to the sounds both live , and then later recorded (from recorders on the boat). It really did sound like something out of a ww2 sub movie.

I've had trouble with both copies of Harpoon that Matrix published. Niether works well. I bought the Coimmanders Edition on the Matrix hype that it was significantly improved on Harpoon classic 97. Sorry , it's not an improvement, it's a retro-grade. The original works much better. In the new version , the editor doesn't work.

I haven't tried the editor yet, so thanks for the heads up. I do like HCE better than HC 97 because, to me, the AI seems to handle itself better.

Well just checked AI in HC 97 is dumb my Akula class boat sunk Perry Class Frigate a Ticonderoga Class Cruiser and a Nimitz class Carrier:) (it was the mission in NACV)

The only sub I ever heard implode was from a sonobuoy recording of the Soviet Yankee K-219 that sank after suffering a missile explosion near Bermuda. The sound of the implosion on reaching crush depth was far less dramatic than I thought it would be, possibly because several compartments had already flooded. Just a "pop, pop, pop" and that was it.

Any diesel sub is difficult to track submerged on battery. The Kilo is a much more modern design and more stealthy than the Foxtrot or even the Tango. But the main factor is the skipper of the boat. If he knows what he is doing, he can make things difficult. If he doesn't, the quietest submarine in the world won't help him.
