9 Zero sweep Bombay.

26th Indian Division at 34,40 near Madras is bombed – 79 casualties.

Bombay is bombed – this was likely to happen with the way things had been ambling along (read the Japanese player got a bit too complacent). Somewhat surprised that recon and sweep had not picked up these fighters. Todd says that they had been here for a while so perhaps the fact that they are set to training has helped disguise their presence. The fall out is a rethink on how I will go about sieging Bombay.

A change in the air

Post by SierraJuliet »

A little filling in of the current to and fro between Todd and myself. A mere couple of weeks ago Todd was pondering just what to do. He confided that I’d managed to isolate the entire CBI and he expected it to collapse like a house of cards and that once this happened the Soviets would be unable to cope with the increased LCUs that would then be available to the IJA. By extension the USA would face the same dilemma. I, on the other hand, tend to look at the whole Japanese enterprise and think of it as a pack of cards that could easily fold like a pack of cards when I finally do meet up with a determined defensive line. Todd is a gentleman to play against and amid the constant pummelling of his forces he remarked, ‘You have no idea how well you've done to date and even if I recover brilliantly, doubtful, the clock will be against me because I've lost so much.’ It is hard to be fully conversant with just how well I have been doing but I do know that I’ve come up with some good results against his land forces when caught out on transports at sea. Those results in large measure gave me the impetus to push on and open a campaign of conquest in India.

Then a day later Todd throws the following my way… ‘Got it! A masterful plan that will either win or lose the war. If I'm wrong I'm done for, maybe. I think that it's flexible enough to work. We'll see. Even if you don't do what I think you will the plan will put me in a strong position to wage the war. If not, oh well.’ Sounds to me like Todd has signalled the end of Sir Robin in this game and from here on in the Allies will be looking to be more aggressive in their attitude.

Three days ago Todd let me know that ‘with Operation Snafu now in it's active stage planners around the globe wonder if the Japanese are really invincible.’

Today I’m greeted with ‘are your intel weenies digging for info about Operation Snafu. Wouldn`t it be great if the Allies could all attack some point on the map simultaneously. Of course I don`t mean all concentrated on the same point.’

Where am I, then, in light of this new found bravado emanating from my erstwhile foe? I have no doubt that Todd does have a plan. I suspect too that it is probably quite the radical departure from his usual playing style – that being one of taking time and building up overwhelming force before beginning to beat back the tide of Japanese expansion. I have a feeling too that he is making something of a play to get in my head.

I can’t help feeling that something is indeed on the way and my expectation is that the Pacific has to be the place where it will happen. Todd has to know that I’ve got KB split and now is the time to strike. I have Zuikaku, Shokaku and Soryu + Shoho at Rabual and they will be ready to sail in 1 more day. My Pacific islands are not yet in a state where they will be ready to withstand an early assault… assuming that this is the intent of Operation SNAFU. The rest of KB will be transitioning to the Pacific but they will be weeks away as they are still several days out of Singapore and will need dock time. They have done their work in India and Japanese LBA will have to work out how to rule in this theatre from now on.

The fact that I have most of my independent divisions in India also has to help embolden the Allied cause.

So with the close of April ’42 imminent get ready for some Allied counter strokes in May. My plan is to see what unfolds and look towards using my Pacific carriers as counters where they can do so without getting hit from the hammer of what will undoubtedly be the full combined weight of the USN.

I have been pondering further on the nature of Operation SNAFU. I'm now leaning toward it being an operation where Todd is looking to set up a forward base without encountering any interdiction from Japan. I'm inclined to think that the Pago Pago/Suva area is a likely candidate for such a beginning.

First up the gains in India. I've not done China this time as nothing has changed apart from the capture of Pakhoi.

The projected plan in India is the capture of Bombay and the destruction of all units trapped here. It is of course very dependent of what LCUs Todd has stashed here plus the mandatory road blocks on the way into town. I have plenty of divisions in good shape backed up by armour and artillery plus air power as well. I am also considering the capture of a west coast port to support naval affairs on this side of India.

Todd’s new found enthusiasm for the game grows. Today he tells me that SNAFU continues to move forward with my Sons of Nippon unaware as to what they will soon reap. Well that is enough to cause any rising sun commander to be nervous. But to follow that up with …wouldn’t an invasion of Japan be awesome!!! I’m fairly sure that Todd is working on a little psych ops here but of course to discount the possibility of the Allies making a move somewhere on my perimeter would be dangerous.

A tremendous result with all the infrastructure intact bar 1 Heavy Industry and a couple of manpower. The airfield is also in perfect shape. Not so supplies at the base which will take a few days to recover to a reasonable level. Same goes to the LCUs which will need a little time to recover the disablements. Happy with the result and time move things around to work on cracking the defence of the inner Chinese plains.

Seems the Russians have decided to test the water and snoop around Hailar. I forgot to change settings this turn but next turn I’ll change the Nates from training to escort and bring in some Oscar to see if we can’t draw some blood from these illegal visitors. I’ve said nothing to Todd so we shall see how this plays out in a couple of turns.

Pilot Muranaka R. is reported as to have escaped capture.

CV Junyo arrives at Nagasaki/Sasebo.
Kido Butai, although powerful, was a raiding force, and this is exactly how the Japanese understood its usage. 'Shattered Sword'
