An Aussie Affair: Re-Match!
! ! ! ! ! !
Didn't even see them coming!:( I had no idea that Luskan's CVs were that close to the east coast of Aussie till he launched, and by then it was too late to do anything about it !
What the hell is wrong with my LRP aircraft?
And to think that some people on this board have in the past complained about the allies intel:rolleyes:
The P-38s were worn out after the LRCAP missions that they had flown for a bombardment TF to PM....moral down to 42. I was resting them because I could not see any threats.....WRONG!

Raver just pasted Lunga again - blew up 15 planes on the ground (I have over 300 zeroes in the replacement pools so I'm not worried there - the precious pilots are safe) and he knows this - I think that he isn't going to bother with gavigamana or Nevea at all, and go straight for Irau - and soon while the good weather holds (we just have plenty of thunderstorms - about 6 in a row). PM is very secure, as is GG - Lunga would be suicide for any IJN fleet.
No, it will be Irau (you heard it here first) and the troops there are readying their special patented killer-shark to patrol the beaches. The imperial laboratory had much better success with them than the "spy-rat" program, the "Minelaying-Pelican" or the "sentry-crocodile" programs. Work on our top secret teenage mutant ninja turtles continues however.
Engineers have been rotated (most back to Truk) from all bases, and now all bases are either fully stocked, or have had their crews moved to smaller bases because Rabaul and Shortlands etc. are finished. Hopkins, Gasmata, Russell Islands and Dobadura have just begun construction, and also a couple of FT trips to Woodlark have deposited a few supplies there (and are going to return in two turns with some engineers).

Raver is preparing an offensive, and it is my job to guess where.
Problem is there is contrary evidence - his level bombers are at Luganville, bombing Lunga every shot they get. This seems to indicate he wants Irau.
On the other hand, there are 3 BBs (unlikely he has that many just yet, certainly with North Carolina in Pearl etc.) sighted with 2 other TFs of CAs and DDs at Townsville, and APDs sighted at Cooktown (may not mean anything).
Two pieces of contrary evidence - Raver is at a disadvantage in CVs - so I'm doubting that he's going to try and invade in two places at once. Soon as I spot his CVs I know his intentions (because no one bluffs by sending their CVs one way and their invasion fleet the other).
Raver's subs are a menace, sinking a couple of PC boats this turn. Prefer that to shooting at transports I guess.

Allied Subs really rock in this game! I have had more success with them in this PBEM than any other, mainly because I have switched tactics.....never put them in shallows until there have exp of 70+. I would say that my subs have accounted for 15% of Luskan's ship losses.

Never argue with an idiot, he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Gotta say that I am having a terrible time with my PBYs. Luskan seems to be able to sail half of his fleet onto the door step and I never seems to spot them till they launch! He has just informed me that he had his super CV TF parked just off Cairns and not ONE of the three PBY squadrons spotted him! I say again, those of you who have wailed about the IJN TFs being easy to spot should count yourselves as lucky! I dare not poke my head out of port, because I simply do not know what is lurking out there ready to bit it off!
Luskan is right about my CVs.........spotting a CV TF will be a dead give away as to where the invasion is going. I could try and risk one without aircover, but as most of his LRBs are untouched it would be pure murder. Now if only I could sneak my CVs in as Luskan seems able to do then everything would be perfect!

Bloody Raver! I had every fleet asset ready to hammer into him at Townseville - 1 turn and the biggest naval night battle ever would have taken place - he had about 3 BBs, 10 CAs, and hudreds of DDs there and my whole fleet, save those ships at 10 or more sys damage was there.
Then he moved them to Cairns - and put 60 p-38s on CAP the turn before I was going to strike - so I patiently repositioned - started running out of fuel, and then simply decided that with the extra warhawks added in, I couldn't risk my CV planes - not on his turf, when they'd be much more dangerous later on my turf! Without the CVs, I could risk my 3 X 2 BB, 4 CA + 10 or more DD surface combat groups.
I chickened out and pulled back to Shortlands - having been south (almost due south) of GG for 3 turns and not getting spotted once. The bad weather really does work that way.
While all this was going on, that bastard Raver slipped a few APs and a MSW into Nevea and ofloaded a small INF unit and a CD. I swore he was going to bleed to take that place and he got there completely without a fight. If the MSW hadn't had the mine clearing msg I STILL wouldn't know that he skipped Gavigamana for Nevea.
Of course, all my fleet was refueling or a hex out of Rabaul or Shortlands . . . so I sent in the "damaged" ships (all with very high exp - but 8-10 sys damage each). Komatsu launched the long lance attack of all long lance attacks - firing every (yes every last one) torpedo in the TF at the small USN transport TF. Not a single torp left aboard any of these ships. Akikaze hit one of our own mines, but only has 15 sys damage (she started at 8) so she'll be fine.

Heh - I avoid a game loosing mistake and Raver loves it!
Lets face it folks - we only want to risk it when we have a chance of winning. Even if I scored a crushing victory over Raver's fleet - I'd get nothing but damaged ships getting bombed on the way home.

Ok - good bombing raids from Raver - but I'm packing in the AA - building the forts, and am considering bailing my base forces out of PM (Dobadura is great - airfield is so small it doesn't matter how many times Raver wipes it off the face of the planet it will be perfectly rebuilt the next turn.
Of course, it is also safe from the evil bombardment from surface TFs.
Happy for Raver to bomb all he wants - I'll save my ordinance for his ships if he comes out of his hole.

Ok - somehow Raver's planes have managed 7 straight days bombing, without thunderstorms or anything and PM is just rubble.
Fortunately I evacuated the base force earlier and pushed in a bit more AA - slowly his air assault is wavering, but it has surprised me with how strong it was. I've never had a USN opponent last this long against me and as a result I think maybe I should have beaten a little harder on Raver when I had the clear advantage.
Worried I've lost my autovictory opportunity.

Well I have blasted PM back to the stoneage, next on my list is Gili Gili then Buna and maybe after that invasion? Or maybe Irau?
Airpower is THE dominant force in this game. And to bring an even bigger smile to my face, is the fact that Corsairs are about to be introduced....they will make mince-meat of any jap plane that they come up against. At last I will be able to whittle down those pesky Zeros.

Well, Raver continues to poudn PM - only now he is resting his heavies and probably after a big rest they'll move over to try and give Lunga the treatment to buld a base at Irau for his corsairs etc.
However - I did send a bunch of DDs and CLs over to Wupenko and caught a big transport tf there - unfortunately I only got two of them - but did drown 400 of his cavalry troops. However I'm loosing that many support troops at PM a day generally (although the airbase raids don't really beat up on my INF units, they seem to hurt my eng/base force (none of them left there) more. Can't wait until he switches to ground attack (not!).
My surface combat TF decided to refuel on the way back from Wupenko - well within Dauntless range (what is Tanaka thinking???) fortunately his voodoo worked and Raver's shitty spotter pilots didn't spot them. Then next turn, they all run out of fuel and have spent a turn rowing - although there is a replenishment TK (hastily loaded and sent) which should merge with them just shy of Irau - pretty sure Raver's CVs are not a threat anyway, but is annoying. I forgot to put the higher endurance DDs in the TF - as well as a few CAs or CLs with larger fuel stores to act as milch cows.

PT boats DO work!
Well well well....PTs can hit back! On of my PT baots at Wunpuko struck the CA Mikuma with a torp:) . She was damaged to the point of not being able to steam out of range of a few Avenger's who were more than pleased to add another two torps to her hull. Mikuma is now a steel reef

Run Luskan Run!:D

Never argue with an idiot, he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Things are getting a bit ugly in the war so far.
My problems:
1. Tanaka has been hit in the head with some shrapnel or something and is now a raving lunatic. 3 times he's brought his fast surface raiding tf to a halt inside of Raver's AIRACOBRA range for crying out loud. Will be taking him offline for a while as he has done it 3 times in a row . . . it cost me 2 damaged dds.
2. Allied airpower really is very strong. I've never managed the sort of bombing campaign that Raver is displaying - newbies should be watching in awe. The allied bombers turn up in numbers of 150+ maybe 10 times in 14 turns. I didn't haev any ENG units at PM, so once it was rubble - it stayed rubble and has trapped a 10 strong squadron of betties that were my worst squadron (there to get a bit of exp with night raids). Unfortunately they're going to get no flying experience . . . GG has plenty of engineers, and as a result, 50 zeroes in the area have contested every one of Raver's bombing missions - which have stopped the alst 4 turns. Every raid costs him 10 or more bombers (4 b17s a turn three turns in a row among them!) and I think that since I've finally made him loose a few he's pulled back for a while. His consistent airbase bombing doesn't damage my troops at all however, which is good news. Must be the forts and huge amounts of AA.
3. I have too many troops at my front bases - I've only lost 6 transports all game - and I'm still having some supply issues with every transport in the game working ALL the time to keep supplies constant. In other games I've had PM up to 300 000 supply points (and then the allies settled in for a siege!). I haven't hit 100k supplies anywhere except Rabaul and Shortlands so far. Although 6 bases now have 100k or more fuel (have only lost 1 or 2 tankers is why).
4. My surface combatants have sustained considerable system damage from constant operations in all kinds of weather. Their speed has dropped - and no doubt their effectiveness too. So I have instituted a major refit/repair cycle through all of my size 9 ports to try and get them all back to 0 before Raver makes his first offensive move.
5. Referring to my post on my pilot experience - I'm still very confident about it. I just haven't lost enough planes to cost me in that department. The zeroes, level bombers and CV aircraft are always training and always steadily improving their average experience. However the Oscars are stuck at 65 and won't go any higher - even with rest period between training. I may have to use more "brutal" methods of training (send them all to GG and let them meet Raver's bad guys head to head!).
6. Raver's transports seem to react to my fast surface raiders - somehow knowing they are about to hit them although spotter planes don't see my TF (get the message "TF 202 retreating from enemy surface combat TF"). Irritating to say the least.
7. My Minelayers have been in constant service from the moment they have entered the theatre and are now really very worn (all above 20 sys damage). Although I am loathe to take them offline (some jobs are never finished) I am going to have to suspend minelaying operations for a time.

With dancing Bananas and Storm Troopers who needs BBs?

At this point I must admit to being is a very comfortable situation. We are now well into '43.... Feb 16th to be exact.....and I now have enough troops stationed at all major auto Victory bases to deter and silly attemps by Luskan.
The air campaign over PNG goes well, with PM now and forever closed. Gili Gili is my next target, and another few raids will also see that place shut down completely. The north coast of PNG will be the next target and the overall plan of isolating PNG will be complete. I have decided to simply isolate PNG rather than take it as Luskan has a huge amount of troops there, and it is much easier to all the jungle to do my work for me, than risk my troops lives. This also has the effect of allowing me to concentrate on one area rather than two.
And so over the next few weeks the build up in Espiritu Santo will be compete ( the bulk of the troops are in place) and offensive operations can begin. To end on a good note Luskan has decided to end bombardment raids into the Espiritu area, which is good news, as it is most disruptive to have TF run from Bombardment TF before they have finished unloading.
The war goes well.
