a bloody spring in the Pacific
While the big armada is getting close to Truk to be ready for Op. Mouse Trap, the Yankees are trying to build a base at Thursday Island to help supporting Port Moresby. My long range bombers from Rabaul e Lae lae made them pay for this attempt. BTW there are already 30 dakotas and 25 fighters there....

Hi, Poor USS Phoenix. The actual ship survived PH attack and entire war. Was sold to Argintina and sank by RN submarine during the Falkland War. Seems she could not avoid her karma. (just 30 years sooner)
I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!
RE: Turning point in the Pacific
ORIGINAL: Gen.Hoepner
A decisive battle for the dominion of the southern seas has been won!
Not a single Japanese ship has been touched and one entire american carrier task force have been sunk!
Buckmaster, that led the enemy TF from the deck of the yorktown went down with his ships.
Now the hands of Yamamoto are free to launch the operation Mouse Trap for the conquest of Port Moresby!
BANZAI!!!!
now look what have you done[:-], you have to post points situation again[;)].
Congrats, your plan work perfectly, although i'm little bit confused with Tanaka as a leader of CV tf... I will check statistics and make some tests (Tanaka vs Yamaguchi, etc)....
Also, beware to not became overconfident. After this battle you have great advantage and dont let him a "lucky punch". He is under a pressure now, but still dangerous.
Do you plan some tactical/strategic changes after this victory?
Keep the good work!

RE: Turning point in the Pacific
Hi Pauk,
you're right in advising me not to be overconfident: that's a big problem of my personality:-)
Later i'll post the point situation, btw is something like 5500 for allies and 20500 for japan...still far from 4-1
No big changes in my overall strategy. The key point is now PM. It's gonna be damned tough 'cause every day the "Cairns Express"( fast trasports + Dakotas) make the garrison of PM grow. Now already achieved 60,000 men!...BTW my troops are ready at Truk, already embarked . Now i just wait for my carriers to get back at Truk and then we'll begin this new great adventure!
In the meanwhile i'm fortifiying my positions. Wewak, Hollandia and 2 other bases are recieving troops, base forces and engeneers.
China is going to blow....tomorrow i'll post some screen shots

RE: Turning point in the Pacific
The brand new Mogami Tactic ( still thanks ) is helping me dealing with the night bombing allied superiority. This turn i made the pay a little, losing a total of 12 planes against theirs 17.
At Truk everithing is ready for operation Mouse Trap. All the convoys are waiting in the port , loaded up with a HUGE armada. Just waiting for the CVs to come back and we'll sail. One week to go!

I'd say so yes, I'd even go as far as to say that this is an overkill. Do you have air superiority over PM? By that i mean can you conduct regular bombing missions from Lae.

RE: Mouse Trap
Since the beginning of the war i never lost the air superiority over PM.
BTW at Lae there will be used 50 sallies, 27 lilies, 54 zeros, 27 nells, and 27 betties
At Rabaul there will be 130 zeros and 150 between nells and betties
At Buna 27 A6M3s
Then i'll use to cover the invasion forces all my CVs except one that is moving back towards Osaka for R&R = 650 carrier aircraft.
The entire surface fleet will be used!!

RE: Mouse Trap
I'll skip the combat report for today....too boring: really nothing happened
Some more details for the operation Mouse Trap.
Ships involved:
385 AKs,APs,PGs,PCs,MSWs
13 CVs,CVEs,CVLs ( all except one CV that is moving back to Japan for R&R)
8 BBs
17 CLs
15 CAs
115 DDs
BBs and CAs will bomb PM from sea
one big MSW TF will open a way through any possible mine field
Probably the biggest Naval Fleet ever.....
50 zeros at Lae will give land based air support, LRCAPping the invasion fleet once it has gotten to PM.
100 bombers at Lae will keep on pounding PM's defences
27 zeros at Buna will give LRCAP during the most dangerous passage: the Gili gili streight
150 LR bombers from Rabaul will help in keeping his feet away
60 zeros from Rabaul will escort the eventual bombing raid starting from this base
a total of 70 planes at Lunga will cover my right wing
600 carrier based plane will give close support and cover the skies above the invasion fleet.
Almost 1000 planes involved, considering 4 emilies chutais and 3 recon chutais
When and If PM will be secured Rabaul will be safe and Lunga and PM will act as first line perimeter defensive positions.
BANZAI
Waste of resources? Waste of Time? Will it be enough to destroy a 60,000 troops , well fortified , garrison?
Any comments?

RE: Mouse Trap
Are you planing to form MSW TF only with minesweepers?
If he have CD units in PM, you can say goodby to your MSW guys (guns will destroy them without escorts).
Your bombardment forces shouldn't suffer many hits from mines (especially BB's and CA's), so it is problably better to put them in invasion fleet which is more vunerable to mines (oh, yes)...
and, before invasion you can sand small commando units loaded on subs (RO?) on PM... this way you will see how many units he has at PM....(of course, you or he should order attack:)

RE: Mouse Trap
Well, waiting for the turn to come in my mail address some more considerations.
If the Mouse Trap will be successfull ( I mean not only PM under japanese flag but also not decisive lost in my naval assets) my next moves will be all directed to consolidate the perimeter and prepare for 1943. China will be all in Japanese hands by the end of July, so if the losses won't be too high at PM i'll reach the 4-1 ratio by mid summer '42, then it will be up to the allies to attack.
I'm planning to let one brigade at PM with some AA and a CD plus a 120airsupport Base force.
One brigade will be deployed at Lae and one regiment at Buna. Another regiment at Munda and another one at Shortland.
2 divisions will be held at Rabaul as tactical defence, ready to be moved to reinforce forward positions if needed.
Another division will be used (in regiments ) in the Marshalls.
The rest of the invasion force will be redeployed in the Area between Kendari, ambonia and the northern Guinea.
The Mariannas are already secured with 7 garrison units , base forces and engeneers.
Palau will be reactivated as major base for the weakest part of the perimeter ( the area facing Darwin)
Timor invasion still to be examinated

Today , the operation Mouse Trap has officially started. The Fleet left the anchors at Truk early in the morning.
Yunan fell as planned...now the western gate of china is closed and Chungkind willbe in my hands very soon!

5th May 42
Another quite day before the storm.
While the Invincible Armada is saling in the seas between truk and Rabaul, some more Air units are moving to the solomons. One experienced sally sentai, previously based at Java , has arrived at Wewak today. All the zeros are resting waiting for the upcomming battle.
12 catalinas have been based at Thursday island...he wants to be sure to dedect me, so probably he's planning a counteroffensive....i fear those 150 fortresses at Cairns....[:(]
In Burma the usual night bombing affair with some redeployment of troops.
In China the partisan guerrilla is now the only arrow he's got left.
May will be the month of truth

Allied counterrattack!
Well, as expected , the allies, knowing about the Mouse Trap operation, decided to launch a counteroffensive against my defensive perimeter. Baker island, undefende, has been taken by a regiment of the 40th US division, transported during night time by a HUGe fast trasport TF. My mine screen has been destroyed by his DMS, with only one hit on a DD and my 55 lrbombers at Tarawa could do nothing about that.
Now i'm in trouble. Tarawa is sourronded by Baker and Nanomea and within one month , if properly supplied with eng these two atolls can be bases for his medium bombers..[:(]
Cooktown reached level 5AF, that means that his 4E bombers can now reach Lae, Buna and all the New Guinea....another pain in the A** . It's gonna be damned bloody to defend my extended perimeter from now on.
