What about more close in maps Mandrake, like, say, False Bay in Macassar. Can you point me to where I can find decent ones of those?

If scrolling down with MSN Encarta isn't good enough..you might get lucky with the U of Texas online collection.

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/

You can also try Google Earth and set the camera to look straight down..or do an orthographic view.

Even Mapquest can be of help...but the resolution isnt there for Makassar

Thank you Mandrake, that UT site looks very promising.

Bah..due to overexuberant seaplane spotting reports, POW and Repulse retreat from what might have been a really nice fight with Fuso and Yamashiro. Koepang is spared for now, as the macerated Jap landing force diverts to Dili to put troops ashore before they become shark bait. Certainly, it was not the Japanese intent to land a full brigade plus several support units at Dili. Despite a missed opportunity for POW and Repulse to fulfill their destinies, this little altercation North of Timor has to go into the win column for the Allies, one of the few in that column. 95% of the "Gull Force" is ashore at Kopeang, although the supply situation limits air deployment. The Jap CVL's disappeared somewhere in the Indian Ocean and may be headed to Timor. Lautem is probably going to get it soon. Perhaps Java can get up there in time after getting a drink.

Revenge for the Revenge?

Post by Cap Mandrake »

The diversion attack on Bangkok very nearly succeeds, reducing fortifications to 0 after the garrison is found to be a support unit.
Unfortunately, the 33rd Div arrives on the second day and, of course, the 18th Indian hits a wall of steel. The whole idea was to drag up a division from Malaysia, instead the 33rd, which was apparently near Tavoy is diverted. Good news for the Moulemin defenders...but the 33rd is now pursuing the 18th Indian up the rail line to Rhaeng, threatenting an envelopment of the Moulemin defences.

Here are the options:

1) Move 3 or 4 brigades from Rangoon and Moulmein and form a line on the Salween R, NW of Raheng (or at Raheng itself)

2) Counterattack with all 4 brigades at Moulemin, possibly driving off the two tank regiments there..thereby threatening Tavoy. Of course, if this fails, there wont be much left to stop the 33rd

3) Turtle defence at Rangoon with a later seaborne evac...uggh

4) Hope the 59 mile problem strikes the 33rd or try to fatigue it with air attacks

Mandrake, maybe I missed something, but isn't Arthur Dent still "hitchhiking" around in this general neighborhood?

If you consider your forces strong enough go ahaed and attack in Moulmein. If it fails you still have not to fear too much as he is not able to counterattack quickly, except he brings in new forces from behind.
Rahaeng looks also nice to take a stand, considering the shock attacks upon river crossing. One division without preparation points for the base might have trouble to push you out of there quickly...

Democracy

Post by Cap Mandrake »

It just occurred to me that Dewey, Cheatham and Howe don't even have my real name. I'll show those bastards.
Dec 20...Our party received the most difficult of news today. On their approach to Kuantan, 8th Indian Brigade was attacked by a strong Japanese force with artillery support and has been sent packing toward Khota Bahru in poor order. FMSV brigade is occupying blocking positions, but a sober assessment reveals we now have no hope of forcing a route to Pahang by primary or secondary roads. The Captain is determined to have a vote by the party as to our choice of action. He has suggested three options: 1) return of the entire party to Khota Bahru to await an unlikely evacuation by sea or air, 2) return of the old, disabled or infirmed to Khota Bahru with available motor transport while the able-bodied push on to the West via moutain foot path toward Pahang 3) that we divide into small groups, disbanding the KVF so as to not invite Japanese attention. I have talked this over with Edith. We both agree that option 2 is the best, despite the obvious perils. As for option 3, I wish to invest nothing in the unrealistic notion that the Japanese will be a benign occupier. A young KVF private, Tomlinson, died today of cerebral malaria. He had turned down his quinine believing he could ward off thd disease with isometric exercise.

Careful dealing with D, C, & H. I once took my Yugo into Clickn'Clack motorsports for a tune-up, whereupon they replaced my entire engine and transmission, 'cause they needed some dough for a big boat payment they had coming due.

I sued them, but they were represented by D, C, & H, and when it was all over, I not only had to pay for the new engine (cheap at the price, it was only 2 squirrels in a new cage), but ended up having to buy their boat from them, too.

BTW, Midway is looking really interesting right now. Keep it up!

Click 'n Clack are bad actors, despite their former heroic service.

As for the Yugo, I favor the later models with the rear window defogger option. Your hands won't get as cold in the Winter pushing the thing, at least until the battery goes dead.

As for Midway, would someone explain to me how 1000 or so US Marines and 6-7K Japanese bent on domination of the Pacific could make nice and settle down to a sitzkrieg on something the size of Midway Is.? Shouldn't this be an Atoll? Or perhaps a dwarf Island?
