RE: The Empire Strikes Back!

Post by PzB74 »

I've not been able to sweep friendly hexes, that's for sure.
You can indeed "count on" escorts to fail their missions and sweep instead - but this is not exactly a bullet proof theory.
I also got a theory about "lost escorts" performing less well than dedicated sweepers.

Yeah, I bought the lost air units; the units lost with pilots and all were returned with pilots.
The units I managed to transfer out pilots (reserve) before scuttling their carriers returned without pilots.
- Had to wait more than a year for it to happen.

If you get CVEs without airgroups they will spawn Kate units if you put them in a large supplied port for some time.

Andy is continuing his creeping offensive in Burma; I'm in the process of completing the reinforcement of Sumatra and Malaya.
Future reinforcements from Home Islands will go to Central Pacific Islands. This means I have to consider whether to send
more troops to Burma from our strategic reserve; doesn't look like we have much of a choice until May when monsoon sets in again.
A tank corps will ship out asap to counter the expected Allied assault into the basin.

Mhhh some advises from my side:

- Ramree Island and the surrounding area gives quite a good terrain to defend. So defend there, even shift some reinforcements to that area if necessary. The enemy approach there threatens your flank and if he breaks through you might be in deep trouble as you can cut of and threaten entire burma from there. In addition what i would count even more important, if that base gets built up it, supply can be brought by sea and that base can supply quite a huge area without the usual supply limitations.

- Consider to establish a second line of defense south of the basin it might be necessary sometimes in the future. Especially Prome as it is open flat terrain should be considered as hard to defend. Raise the forts in that base as high as possible, lvl 8-9 preferred as forts protect against bomber rains very well.

- I am not sure if andy would be able to win a simple battle of attrition. Ind 44 Squads will arrive at 90 each month soon (1 month missing) and in combination with US troops and the Chinese with 350 squads each month attritional warfare in that area is more than possible. In addition most of the Indian Divisions lose parts of their Brith 43 troops and some British units are disbanded. That can give andy a few 100 brit 43 squads to burn in combat.

- You could consider how to delay andys offensive as long as possible and with some additional defense lines in the depth where you can fall back to. Especially the Indian divisions with their TOE upgrades just get stronger and the british and indian armored stuff gets quite strong and has a lot of armor to burn as armor for them arrives in quite good numbers.

- The air war is questionable, but fight it as long as possible. And defensive air battles rock as the enemy loses good numbers of pilots, which should not be underestimated.

I've not been able to sweep friendly hexes, that's for sure.

Try it out PzB.
I am 100% sure you can sweep your hex if there's an enemy unit present.
That's very nice as it's better to fight over friendly land.

I am running beta m3 right now, but I feel it always been the case... you can't sweep your hex if there are only yours LCUs, but if the enemy is present, it's possible.

Yeah, I'm aware of that Beppi! My only immediate concern is that tank division defending against a dozen enemy LCUs.
Without enemy air attacks I wouldn't be worried; today we saved the day by delivering a dozen attacks by Jap army bombers.
- Now Andy can see how easy it is to attack / defend without having complete air superiority.

Reinforcements are moving up and will secure the flank; the 2 tank divisions being shipped in will then form the basin / sout of basin
defense force together with 2500 AV already present.

Our air tactics still work; dispersed CAP as Andy got lots of targets now.
Our destroyers sortied forward and dodged a number of SBDs. Tomorrow they will bombard the enemy force attacking our tank division.
This way we keep the heat on and prevent them from consolidating and delivering an effective thrust (I hope).

A bombardment attack from the northern flank (which is in danger of being isolated) shows only a single Chinding Bde opposing us.
More evidence that Andy wants to flank us. Of course we will never allow it, if worst comes to show the KB will come in and save the day
with a few massive counterstrikes.

Will try to sweeps over friendly base with enemy incursion next turn Viberpol [:)]

PzB, clear your PM box - its full!

Perhaps we could arrange something for both of you [;)], but I cant arrange anything if we cant communicate :)

btw, dont worry abut Burma theater... its old Andy's preocupation. Unfortunatly, my AAR was lost due reckless behaviour of certain forum member and moderators, so you cant look there what is best defence against "i will outflank you" AndyMac..

just play clever... defend first line (but prepare 2nd and 3rd defencive line meanwhile) and than suddently retreat to another "Gustav-san" line.... you decided well, using surface combat ships for defence against enemy amphibious assaults on Malayan peninsula, together with air force would be enough imho... good old Andy.... sometimes i can imagine him as young Winston Churchill (WW I Galipoli)...

Just trade land for time - but not before it is neccesary. Im sure you will find the way master PzB :)

Interesting fact is, that your Tank Forces would do better fighting Allied Tank Forces, despite being far inferior. With 75 Hard Attack of Commonwealth squads, your tanks will be completely disabled in few days, so your best bet is to avoid large concentration of infantry.

It is Japan, you should have more ground troops, than Allies, no matter the game-time.
From Tracker for the Dec 08 GC.
Allies:

Wow, Japan have THAT many engineers? I thought Allies get, at least, 3 times more.
Anyway, those numbers do not tell much. The good comparison would be either checking it by AV, or counting only large units
1) Lots, and I mean LOTS, of Allies units sooner, or later withdraw. on Japanese side, except Thai, it is maybe 10 units.
2) Allies will lose around 200 units in Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaya and DEI, during Japanese assault (well, you can rebuy them now, but how many Philippine squads are there produced after 1942? At least KNIL gets reinforcements in 1945)
3) There is lots of something like Tahiti Detachment, with 2 squads, 2 Aviation Support, 2 AAMGs, and 10 support. Not really anything useful, except air-trip-stop
4) There is also lots of Independent (or Commando) Battalions, with like 15 squads, and support. They will be destroyed after 2 attacks
5) And finally, permanently-restricted units. On Japanese side all of them will be in the fight, sooner, or later, in one form, or another. For Allies, most of USA/Australia/New Zealand units will never see fight. Or only for a short time.

Full - again? [8|]
Message capacity is 0.000000000000000000001 % of the space a single AAR report requires [;)]
Tried to delete some old messages!

We've actually ordered a trip to Split, leaving on Saturday and going to stay for a week.
Got a bargain deal we couldn't refuse! [8D] Will recon the area and decide how to organize a longer vacation later on.

Yeah, will just slog it out with Andy - put reinforcements and backup in place and live with the losses and try to make the kill ratio as favorable as possible
without loosing focus on the all important SRA region. Central Pacific is OK for now no matter what Allies may try.

A tank division got lots of infantry and with dug in tanks they should make formidable defensive formations in a jungle hex.
Moved in some reinforcements and 2 more divisions and a Bde will also arrive shortly.
- Number of ac available is so large now that I doubt Andy will bother about losses, only large 4E losses will deter him.

Something interesting happened this turn; for the first time _EVER_ we intercepted minelaying B-24s of Rangoon!!! [&o]
No less than 13 were reported lost today! 2 other missions laid mines unopposed but this may indeed make it more hazardous to mine major ports.

Skip bombing attack!

As you can see air losses are still very favourable and we make mince meat of many sweeping units.
Guess they are weary with fatigue and flying long distances while we can rest and rotate our CAP formations.
A large number of fighter units set to low % CAP is quite efficient and resilient.

RE: The Empire Strikes Back!

Post by PzB74 »

A most interesting turn:

Firstly - our sweeps over friendly held hex did not materialize.
Neither did any "Andy sweeps" over Ramree Island, and it cost him blood today.

Our amphibious landing force (2nd Ambh Bde) arrived at Ramree Island and started unloading.
Strong naval units bombarded the enemy and sank a LCT convoy in the process.
- Enemy air attacks did sink a troop ship but we utterly decimated the strike units today [:D]
Among enemy losses:
36 Beaufighters
34 Hurries
22 SBDs
7 Vengeance

More than 100 enemy ac destroyed for the loss of ca 20 Jap ac!

Our bombardment again stopped the Allied ground attack north of Ramree cold in its tracks.
Seems like we have sufficient force in place to dish out some hurt.

Congratulations, nice turn, nice use of fighter cover and especially nice use of your surface assets. It is very respectable to use surface assets that late in the game which such a good effect and low losses.

Well, he has to do something and he is drawing Jap resources to Burma....
Thx Beppi, but we may have stirred a hornets nest. Andy will now have a week to plan more as I'm going to Split for vacation!

So a weeks break from the war, need some R&R [8D]
Cheers

RE: The Empire Strikes Back!

Back from my little Dalmatian expedition! [:)]
The last day of 1943 - packed with action.....

As our amph brigade continues to unload at Ramree Island a large enemy surface combat TF arrives lead by a
Cleveland class CL. We have only 4 destroyers in place with another 7 enroute but unfortunately these did not arrive until the PM turn.
- Our outmatched destroyers put of a great fight heavily damaging the large enemy light cruiser with a torpedo hit, thus fending off the enemy task force.

A second smaller destroyer task force arrives and engage our invasion TF; our ships are taken by surprise and the destroyer and light cruiser in the escort
can't prevent 4 transports from being sunk; 2 carrying troops.

During the air combat heavy air to air battles take place; a bit funny - we sweep Ramree Island while Allies sweep the hex we own just to its north [:D]
Both sides loose 32-33 ac, but 18 Thunderbolts are reported destroyed. We loose 11 pilots KIA.

Andy has flown in another para unit to Ramree Island; the forces there are now evenly matched - 2000 vs 2000 troops.
Their fate will be sealed by the larger land combat taking place to the north east.

RE: The Empire Strikes Back!

Post by PzB74 »

Lots of action in the last couple of turns!
Below is a summary of the key events together with limited combat reports:

Strong enemy ground troops advanced into Schwebo on January 1st - they're all but cut
of from their own lines and our 2400 AV launched an attack on the 2nd of January. The attack
was repulsed with similar losses to both sides; if Andy can't get supplies in he will be in trouble soon.

On Ramree Island we bombard from sea and air and a deliberate attack by the Amph Bde and paras on the 2nd of January
got 48 - 25 AV, 2 short of recapturing the place. North of Ramree Island strong Allied forces are hammeing our Guards Tank
division but can't dislodge it.

Surface forces clash outside Ramree Island and 2 Jap destroyers are sunk while several Allied ones are damaged.
Air attacks on our fast agile destroyers are not successful. Lots of Allied subs operate in the area around Andaman Islands and our
ASW ac are very busy; we loose a transport bringing in smaller troop detachements to the surrounding islands.

On January 1st we achieve very good defensive results in the air.
On January 2nd strong Allied forces sweep and bomb Prome; the results - ca 120 ac destroyed on each side.
Fighting over friendly turf the results are acceptable for 1944.

The next few days will be interesting [:)]

So, how are SSXs? Have they finally showed up from queue?

I would not be so sure, with number of transport planes on Allied side [:)]
Anyway, push the air/ground attacks, they uses LOTS of supply.
North of Ramree Island strong Allied forces are hammeing our Guards Tank
division but can't dislodge it.
You are losing quite a lots of tanks. Probably disabled number crossed critical mass. Either quickly reinforce this hex, or withdraw, before you lose hundreds of tanks due to retreat.
You could also drop some supply there. This is on the coast, right? Some night fast transports maybe?
Night Naval bombardment of Ramree Island at 54,48

Japanese Ships
BB Ise
CA Nachi
CL Jintsu
DD Suzukaze

Allied ground losses:
139 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 10 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 10 disabled

Port hits 9
Port supply hits 4
Quite good results.
Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIc Trop x 10
Spitfire VIII x 10
B-25D1 Mitchell x 3
P-40K Warhawk x 22
F4U-1A Corsair x 18
F6F-3 Hellcat x 37
Those are attacks from land? With HELLCATs? He must be getting short on planes.

Seems there is quite lots of Allied shipping on the coast. Since their fighters are busy around Ramree/Schwebo, you should try to sunk them in bases, by air.

I haven't checked yet, let me do so next turn! [:)]

The Guards tank division just have to hold on until reinforcement arrives; it was a supporting tank regiment
that took most of the losses; this unit was destroyed in todays fighting but again we deflected a shock attack
by superior forces. In 1-2 days a Bde will arrive to bolster defenses and 2 divisions are only days behind.
- Plan is to send 1 division to Ramree Island and finish that menace.

Me thinks Andy got lots of surplus Hellcats and navy squadrons - especially after the heavy carrier losses.
The danger of using naval and ground attack ac is that there are 500 Allied fighters in the area and when our escort failed to materialise
completely over Shwebo we lost 50 Helens....

Loads of enemy transport ac over Ramree this turn, 50 intercepts.
Again, the only way to strike back on bases like Calcutta is full KB strike and since our defenses in the Burma South East Asia region are very
strong we know that this is just an attrition theatre. I'm actually reinforcing Central Pacific and innef defensive lines now with new LCUs and base units.
The going in 45-46 will be extremely tough, for now we just have to hang on and dish out more pain than we receive and can afford.

44 already eh ? wow that's some good progress. Great meeting you on-line the other day (WOT). And getting Ramtree would hugely simplify your lines at least.

Long live the empire !

Likewise Rob, chance for random encounter is pretty small but we can have some platoon battles when we get compatible equipment! [:)]

1944 is always a challenging period in the game for Japan. Andy said his sub put 2 torps into the CV Junyo last turn, that was a wild fantasy fortunately.
Still, this was a tough day in Burma. The main problem is that air attacks are very effective at reducing supplies, even in fortified hexes with 6 forts.
- Impossible to stockpile ammo even for 1 day when the 4Es arrive.

There was a FUBAR episode north of Schwebo today; the NW flank (1 div pluss support) ATTACKED the enemy; I never intentionally gave that order.
This happened just as strong enemy elements moved into the hex and attacked themselves. The result was that our division was utterly routed and its sister to the east
is now cut off.

Have attached a map and some considerations for the continued ground campaign in Burma (which I'm not looking forward to at all....).

Hang in there. Concur you should fall back. In '44 giving ground is inevitable and you are way ahead of the game. How can we handle those 4Es? One suggestion is to consider this an interim line and begin stockpiling TONS of supplies on the Prome line now. Then when you fall back you will have so much supply you won't be relying on daily draws.

Watching to see how you deal with the 4E's in '44. I can seem to handle them in '42 and into '43. '44 though, they just seem impervious in the stock games.

It seems your whole theater is low on supply. Three bases (well Shwebo is ALWAYS low) are low on supply already.
Also, it seems your sorties number gap rising, and rising. You have now more sorties difference, than the best Allies achievement before. 1000!

Surprisingly small permanent loses, as for defeated Division. In truth, it seems your unit is not completely cut off, as you control other side of the river. If hexside is not yours, you can send small unit through the river, to reclaim it.

Anyway, you should not leave the bottleneck to China, because otherwise, in few weeks, you will have another several full Chinese Corps in Burma.

I would say, there will be Panzer charge on the road by the river, so you should prepare your tank units to counter that.
