I know Ilfracombe well, my mother was born in North Devon and my grandparents lived there all their lives, one of the things we as kids liked was, in fact, seeing the fish piled up on the quays. And then going back to the granparents house for steak and kidney pie with mash and green beans. My nana cooked the best pies I've ever had (sorry mum).

I spent my summers in Plymouth and as a child I was well aware that dead fish were on the dockside. No great shakes. Of course, back then we'd have been told to bugger off if we'd complained that the fish market smelled of fish. And rightly so.
