Armed operational Iwakumi VMFA-121 F-35B on the drills surrounding North Korea:

And also, another caveat on F-35: in warm weathers the loaded weapons bay only can be closed in ground operations by 10 cumulative minutes.

"Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said a Patriot Advanced Capability-3 interceptor unit was deployed at the Hakodate base on southern Hokkaido "as a precaution" as part of government preparations for a possible emergency."

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/ ... 9-04-46-59

"Japan currently has a two-step missile defense system. First, Standard Missile-3 interceptors on Aegis destroyers in the Sea of Japan would attempt to shoot down missiles mid-flight. If that fails, surface-to-air PAC-3s would try to intercept them."

Seems like a reasonable reaction to ongoing events.

An alleged J-20 Prototype #2021 conducted a maiden flight. It's the first prototype installed with indigenous engines, but yet to determined the exact model.

Image

Rumors referred those engines are customized WS-10B used by J-11B and J-16, which has little inferior thrust compare to AL-31F (130kN vs 137kN, A/B on), but with a saw-toothed nozzle and lower core temperature to reduce signatures at the back.

USS George Washington updates:

"NORFOLK (NNS) -- After nearly 25 years of serving the country, the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) is preparing to take an extended, well deserved and much needed, 40-plus-month break for its Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH) maintenance period.

A U.S. Navy ship's life journey is long, arduous and full of the dedication, tears, blood and sweat of its crew. This journey is one that is loaded with hard work and long hours, all while at the mercy of the sea and its environment. After nearly 25 years of serving the country, the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) is preparing to take an extended, well deserved and much needed, 40-plus-month break for its Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH) maintenance period.

Throughout the first 25 years of an aircraft carrier's life, it goes through several maintenance periods, but never anything to the extreme of an RCOH. The ship, not only takes a toll from the elements and the sea, but also falls behind technologically after 25 years of innovation happening around it. RCOH is essentially the time to renew the ship.

During RCOH, and the follow-on outfitting period, nearly all combat systems equipment will be refurbished, upgraded or replaced with newer technology, said Cmdr. Don Wilson, GW's combat systems officer. It truly is quite amazing how much work will be done. The ship will receive upgraded weapons systems; to include Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM), Evolved NATO Sea Sparrow Missile System, Close-In Weapons System (CIWS), Mk-38 25mm automatic gun systems, and Anti-Torpedo Defense Systems.

The Ship's Self-Defense System and all other tactical network and intelligence systems and sensors will be upgraded, said Wilson. Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services will become the new ship-wide network, which will include a new video distribution and surveillance systems, and the mast and the SPN-49 radar tower will be cut off and replaced with a modern design."

I assume the new radar will be the rotating version of EASR.

DSEI 2017: 155mm Vulcano Precision-Guided Munition Showcased for the 1st Time
Image
Leonardo and BAE Systems were showcasing a 155mm variant of the Vulcano precision-guided munition for the first time last week at DSEI, the international defense show held in London, UK. Back in June this year, the two companies have announced an initiative to pursue collaborations on new precision-guided solutions that will offer U.S. and allied military forces a range of low-risk, cost effective, advanced munitions for advanced, large caliber weapon systems.
...
Talking to Navy Recognition during DSEI 2017, John Perri, Director of Business Development at BAE Systems / Weapons Systems explained “Because BAE Systems is the OEM of the AGS and Mk 45 – as well as M777 and M109 – it’s easier for us to integrate Vulcano into these weapons. On AGS in particular, Vulcano’s design makes it much more adaptable to the automated handling system.”

I completely agree with you. But in this concrete situations there was no noncombatants in front of Ka-52 and pilot didn't press a pickle. There was a hardware problem.

Laser arm race is getting hotter. Lockheed demostated 5 hits against drones, while Guorong punched through a steel plate carried by a drone from 360m:

USS Nimitz (CVN 68) completed its 100,000th aircraft launch from Catapult Two Sept. 25, marking the second time, since the ship’s commissioning in 1975, that that milestone has been achieved.

Forbes has militarily reported China’s first commercial amphibious drone, because of its substantial cargo capacity:

SpaceX’s planned rocketry traveling could be the most brutal way to get passengers to the other side of the planet, with extreme speed no other vehicles IRL could achieve. This may sounds like the biggest trolling attempt to Chinese/Russian aerospace and anti-ballistic defenses, but it also make me rethink some ‘threatening’ technology can be used peacefully.

If rocket transports revolutionize into common method of long distance travel, the efficiency could be more beneficial than airliners:

There is something identical to the underwater ‘fighter’, is the tiny size with some small weapons. The WWII-era Italian SDV has that structure, and many other derivatives tend to arm it with 2 small torps, or becomes a transport for SCUBA-ops. However, smaller means short-legged, and it’s not as fast as a nuclear submarine for chasing. Some powerful jet propulsion could be useful to improve the design.

Meanwhile, an alleged clear photo of J-20 with 2 WS-10 engines conducted maiden flight was emerged right at China’s 68th anniversary day:
