What Italian port was attacked on December 2, 1943?

Over 100 German Junkers Ju-88 bombers of Luftflotte 2, achieving complete surprise, bombed shipping and personnel operating in support of the Allied Italian campaign, sinking 27 cargo and transport ships and a schooner in the harbor.

At first, the Allied High Command tried to conceal the disaster, in case the Germans believed that the Allies were preparing to use chemical weapons, which might provoke them into preemptive use, but there were too many witnesses to keep the secret, and in February the U.S. Chiefs of Staff issued a statement admitting to the accident and emphasising that the U.S. had no intention of using chemical weapons except in the case of retaliation.

I assume that refers to the battle e.g. Taranto, Pearl Harbor etc as opposed to the ship never leaving port - but I might be wrong...

If she never left port at all, that must mean she was attacked on the slipway or in the fitting out basin. Can't readily think of any in the latter camp.

Extraneous's question's answer is Bari, Italy. That raid did hit an Allied ship loaded with chemical weapons, causing many military and civilian casualties. These were compounded by the secrecy surrounding everything - basic precautions like taking off exposed clothing weren't used, for example. The whole incident was hushed up to a huge degree, with some details only coming out decades later.

I just read a new history of the Allied campaign in Italy that devotes several pages to this incident. Rick Atkinson's "The Day of Battle"

The port is on the MWiF map.

Fire on ammunition ships John Harvey and bomb hits on John L. Motley caused massive detonations, which shattered windows seven miles away. A bulk gasoline pipeline and supply were severed and the gushing fuel ignited engulfing other ships.

In total, 800 crew and civilians lost their lives in the fire, explosions and poisoning by mustard gas that was on board John Harvey.
