RE: Carriers clash in SWPAC!!! Results are...

Check the file you sent me... All but one of your CV Zero squadrons is set for CAP at 100 feet. If you need me to ( if you've over-written it ) I can send you the turn file again. If you do do a redo I would suggest that you just run the hell away. Now isn't the time to fight the Americans. Let them take Buin and come back at them in a month or two's time when you have enogh fighters to actually protect your ships etc...

I take your word for it and I do have the file at my computer in home.

No. I wohn't run away unless Chuck wants to. If I loose than so be it.. BUT not like this. I mean 100 feet... [8|][:(] ..That is awful and those fighters wohn't hit ANYTHING from that alltitude. Propably a lot of them refused to fly out too.

...just not right to throw away months of gameplay only to notice this. I have invested a lot of my spare freetime into this.

If he doens't want to fight than so be it... fine with that too but as said 100 feet... what the hell happened! [:(][8|]

I will let you know once Chuck replies.

Aztez, I think you owe WITP an apology [;)].  All the abuse you hurled its way looks unjustified - results seem to be mostly down to the dodgy command decisions.

Actually the apology would be not delete the game from the HD... That is the best WITP is going to get.

I mean had a lot of weird things happened before in allied side.

(TF loading troops and than troops popping up some atolls way off the whole theatre, etc etc, etc)

Ok. I got email back from Chuck.

We will re-run the turn with proper CAP alltitudes and check what kind of results it brings.

IF the US CV fleet is wiped out without no major damage to IJN or vice versa than we discuss it again.

This whole "error" left a bad taste so this was a proper thing to do.

Chuck also said that his 4E bombers stood down againts Rabaul so that base propably will be hit hard.

I will send the file with the same orders (except CAP/Escort alltitude) and lets see how it plays out.

KB throws punches againts US CV Fleet

Post by aztez »

Hi all...

We did redo the turn after that alltitude screw up. Well, it is hard to recreate everything.

At first it seemed that there would be no CV duels. The TF's reacted as before but failed to launch any strikes. Next day the hell broke loose and I would definately call this allied victory.

The only thing diffrent is that due to CAP alltitudes it did not leave such an bad taste and all in all this fair battle. Which I would say I lost... [8|][:)]

Here it how it went down....

Hmmm... That is how it went. It could have much worse yet again It could have much better since CV Wasp and CV Yorktown escaped the slaughter.

I will start working on the turn. Chuck has the combat replay + files and it is 99% certain that this is the way we will go. Other option would be to withdraw completely... so basically we are not going to go with the old flawed file.

RE: KB throws punches againts US CV Fleet

We will continue with the above results.

This was already an tactical US Navy victory. Even though he lost 2 CV's his results were much better. I did loose huge amount of qualified pilots in these fierce battles plus at least 1 IJN CV is confirmed sun.

Thus I initially lost CV Junyo and 3 CVE's. Several other carriers are damaged. (See screenshot)

I can confirm that US Navy lost CV Hornet and BB North Carolina. I would also assume that CV Enterprise will sink too by reading the damage levels.

I have been watching both sides’ AAR’s, so will be careful with what I say.

Commiserations from a fellow Japanese player, as you still had the worst of the re-run.

I was surprised to see that the battle took place significantly to the south of the previous battle site. It looks as though this may have helped to tip the scales against you somewhat, as his LBA was able to take part whilst yours did not.

A sad day for the Empire, but take heart and dig in: he’s still got a long way to go to the Home Islands, and you will have other opportunities!

Shoho and zuiho are gone, you could still hope to save hiyo, if his SS not get her first. Others are not in immediate danger. Now time to organize next move. I see his airfield in Lunga, this means you be careful if you want a pursue.

See my post dear aztez, as jap player you need be careful, careful, and more careful!!

Local Yokel: Nice to see you "again". Yeah, I did have the worst but at least we took down 2 US CV's which wohn't come around until 1944 which is not a bad thing.

Also He now has 4 US CV's operational and we do have more so basically in terms of carriers we enjoy an numerical advantage. [:)] (looking at the bright side)

You are correct. The place where the battle took place was a bit diffrent. This was due to the fact that the battle did not start on the 1st day... just TF's reactions and no launches.

Thanks. We will definately start digging in! ...and the war is far from over! [:)]

trollelite: Good read! I think CV Hiyo is safe unless submarines get an strike againts it. Definately time reorgarnize and the turn went pretty well.. or should we say that it was far from disaster.

Point taken!!! [:D] I need to tone down my aggressive mentality! [:D][:D]  ...Nemo has told me this too... and now on I will try to listen!

As for the game... I did run the turn before work and here is a short recap of things... (Full update later tonight)

* US CV's + LBA's hit those 2 badly damaged CVL's. Both sunk.
* US Cruiser TF intercepted IJN CL + 2 DD's ... all sunk.
* Weather cancelled Port Moresby strikes so Betty's took off from Rabaul and Wevak. [:D][:D] ...hitting several transports in SouthPac plus couple cruisers. Unfortunately these LBA's didn't hit any carriers.

We had a long email discussion with Nemo last night! I was in favour of retreating my carriers towards Gilberts/Marshalls.. he was vouching for Truk.

After debate I decieded to go for Truk and it seems like right thing to do since Betty's were lucky and just those 2 badly damaged damaged CVL's were lost. US carriers did not pursue which was good too.

Now I need reorganize my Carrier Fleet... it is still force to be reckon with. I will change more fighters into them and thus make it much stronger for future operations. As Nemo suggested and he is absolutely correct.

Overall we will survive and live to fight another day. [:)

Oh and in DEI... well Betty and LBA bombers ambushed Dutch Cruiser TF near Kendari. Several ships hit hard there too!!!]

100 ft CAP ? even I know your not THAT daft [;)]. maybe the TF commander got paranoid about PT boats [;)]

Nasty exchange in the replay too but 2 allied CV's and a good time to sink them too is a nice result for 3CVE's (although maybe not with the CV thrown in). Nemo had made a lot of excellent points and observations recently and i'm learning a lot from this AAR too (maybe I'll finally go dark side before i die [;)])

On the plus side . Vlad is looking good and will serve to unnerve Chuck as he might be getting victory disease sooner rather than later (maybe more ambush ops )

as ever good luck and have fun

sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Hmm...
I've had it very often, that my interceptors didn't dive fast enough to attack very low fliying bombers, when they were on +25.000 ft.
Maybe it wouldn't be THAT wrong to let 20-30 Zeros fly at 100 or 1000 ft to intercept TBs?

Rob: Yeah. 100 feet.. I don't know what the hell happened! [:(]

Definately the best time to sink those CV's. Allthough it was a bit costly adventure it did not go all in vain.

As for Nemo.. well good points indeed and actually he is yet to be wrong with his advices/suggestions. [:D][8|] ...makes me sometimes embarrased. [:)]

The offensive againts Vladivostok will start soon!!! Need to get 2 Engineer units in place and it go Green for the operation.

Oh.. we will serve antidote for that victory disease soon enough!!! [;)]

I can absolutely recommend playing as IJN/IJA. It is actually very challenging and now I'am starting to get hang off it with all the advices I have gotten from the readers of this AAR and from Nemo ofcourse.

Historiker: Hmmm. That might actually make sense. Those torpedo bombers should meet CAP right from the get go! Never thought about that either I must admit. (Like that is some news)

Allied Ships
AK Malaita, Torpedo hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage

Nice! The gods were with us last turn. Allied 4E hammer did not fly out of Port Moresby due to bad weather!!1 [&o]

Naturally CVL Shoho & CVL Zuiho are lost. A silence was held to the lost sailors and ships.

Rest of the Carrier fleet should be ok unless we are very unlucky with allied submarines. As you can see the allied CV's were too scared to pursue. Propably good for them since those Betty's could have shredded them to pieces along with the KB.

Also CA Canberra sunk near Port Moresby. So she was unable to reach friendly harbour.

Next turn I might loose some bombers here but that quite ok. The most worrying thing is that allied are building up mutual supporting airfields in the region.

Well the production of aircraft is building up nicely. Also pilot training is starting to provide good results!

The battle of Vladivostok is about to start and soon there will be 7000 AV knocking on the doors plus quite a few Engineer units.

RE: KB throws punches againts US CV Fleet

Post by Nemo121 »

Aztez,

I was wondering if you could do the following for me:

1. Look at your CVEs, CVLs and CVs and list their top speeds ( when fully repaired), current system damage and airplane capacities for me please. I just want to look at your next turn with a better sense of what might be available in 3 months time ( and what will be available between now and then ).

2. Can you also give a run-down of how many Zero, Kate and Val Daitai and Chutai you have? This will let us know how big your training infrastructure can be and also how many Zeroes will be available to load onto your CVs, CVLs and CVEs.

3. If you've sunk 2 CVs then he should have about 4 left at the moment. I amn't familiar with CHS but a back of the envelope calculation should be able to tell you how many CVs, CVLs and CVEs the US will have available for 1st January 1943... and their capacities ( and the same for the Brits obviously ).

Because of this battle you have pretty much lost the ability to interdict his isolation of Rabaul but it'll take him a couple of months to do that and be ready to leapfrog north. By that stage you might just be able to wage a succesful defensive battle.... and that's what you've got to concentrate on. Every time you try to hit back now you will just lose forces and put back the time that you could wage a succesful defensive battle - e.g without these losses there was every possibility of holding the line at Rabaul into 1943. Now you won't be able to.

Still accept the losses you have to accept, don't throw away any forces you don't have to and identify your next defensible line and begin fortifying it massively and with just a little luck and an unwary Allied player you might be able to cause some serious losses to his 2nd leapfrog from now. ( the one which carries him well north of Rabaul )

In terms of Vladivostok.... Why are you being inefficient in taking the Soviets on head to head in Vladivostok? Wouldn't it be much, much cheaper to just land 2,000 AV at Suchan, march across country behind Vladivostok and force ctangus to either:
1. abandon Vladivostok and give it to you on the cheap in order to save his troops from encirclement and eventual collapse.
2. stick with it and allow you to hold his troops in Vladivostok with a small siege force ( which will use the urban defensive bonus to YOUR advantage for a while ) while the rest of your army chases up the rail lines and drives the rest of the Soviet Army back into the Siberian wastelands where they won't present nearly as much of a problem for the next 2 and a half years.

Without cutting the routes for reinforcements to Vladivostok the Soviets can run in extra divisions at will and every extra division they run in ( of 250 points ) will result in a 1,000 adjusted AV bonus to the defenders. You will need to bring in 4 divisions to compensate for every single division he brings in. That's not really a race you can easily win.

P.s. In CHS what's the supply situation? Does Vladivostok get free supplies every turn or something crazy like that?
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

As expected allies took their revenge. Nothing major here... pilots were saved and these aircraft losses aren't too bad compared to what was achieved!

KB is also safe and will replenish and refit for future battles ahead. We will however need to reorganize the whole carrier fleet.

RE: KB throws punches againts US CV Fleet

Nemo: Good points! I will send the whole turn to look at once I get it from Chuck.

1. I will do that. (I will post an screenshot of our remaining fleet when the next turn arrives) I think we all the fleet carriers ready except for CV Soryu and CV Hiyu.

2. Definately. I will post an screenshot from our air assets for everyone to see. As said the production coming on very nicely thanks to you.

3. I can confirm we sunk 2 US CV's plus an BB. (Those are already on the list of sunken ships) There were 6 carriers in action so US is down to 4. No idea where the British ones are.

I have no idea either when US starts producing CVL's plus CVE's but I would assume in early 1943.

Agreed. I think Rabaul will be invaded BUT we can put up an fight. Once the Rabaul is done I feel it is time get away from Truk.

I had an look on the map and I think the best idea to defend Solomons is where he cannot bring in his LBA's.

There are Wewak, Aitape and Hollandia. (Mutually defending bases)

Palau + Ullithi (Aviation unit was unloaded last turn) area. There are at least 3 good bases for LBA's without too much threat from allied airpower.

Than there is Ponape and Truk ofcourse.

...and Marianas ofcourse.

The transports should hit Kendari next turn one thus begin the final operations in Celebes area.

How do you see this? I mean it is propably waste of time to try and stop him in New Britain? Not that I'am proposing of abandoning Rabaul no.. sizeable garrison there is required so he cannot start pounding Truk!

Agreed. If he leap frogs than KABOOM.. strike him and strike him hard! I have 2 longterm allied games under my bealt and the way to make him suffer is to sink his transports. Without them he has naval assets but NO means of using them effectively. This would stop him cold.

Hmmm. I actually don't think we can land at Suchan. He has 3 units there plus 100% air superiority. Those transports would be toasted before they can unload. I would love to do this but how? We don't have troops ready yet unless we bring them on from South. (I feel it might take too long to do this)

...but we could swing by Vladivostok via land and force him to abandon the base? [;)] Thus trapping those troops at Suchan and in Vladivostok? How about this? It might take a bit more time but this is definately doable.

I have no clue whether Vladivostok actually recieves freebie supplies in CHS!!! [8|]

Chitose and Chiyoda are 12/31/42 in Osaka to convert to CVL. Returned to your pool and can be accelerated.
