I intend to take ComradeP's suggestion to heart and have specialized armies. At this point the vast majority will be INFANTRY Armies, qualification is a 5 or better Infantry command rating.

My 38th Tank Division which was bare of tanks last turn has filled-out wonderfully. Look at the T-34's and KV-1's numbers. I had Tank divisions tooling around with 6 KV-1's,here he has 20!

The 43rd Army will be my first Mech/Mobile Army. Now to find a good commander for it.

Here is a good example of needing to be flexible with decision making. In my above post I had decided to make 43rd Army my first mech/cav army. Then I took a look at the current Army cmdr,he has a 6 Infantry rating and good political,Admin, morale and initiative. It would cost 10 admin pts to dismiss him as well. This is a good Army cmdr for an Infantry Army,so 43rd stays an Infantry Formation!

I'll find some reprobate to replace for an Mech cmdr or find a mech officer saddled with Infantry and get things switched. For those that like micromanagement, this level of control really gets me into the game...I like to savor it frankly. Those that don't want to think about it,just keep on clicking, the game still plays well and is fun...but you might wonder why your combat results are so different for various armies that on surface might look similar.

I found my sacrificial lamb in the cmdr of the 54th ARMY! This fellow is mediocre and too politically connected for my tastes. His posterior is the heck outa my command zone,a FAR EAST posting is recommended.

This is my choice as the new Mech oriented 54th Army commanding General.

There tend to be more Soviet commanders rated under 5 then above 5. [:(]

Some of the lousy ones didn't belong having a combat command.

I'm sure I'll have my share of lousy commanders. Right now I am packing Moscow with boys to blunt the German drive.

Remember the opening event in Stalingrad the movie with whats his name,Jude Law?

"The man with the rifle shoots, when the man with the rifle is shot, pickup the rifle and shoot."

Thats kinda my situation at Moscow, guys come off the train and walk to the FRONT.

I bugged out of the North to free-up the divisions fighting there. Outposting the Finn no attack line with NKVD border guard units and fortified zones.

The quiet sector around V.Luki..I did air recon,no real German formations backing this area up. Or else my recon pilots just suck.

Looks like the Germans are trying to linkup around Gomel and Kiev areas. Mainly German infantry in the southern operations area. They will try and link with a panzer thrust from just south of Kiev. I'm falling back!

Opposite Bryansk the Germans are thin indeed. I isolated a worn looking infantry division and threw 3 cavalry divisions into a raid at his airbases. Didn't quite make those bases but hope i put a scare into him.

Here we have a look at the coastal Front after my turn 9 move. My forces at Odessa hold with the Romanians seemingly happy to simply invest them.

Wasn't that because Stalin killed off a lot of the good ones? Or were they just retired?

Most good officers were "purged" by Stalin in the 1930's

Kept going into the 40's, too; even did the business while the war was going.

Even though it looks like he is after Moscow, I tend to think german players will go for Leningrad because taking that secures the flank for the winter. If he takes Moscow at all, it will be tough for him to hold it in the blizzard turns. Just my humble opinion and it is hard to think that with his army closing in on the capitol.
