the main area for improvement, they thought, was that the videos are sometimes a bit dry.
The videos are only dry to people who are not interested in the subject.
most successful channels rely on shorter videos, usually less than 15 minutes, which lets people get the information and the entertainment without having to dedicate a big block of time
If people don't like long videos then they can fast forward.

I only want Baloogan to change one thing. Start making some videos again! It's been a while. [:)]

Since I think what Baloogan is doing is really valuable and helpful, I certainly don't want to sound like I'm criticizing him. But I still think my students made some good points. Even if he's only interested in creating "instructional" videos, and does not care if they're entertaining or popular, some of their observations might prove helpful. For example, instead of going all the way through one scenario and talking about every aspect of it, which means he's got a series of videos that total a couple of hours, it might be better to edit all that footage down and create several short videos, each one focusing on a particular concept like "how to use laser-guided weapons" or "using prosecution zones" or "MiG-21s are outclassed by F-15s, but they can still kill your Eagles if you are not careful." (This also avoids the problem of "I don't want to fast forward...I might miss something important!")

And if he's trying to "win converts" and get more people to try Command, I think shorter videos might be less overwhelming. We don't want to scare them off before they're hooked for life, after all. :)

On that, my friend, we are in agreement! :)

One group of my students during the Winter term did a 20-minute presentation on "what makes a good Youtube channel" so I gave them the option, for extra credit, of doing a short (i.e., about 500 words) report on the Baloogan Campaign videos.

They were impressed with the depth of detail and the usefulness of the videos; the main area for improvement, they thought, was that the videos are sometimes a bit dry. Two things they thought might help would be to add humor where appropriate and to have other gamers join Baloogan as he comments on the scenarios (i.e., "guest stars").

(We know humor can work when talking about Command...http://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/th ... tions.230/ is a great example.)

One other thing they mentioned in their original presentation but did not mention in their extra credit report was that a lot of the most successful channels rely on shorter videos, usually less than 15 minutes, which lets people get the information and the entertainment without having to dedicate a big block of time (which they might not want to do and/or might not actually have in terms of free time).

I don't know if this information will be useful to Baloogan, but I promised them I would pass along their observations; I do think they make some good points.

Wow! I'm really flattered!

I fully agree with your students on all points. I, too, have thought about "what makes a good Youtube channel" and have come up with many of the same points.

I do think mgellis has a good point in that I should have some shorter videos; not everyone's attention spans are created equal.

I am making a new series of shorter videos, each focusing on a specific aspect of Command. A series of simple tutorial vids aimed at the Command beginner.

Lol liked the last comment about making more vids mate. Though some of your videos are from streams if they had noticed and we all had great fun hanging out and chatting that is still great. So for your tutorials perhaps 20mins long but the steams are streams and I for one enjoyed hanging out with everyone chatting anf having a laugh. So mate please don't stop doing that.

Look forward to seeing you mate and eveyone.
