Oh god NO!!....I pine for a Jag not a Ford

Actually, I was just re reading Nimitz, the chapters concerning pre war and his promotion.

That movie was remarkable for portraying history as accurately as it did, but Hollywood scripts can't be taken too seriously. Kimmel had already been held accountable so maybe they were just cutting him some slack??ORIGINAL: AW1Steve

Very interesting reading, I never heard of either of them. I have speculated more than once, the President
had every intention of being ambushed at Pearl or preferably the Philippines. The old battleship line used as
bait. If he indeed entertained this train of thought, I do not believe he foresaw the scale of damage the IJN
was capable of. What I cannot fathom is the whole MacArthur thing on Luzon. How he survived that debacle must
be wrapped in politics.
Next time you watch Tora Tora Tora , look for the two flags briefing Kimmel. Who goes off on them for the 180 B-17suggestion. That was a very small part of the report. Almost completely ignored by Kimmel. [:(]

Geoff just emailed me and rambled something about not being able to do what he wants on the 1st turn because of something about not enough "OPS points". [&:] That sounds ominous to me. Especially since that means he either can't go as far as he wants on the 1st move , or can't get their and still have enough points to launch a strike on the 1st day. [&:]
Obviously he's trying something different, and well outside the normal bounds. If he's planning on going CV hunting , I'm definitely going to send the Enterprise and Lexington way south , and way fast. If he's going to try the San Diego Gambit , my only defense is to form a task force and move Saratoga on the 1st turn (as well as moving aircraft into the area for a 2nd strike) and putting up a CAP.
He won't have any problem hitting the PI on a "normal 1st move teleport" so that can't be a problem. The only thing he can't do is reach the DEI or SOUTH of the PI . That might work IF he wants to hit escaping ships from the PI going south. But Chickenboy (who's favorite opening is the PI gambit) has shown me several times (by Royally cleaning my clock) that you don't need to be there on the 1st turn to take out slow escaping ships. You can get there BEFORE them and kill them as they come to you.
And I can't believe that he really wants to use all that force to hit Singapore on the 1st day. It's over kill , it doesn't give you anything like the number of points that PH would, and is very risky to enter those waters with the KB as it's narrow, has lots of TB's , LBA , pt's and worst of all , effective subs that have torpedoes that work just fine.
I'm not sure what he's up to , but to be perfectly honest my qualms about making task forces and giving them orders and putting up CAP are getting very, very thin. In fact that's the only defense of any kind I have. To me if he "goes off the reservation" I feel I must also. [:(] And we did say "no rules". It sounds like he might be taking me very literally. [:(][X(][8|]
The good news is that he seems to be feeling better. He seems to indicate that as soon as he gets his plan "just right" he'll send me the move. [&:] Oh, well. At least we'll be on with it. [:)]

RE: Off to see the lizard.....
I wouldn't worry about Saratoga. If I played an imbecile vacuous enough to go hunting for her on turn one, the game would last one turn.

So did I. But he was by no means an imbecile. I think he was mostly curious. And he did try it AFTER a successful PH strike.

I'm not sure who you're speaking of, but I'm referring to a guy (I don't think he's a part of the Forum) who pulled the stunt against Bullwinkle on December 7. I'd be so ashamed that I couldn't look in the mirror if I did that without first making it abundantly clear to my opponent that we were playing with no house rules and anything goes, no matter how gamey or impossible in real life.

Do any scenarios start with the whole US Fleet in San Diego? As they would have been, had FDR not re-based them.

I agree. Here MY situation. I say something , Geoff often see's what he wants. I was very specific about beta's and updates. I'd accept them , as long as we BOTH agree before and discuss them. Geoff hears NO BETA's. After several more attempts to get through to him (you can see them on his "1st blog" of this game). I tell him I'm willing to do anything he needs as far as updates (you'll see this on the same AAR) Geoff hears "No Updates". I sometimes feel I'm talking to a dog who hears me say "Blab, blab, blab" , when I'm saying "NO! NO! NO!). I can either say "screw it!" and walk away from this (which I'm loath to do mainly because of all the encouragement I've received on this AAR) or assume that he's going to take at my literal word, "No Rules". I've expanded on what I mean , explained what "gamey" is to me (if it feels gamey, don't do it). And somehow I get the impression that he hears "NO RULES". And if it does something "gamey" , and I call him on it , I'll get "NO RULES" thrown back in my face. It's not just my conscious here , it's also my reputation. If I wasn't concerned with people's opinions of me as a player , I'd say the hell with it , toss my misgivings in the dustbin and go on to kick his butt in the sneakiest was I can. And o God , I'm tempted. [:(]
In stead I think I'm going to replace Kimmel with Bellenger and implement some of his DEFENSIVE proposals . Then see what happens on the 1st turn. But I'm not completely happy with it. [:(]

I've been to that place (in Amarillo, Texas) during an epic 2012 family camping trip. We watched as a young Asian man took on the challenge. I don't think he made it. I don't think he came close to making it. And he didn't look like he was enjoying himself.

No. I so wish there were. I've revamped some to reflect that for AI purposes. (And a few others for research/experimental purposes , but nothing that I've gamed against a real player). Who'd want to do that , even for a short term (say 20-90 turns) ?[&:]

As to Geoff, I've never been able to figure out his humor. That's not on him; that's on me. I just don't get him. Occasionally he and I will get into some discussion with some banter, and then he'll snap off something sorta snarky...or I think it's snarky...or I wonder if it's snarky...or I wonder if it's his humor. Most of the guys on the Forum get his humor, so I know it's not him. He's probably living in a Kelly's Heroes or Saturday Night Live world while I'm living It's a Wonderful Life.

72 oz! GOD! I'm full on 6, and even in my young and skinny (and HUNGRY) days , I've never been able to finish 12. [:(]

True. But I'm starting to think the best I can do is take him at his word. Otherwise it's going to be a lonnnnng game. I'm not sure I can take 2 years or so of this playing "what does he really mean by that?" . It's too much like dating. There's a reason I've been married to the same woman for 35+ years. I no longer have to guess what she means (most of the time). [:D]

I have that same problem of crossing the 'snarky' line. I live in Monty Python's Flying Circus.ORIGINAL: Canoerebel
