RE: Port Moresby invaded!!
Strange composition of those ships at Ramree. It would suggest, that there is some landing going, but I am guessing this is just additional Aviation Support landing. Also, lack of CAP, and I have seen few times Airacobra D model (the same, Allies begin war with), can suggest, that there is shortage of fighters in pools. Press the issue.
Now, thinking of it... the main reason for Allies, to leave Rangoon in early war, is total Japan air domination, and inability of supply by sea. You should have not much trouble with supplying, and it is pretty hard to actually defeat entrenched, prepared forces (it took me a month, to take Bataan, in WITP, with half of bombers bombarding it daily, and heavy LCUs rotation). Also, if LCUs have nowhere to run, they get really small damages. Take a look for this example:
Ground combat at 88,50 (near Hwainan)
Allied Deliberate attack
Attacking force 21460 troops, 119 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 557
Defending force 11710 troops, 125 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 258
Allied adjusted assault: 477
Japanese adjusted defense: 102
Allied assault odds: 4 to 1
Combat modifiers
Defender: morale(-), experience(-)
Attacker:
Japanese ground losses:
200 casualties reported
Squads: 18 destroyed, 20 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 13 (3 destroyed, 10 disabled)
Units destroyed 1
Allied ground losses:
183 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 14 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Assaulting units:
48th Chinese Corps
90th Chinese Corps
92nd Chinese Corps
3rd Group Army
Defending units:
7th RGC Temp. Division
116th Division
5th RGC Route Brigade
12th RGC Ind. Brigade
and next 4 attacks went at 1:1. Assuming, that Japanese defenders do NOT BANZAI charge, you can be pretty safe, after being surrounded. I think it is posible to hold Rangoon, the main problem will be destroyed supply by air bombardment. That is of course an option, if you can hold there for monsoon (assuming monsoon HR apply for Rangoon), and if you can mount large counteroffensive afterwards.
I would like to point, that you are planning common German mistake - you are going to shorten your lines, which in turn, will shorten also enemy lines. Just look, how many units are there guarding LOCs, on Allies rear. There was hardly any Japanese defeat, and you have whole Empire for possible reinforcements. You should stay extended, and plan deep penetration attacks on several possible weak spots (you would have plenty of time for marching, during monsoon). Do not let them rest, because then, they will repair disabled weapons.
OH, and Andrew Brown have said few weeks ago, that he is making late-war map, but I do not know at what stage is the work.

Your land based fighters also did not launched. I am actually suspecting, that the higher you set planes, the less chance, that they will fly/find a target. In WITP I had DBs at max altitude, and they sortied around once a week, against some long-fogotten routed troops in jungle. When I have set them at 10k ft, they sortied everyday (but it could be actually, because weather have changed [:D]).ORIGINAL: PzB
The trial run with KB near Port Moresby provided some lessons; need to look at fleet organization again.
Japan now have so many carriers that it requires the entire Combined Surface Fleet to escort, support and protect them.
I'm considering fleets with smaller carrier TFs; Something like 3 carriers, 2 cruisers and 4 destroyers.
There will be separate ASW units moving ahead of the fleet together with a powerful surface combat group.
OH, and Andrew Brown have said few weeks ago, that he is making late-war map, but I do not know at what stage is the work.
RE: Port Moresby invaded!!
A few vehicles lost with the transports, hmmh, could be anything from reinforcements, over withdrawals or troops rotations. I doubt he'd use Ramree as a jump off point for amphib ops, which now should be aimed at the coast south of Moulmein. And would first require to neutralize or take Port Blair, which will have to happen earlier or later, if he want so go past Bangkok to Singapore. Alternatively, he could stop at Rangoon and just wage a landwar into Vietnam and China, but I doubt that Andy wouldn't use this theater to his max benefit instead. This theater seems to be his main effort, though I can't see how it will get him to the HI. Yet I have some suspicions...
I like inquisitors aggressive spirit, and must admit the idea of keeping Rangoon as a thorn in Andy's side sounds quite attractive. Surely worth a debate! Yet I am not so convinced that you would get a real chance to transfer forces there after or during monsoon again for serious counteroffensive. The allied divisions are simply much better equipped, for one. And the unresolved issue with easy nuking of supply in fortified urban hexes will be a burner. Also freeing probably a half a dozen or more IJA divisions for such counteroffensive might be hard, especially since Andy will likely now try to build up momentum in CENTPAC and SOPAC as well. Besides that, if I were Andy, I would just trap any remaining defenders with a couple of depleted divs in Rangoon and march on. That is assuming he thus far had no serious supply issues, and it doesn't seem so.
Whether to make a stand in the hex E of Toungoo, I don't know. Inqisitor is right, if you unite your forces, so can Andy do. But since he has the initiative now, he can do it anyway and just leave behind a small blocking force. So probably the only option is to unite and hold the hex north of Moulmein.
Although Burma has been a fruitful theater for Andy, aside from accidental blunders, and serves to bind a large fraction of LBA and IJA units, plus opens a chance for attrition as well as jump off points against locations in the DEI (the more, the further south he gets to Singapore, putting him sort of on the "interior lines"), it is a slow, long way from Rangoon via Bangkok to Singapore or Saigon. Didn't Cannorebel try a major effort towards china once, and took more than a year to get there?
It will hurt to loose ground there, especially since 4EB could reach the oil and resource centers, or the big ports and yards in the DEI, but it will not bring IJ down.
In fact, one benefit of that strategy would be that he could unite his "Burmese" offensive via Singapore, and a 2nd offensive launched from OZ via the eastern DEI (Koepang/Ambon Area, or NG) or via Bali and Java, in the region of southern Sumatra or western Borneo. That way he would have two mutually supporting efforts, divide the DEI, force you to garrison anything from Malaya to the southern Philippines and NG, and neuter your oil resources there. Hmmh, haven't thought of that before, but perhaps that was Andy's original plan until you stopped him at Waingapoo. Except for the problem that the route from Burma is so slow, and any move from OZ will be lightyears faster, this strategy would be in itself a nice, closed package!!? Again, won't win the war, but will rip IJ of valuable units, resources, cause heavy attrition and take away all initiative in this region.
Hopefully these thoughts will not distract you, PzB -- this is pure speculation, and Andy might have something totally different laid out for you. What you would need now would definitely be some aggressive recon to OZ, PM, Ceylon/Eastern India, and Pearl, to figure the location of his main naval and ground assets. Finding the locations of his staging areas could reveal a lot.

RE: Port Moresby invaded!!
I see Burma as to your advantage. If you can keep Andy "playing" here, then he isn't focused on where he could actually hurt you. Nothing in Burma is going to hurt you in March 1944. From a ground perspective, he's a long way from Canton, which is the nearest place on the continent that he can really hurt you from.
Having said that, if you can trade a weak div or two to keep him playing in Burma for another month ....
Having said that, if you can trade a weak div or two to keep him playing in Burma for another month ....

Rangoon is abandoned!
Hm, defending in clear or jungle hexes just doesn't do it in 1944.
Only forest, rough, mountain etc gives the defender the ability to stand and fight against superior Allied air.
I had launched numerous coordinated sweeps and attacks by air units in New Guinea before the KB arrived.
It was like all LBA cancelled their ops when their support was needed the most. Altitude was waried between 30k for sweeps, 15k for torpedo bombers and 9k for level bombers.
Not sure I need a late war map anymore [;)]
The convoy we destroyed was a supply convoy; by using amph type ships Andy can unload large amounts of supplies into a size 1 port fast.
Agree, we need to recon enemy main bases well in the weeks and months to come.
Our blocking unit (tank reg) near Ramree Isl is isolated but still receives supplies.
This is the main problem, an enemy army in the open receive their supplies while armies in base hexes are starved.
Last few turns both Rangoon and Pegu went red, tank division that had full supplies the turn before suddenly had 0!! [&:]
I had unloaded 250k supplies the last 6 weeks and everything just evaporated - and there hasn't been much fighting.
Had to desperately scrounge in new supply convoys and this turn we finally got supply to our Pegu army again.
Not sure what drains our supplies so badly, a large army and air fleet can survive on 50k supplies on Christmas Island for years and I've never seen a units supplies been sucked
out before.
This turn we abandoned Rangoon and Bassein; enemy troops duly took over the bases.
The next turn is interesting, will be back with more comments soon.

- Dwight D. Eisenhower
RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Look at this; the large Chink Corps cross the river east of Toungoo and shock attack our army there.
In rough jungle adjusted AV = 6400! [8D]
The Chink Corps destroyed itself...question is whether we should counterattack; more Allied units may follow next turn but the bulk is in Rangoon - Pegu area.
What do you think, passive or offensive?
With our blocking units in blace near Kathia and Ramree Island it should be difficult to build supplies at Rangoon efficiently.
So perhaps you're right Pax; we may still make something out of Burma.
We have ~8 divisions of fresh troops in Indo China and Malaya to support our troops in the front.
With KB at full strength an amph invasion isn't very tempting for Andy I guess. We received the CVL Nisshin yesterday, 28 knots and 30 ac.
So now we have some 1200 ac on carriers in total.

Ok, this may be the last time I hit the enemy armies north of Pegu, no reason to keep it up; has worked ok but is costly.

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Attack. If he follows with more units in the meantime they'll SHOCK ATTACK first ( with all the disruption that comes with crossing the river ) and then when you attack you'll be facing the very beat up units after they've taken huge losses and disruption. If no units follow you'll crucify that Chinese unit putting it out of the war for 1 to 2 months.
Win/win.
Win/win.

Well, that's that settled then.

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
We need another propaganda poster for the Hiva Ua "victory" [:D]
That's what I was in doubt about Nemo; need to re-read the rules regarding shock attacks when crossing river.
How many troops must Andy have in our hex to avoid another shock attack?
I think the Chink corps is out of the war for months anyway...fixing 1000 damaged squads will take a long time!
Peggy Sue
We're getting the first Peggy units into operational units.
I've trained the crews in a variety of skills; plan is to have units like this in small bases in combined search - naval bomber roles.
Mass production will first start with the Peggy (T) version that can carry torpedoes as well [8D]

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Mindanao
I'm convinced Mindanao will become a critical important defensive zone;
- It can intercept enemy invasions into the SRA and Luzon and act as a buffer zone.
By placing an Air Fleet HQ with range 5 in the middle of a size 9 base all the bases within the circle on the picture will receive support.
This is yet the best place to implement our mutually supporting fighter base concept, even Andy can't shut down all these bases.
I really plan to put a lot of fighters here when the time comes...for now we build, reinforce, stockpile and prepare.

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Mindanao, good concept -- if Andy takes the bait. So late in the war he must rush and he can't spend much time with the Philippines. If he runs into heavy resistance there, he might just bypass it.
The Chink Corps is badly mauled, but as long as it is damaged squads, it isn't all that terrible. Nemo is right, this would be a good opportunity for an counterassault. As far as I recall the latest rule change, no shock assault will be triggered on river crossings if at least 1/3 the number of the crossing forces will already be present. But disabled squads don't count toward that, do they?
How are you performing long range recon missions presently? Say from Rabaul, or the southern slot, you can reach most of the OZ West coast and down to Nomuea with the H6 and H8. Though using these large slow engine-eating monsters for recon is a bit wasteful, I have made good experiences with them. I usually swap out pilots (I otherwise train and use them for NAVSearch and ASW) via the reserve pools, or put the good ones in sqrn reserve, and then send them off for high-alt recon at 30%+, for a day per base. Not sure how many of those sqrns you have at hand, and can deploy for that task, but in recon they presently might be more important than any other role now.
Unfortunately Port Blair to Columbo is 22 hexes, if I recall correctly, so Ceylon it is just out of range for them. Yet Midway to the Hawai'ian bases should be possible, Rabaul and Tulagi would be spots to base them, as well as Koepang might give accesses to ports in northern OZ. But how to get at Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney, or even Wellington and the rest of NZ? Perhaps with a quick CS raid?

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Luzon will also be fortified; the idea is to make Mindanao into a big PITA and force Andy to do something about it - that is if he wants to revisit the PI's.
I was expecting more Allied troops to move east from Toungoo today; another poor Chinese 1/3 Corps crossed and shock attacked. Losses were extreme - as expected.
We don't have any CS's left; they have all been converted to light carriers.
Instead I use AVs; currently 3 have been deployed for recon roles.
- Our Irving recon planes have a range of 23 hexes, the Mavis and Emily search planes can reach 29 hexes.
So we continually recon Pearl Harbour from Line Islands, Noumea and Luganville from Guadalcanal, Brisbane and Townsville from bases south in the Coral Sea, Darwin and Northern Oz from the SRA.
The only black spots as mentioned are New Zealand, Perth, Melbourne and the US West Coast. Subs with search planes and AVs will recon these areas and try to pick up activity.
Tomorrow all our units in Pegu will have moved south to the hex north of Moulmein.
This will complete our evacuation of the Rangoon region.

Intel gathering
Enemy units are spreading out from Port Moresby; we have 3-4 forts in all bases with garrisons.
Let's delay them as long as possible.
Some activity along the US West Coast; especially interested in ships going north.

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Today we showed Andy that Rangoon is going to be vulnerable; the largest combined sweep so far in the war cleared the skies over Rangoon for our (inefficient) bombers.
If Japan had 4Es we would have won this war easily....
We also counterattacked the poor Chinese (according to Andy moved against our troops by mistake)and sent the sorry remnants back over the river in shreds!
Our army in Pego has moved south and all our supply problems have been solved [8|]
With 4000 AV in Moulmein it will be difficult for Andy to weaken his Pegu - Rangoon garrisons.
A large strategic reserve will now be established at Singapore.

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
so, Rangoon AF is already operational? (according to few enemy ac destroyed on the ground)
if not, gather all available ac and continue with attacks like this one [:)]. And prepare Navy - i see some enemy ships on pics attached.... you can suprise Andy while he is commited to Rangoon defense, i guess [;)]

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Singapore can be large repair yard at frontline, but it can not be operated under enemy air presence, because every repairing ship will be sunk. I think this whole operation had just Rangoon as target, and getting air superiority.ORIGINAL: PzB
So now, considering types of ships at Ramree, and number of Divisions in Burma, I would say it will be landing, but NOT in Malaya, but at Sumatra, to level Palembang, and cut half of oil deliveries. Allies can easily throw there 5 Burma Divisions, and still keep Burma in balance.
I would like also to point this thing:
And, as I have mentioned earlier, watch out on Kuriles. Have bases in Aleutians upgraded recently?Ground combat at 57,51 (near Toungoo)

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Hi Kresimir, good to see you here! [:)]
- Problem is that Allied AA guns are stronger than Jap medium bombers...
I simply don't have enough medium bombers to suppress Rangoon in the long run and the port is to small for large warships, so bombarding with DDs and CLs is out of the question.
Only minesweepers and MTBs there for now.
Take a look at how the Allied 4Es obliterated Milne Bay with a 1000 hits today.
Yes, Allies are low on supplies and it would have been problematic for Andy if we had stayed and fought..but the danger of being cut of or staying in clear hex ruled that out.
Checked bases around Anchorage last turn, very little activity but I will be sending more assets there to actively scout the region.
Sumatra has been prepared; the question is how to deploy our 8-10 reserve divisions for Malay, Burma, Indo-China, Sumatra and the SRA.
Currently I have placed a division at Rahaeng, a large brigade in Bangkok and Saigon, a division of troops at Tavoy and the base south of it.
1 division is at Victoria Point, another in the hex to the right of Victoria Point. 2 divisions are at Singapore (planning to move one to Medan as Sumatra reserve).
1,5 divisions are currently shipping into Malaya.
To have any effect we need to be able to ship 3-5 divisions for a quick counterattack.
- Still, Andy probably need to prepare his divisions for new targets and as mentioned already, he can't reduce his Burma armies too much since he's facing ~7000 AV of Jap troops in that region.
I've added a terrain overview today; had hoped that forest would provide better defensive value than jungle, but it's the same.
Andy will almost certainly launch his next attacks at targets without rough terrain.
What I'm mulling about is whether the hex north of Moulmein is the ideal place for our main army and what kind of unmodified AV should we place here?
The army east of Toungoo is ordered to march to Chiang Mai; this will take a month or so but that's ok - we can cancell the move if we decide we want to stay.

"The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without"
- Dwight D. Eisenhower
RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
According to rules Milne Bay is exactly OUT of supply range from PM (5 hexex x 20 points), so you can expect landing there any moment. I hope you have some ships in the area.ORIGINAL: PzB
Take a look at how the Allied 4Es obliterated Milne Bay with a 1000 hits today.
Allies will strike, where you are weak, so you should put mobile reserve somewhere, where they can reach any part of possible attacks. Also, you should make sure, that there will be no possibility of cutting of forces, because giving bases with forts build is total waste.Sumatra has been prepared; the question is how to deploy our 8-10 reserve divisions for Malay, Burma, Indo-China, Sumatra and the SRA.
The only worthy target in Burma was Rangoon, so if not all Divisions were planning for it, they can already be prepared for another step (whatever is the name of this island on the west).- Still, Andy probably need to prepare his divisions for new targets and as mentioned already, he can't reduce his Burma armies too much since he's facing ~7000 AV of Jap troops in that region.
Yup, base is hardly a right target for defense, because 4E will destroy all supply in one day. You should think about sending some forces north, to deal with Chinese east of Mandalay. They should be short on AT, so Tank Division can be good. What I'm mulling about is whether the hex north of Moulmein is the ideal place for our main army and what kind of unmodified AV should we place here?
I am actually do not expect serious attempt against Moulmein. Maybe if Andy can afford to send bombarding TF, but attack E, or NE is more possible, to cut of your remaining forces in north.
Interesting, that new P40N5 are destroyed in Combat Report, but there is none in the summary.Allied aircraft losses

P-39N1 Airacobra: 2 destroyed

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Not familiar with ground movement in Allied edition, but can Andy block your force in hex north of Moulmein if he:
a) move his troops to hex north of Moulmein
b) commit amphibious assault on Moulmein?
But i do agree with Inquisitor, you dont have to worry about further steamroller campaign in Burma. In fact that would be best option for you (trading land for time). I already mentioned how you can make a clear profit from Andy's overland campaign if he choose this option.
However, as far as i know him, he will try something else. In game against me he landed at VP IIRC and then in southern Malaya (where i managed to drove him into sea), and then in Sumatra. Anyway, as long as you keep Imperial Navy in this area you will be able to counter those amphibious operations.

RE: Rangoon is abandoned!
Probably right -- if within the next days Andy doesn't make a serious show of force north of Moulmein, he might just be satisfied with cleaning the rear and resting while detaching healthy units for other duties until monsoon is over. If I were him, my next targets would be Port Blair, followed by a landing at Victoria point, and depending on whether that would go well, either a transfer of the Burma Army to that point an driving E-NE to cut of Moulmein, or alternatively pushing from the latter south.
Any move against PB or VP, if it is to come before Rangoon's port is fixed, will likely come from NE India or Ceylon. With far away jump-off bases, there will be little warning where his next amphib OP will hit. The best defense is what you have been doing all along -- placing holding forces at strongpoint and reinforce on need with a reaction force. My suggestion would be holding this force ready at Singapore, with all the AP and AK at hand that are necessary. Perhaps I'd even occasionally perform "loading exercises", which might show on Andy's Intel and confuse him a little.
I'd even gamble at this point and reduce the force at Moulmein, Tavoy and Victoria Point at the risk of weakening front and flanks to send a few additional Divs to form a bigger reaction force. If Andy lands at VP, with KB cover or simply by RR you probably can still bring the reaction force to bear quick enough to throw him back. The catch is, if KB is busy here, a quick exploit from Darwin into the DEI, or in CentPac might become possible for Andy unopposed.
A landing in the Malaya or the Southern Sumatra - Western Borneo - Java triangle would at this point better be sustained from Perth than from India. Too dangerous and too far with KB intact, and Andy will only have enough CV/L/E to assist one amphibious operation at a time. In case of the SE DEI, there are so many LBA bases that his CV support will be necessary there for a couple of days or weeks before his LBA can fully take over convoy security as well -- see Waingapoo.
It would cause delays for anything out in NorPac or CentPac. And surely Andy won't have tons of Marine and US Army units sitting around idle... If he doesn't commit them to island hopping in the Solomons, with or without CV support, they must soon show elsewhere between Perth and Kiska. CV have been a no-show at PM, will therefore likely remain so for Milne bay -- under LBA cover anyway. So where is the bulk of his AP, APA,... CV and BB? And what would be the easiest target from NorPac to SoPac of some strategic benefit to hit first, merge the new CV fleet into a weapon, and perhaps even draw KB into an ambush? Guadalcanal? Midway? Line Islands? Aleutians? Guadalcanal can happen by suppression from PM, without CV. Midway and Line Islands bear greater long-term benefits than the others, and have the advantage of the safe LBA umbrella of Pearl. Plus, with them gone, your intel would also run dry. So I'd rather expect a blow there before anything else.
Late edits:
(1) Bummer, the railing of reinforcements from and to VP or Moulmein will of course only work of the late war map will be done it time -- there should have been a mention up there... Presently, you could only play a gamble with KB in readiness to cover the transport of a reaction force.
(2) Looking at the map again, I wouldn't land at VP. It is more vulnerable than other bases on the coast due to the close RR, and doesn't allow much better port facilities than... Mergui!?
