A must win game against a decent Austrian side. Rode their luck a bit, particularly in the first half apparently, but got the win they needed.ORIGINAL: warspite1

Two really strange sights this weekend so far.
The first in Malta where Ryan Bertrand obviously needs to work on his goal celebration routine.
And the second was Italy going to Madrid and welded to the idea of playing 4-2-4 against the Spanish. It was the master plan that the Italians were going to stick to come hell or high water. While they didn't get the high water that drenched out a lot of football in the east, they certainly got the hell. I suspect that hot water will follow...
Northern Ireland v Czech Republic looks like a tasty game on Monday. The Netherlands can do Sweden a big favour and England can do Scotland a favour...
Ireland didn't play well in Georgia and were lucky to get a draw. They need to play better against Serbia because you have to fancy Wales in Moldova.
Hungary v Portugal is on the box tonight. Quite looking forward to that game.
Best wishes,
Steve
PS: And Portugal struggle to beat the ten men and assorted elbows of Hungary 0-1. I am thinking bad karma for having the ugliest away strip seen this weekend....

Ahah. José never played in that position, but his father (Félix Mourinho) was one of the best Portuguese goalkeepers of his generation.

Its now getting to the sharp end....
Group A
I can't see who Sweden's last penultimate game is against, but the last game vs Holland is likely to be a decider for something. France may well have memories of Bulgaria (who could still get a play-off place) David Ginola and 1993.... squeaky bum time in that group.
Group B
Portugal vs Switzerland. With a superior goal difference for Portugal that is likely to be winner takes all.
Group C
Northern Ireland. What can you say? [&o]
Group D
I can't see all the fixtures but Wales vs Ireland will be massive. Serbia likely to have done enough for top spot unless the Irish can pull something out of the bag tonight.
Group F
England look to have done enough but Scotland are still in there scrapping. Two tough games to go but.....
Group I
Come on Iceland!!

Or as Pat Nevin put it on GMS today - 'we specialise in finding new ways to fail' - in this case, even if Scotland gets 2nd place (just about believable) its most likely they will be 9th in the 2nd place league - ie not included in the play offs. Still better than some recently dire (non)-qualifying campaigns

I haven't looked at it too closely, but with the action hotting up and nerves getting freyed, maybe they could still scrape in the top 8. After all, to get 2nd they will need to win those two games. Fingers crossed anyway

much too optimistic [:)] ... in the spirit of the two Johns (Knox and Calvin), its essential that we remember that hope and the Scotland football team is an experienced best mixed with jaw dropping despair

And that should be three points in the bank right? Lets ask France what they think.

What happened? The game started and the commentary in the opening 15 mins or so was that Man City were all over the place... I went out, came back and it was suddenly 5-0 [X(]

Sadio Mané got a red card at 1-0 (the experts tend to say it should have been a yellow not a red...), and then it all went downhill.
City was the better team today, but not to that extent.

That is a red card for sure. If that is only a yellow card then we can take away the red card from the referee. No point in having the red card if they don't use it for events such as this one. The "experts" who think this should have been a yellow card should be ashamed of themselves. Makes me wonder if they had a shadowy motive for saying it should have been a yellow card.ORIGINAL: terje439

A player is responsible for the result of his actions when he decides to play dangerously. I hope he gets suspended a very long time so that he can ponder on his actions. 15-20 matches perhaps. It might not have been intentional but it was just luck that it wasn't a severe injury on Edison. And I seriously doubt that he didn't see the keeper. He just tried to score with the foot because he saw the keeper and wanted to beat him to the ball. Shame on any punter who doesn't think this should be a red card! This behaviour has no place in football!
Have you seen the incident?
