CHECKPOINT SYNDROME by Liran Ron Furer

In late 2003, a new book appeared in Tel-Aviv. This book: "Checkpoint Syndrome", was written by a young Israeli who had just finished his National Service in the Israeli army. After he was trained, he was sent to serve on the checkpoints. When he finished his service, and was back as a civilian, he looked back on his life as a soldier at the checkpoints, and he wrote a story about his military service.

I think when HG Wells put this story into a book version he moved too far away from Jeff Wayne's brilliant musical. I can't recall a single ULLA!!!!! in Wells' deeply disappointed written version

Meh. I need to whittle my selections to get better stuff. Still reading it, maybe better the next few hundred pages.

Not sure why LoA will not publish Upton Sinclair in annotation, esp. Lanny Budd series.

I'm now reading Hugh Bicheno's Blood Royal which picks up where his other book Battle Royal leaves off.

I had thought that I had a good general understanding of the War of the Roses before I started to read his books. Boy was I wrong! That is a good thing! Acute labor shortages allowed otherwise indentured peasants to become free and contracted labor. English common law allowed women some rights, most notably the right to inherit property. An age of mailed males working out anger management issues and whose singular skill was weaponry. Unscrupulous and larcenous nobles using the royal stations to feather their own nests. Cades rebellion, lollards, influential and wealthy merchants of the Staple and so much more!

George R.R. Martin's works are impressive, but the real life story is so much better.

With the "shut down" limiting my Uni Library access to "we don't know when you can look at our stacks or borrow any more books again, go away" (and thus, cutting deeply now into my usual monthly reading habits),

I have been striving to find something interesting via the intertubes, and came across this advice from philobiblos's blog:

I found myself in a VAST collection of images (of books and their pages) from the Colonial America time frame, which you can look at and help transcribe (if so inclined) or just look about.

It was fascinating. I started to look for notes etc. about Indian wars / interaction, found a Zoology section (which my Dad would have loved, he taught Biology for 40 years), and then found my way into a "Music" section. Aaaaaaas a classically trained musician (I can play about 8 instruments, but only the flute well) I thought, "Wow, I might be good at that part."

Lo and behold, I then spent an hour or two just studying a musical manuscript from 1715: a copy of a Portugese version of the classic Christmas hymn "Adeste Fidelis"

Absolutely fascinating.
