I just read a report that less than 10% of American citizens can drive one. While that seems a little low to me, I can't deny that the last time I lived in DC , a young local tried to "Jack a Porshe" from the young girl driving. Once he realized that he didn't know how to drive it, he abandoned it (to the young girl with more guts than me, she laughed at him!) The police caught him a couple of blocks later when he jumped on a bus.

I truly find it amazing that so few of my countrymen are not interested in one of the few things that can make driving FUN! [:(][&:][X(]

Driver education in the early 1960's went exclusively to automatic transmissions. All us rental car companies do automatics, and unless your in a really big city , standards are much more difficult to purchase. Sports cars and jeeps are the exception. But even most pickup trucks are automatics. I find that I'm more "in tune" with my car if I'm driving a standard. You need to think ahead , and I find most drivers don't want to think at all , when it means you can't hold a cell phone, text, or screw around with CD's MP3's etc.

I did have a little bit of difficulty driving a stick in the UK, but that was simply because I'm used to shifting with my right hand rather than my left. But with practice all things are possible. [:D]

I refuse to own a car that is not a manual. The first car I learned to drive was a manual, an old Volkswagen Bug, with the tiny brakelights. Loved that car!

The last manual transmission car I owned was a 1992 Toyota Supra. Got it as an atmospheric but later converted it into a turbo with a kit from HKS. Thing was a beast, and had a propensity to blow head gaskets like you wouldn't believe, even before the modifications. Fixed that with metal gaskets. Blah blah blah...[:D]

I've always wished that the German style of driving instruction was used here in the States, though I'm sure that some here would belly-ache over the cost, length, and seriousness of instruction. Many here know how to operate a motor vehicle, but sure as hell do not know how to drive.

From the article I read, they are saying - after a 3 year long investigation - that there is no evidence that drinking water prevents dehydration. They mention that dehydration can have a cause that drinking water would not alleviate.

While that last bit is strictly true, it's mindless bureaucracy. Lots of people get dehydrated from not drinking adequate liquids, and drinking water sure prevents dehydration from that cause!

So instead of saying something like "don't claim it prevents all cases of dehydration" or some such, they instead provide for 2 years in prison if the bottlers claim that drinking water can prevent dehydration. [8|]
