The way I think about it, there are many adjustments to AV. If the unit makes a good leadership roll (+), if it makes a bad leadership roll (-), if it is in between, no adjustment. Same for any HQ units associated with the unit. I don't see those as directly depending on the enemy. Some things, like terrain or shock, only affect one side. Enemy action affects many things, such as disruption, even during a combat resolution. Leadership, experience, maybe some others I figure can affect both sides independently.

interesting take on it, then an obviously good CO could conceivably bungle. I just relieved an SBD CO with an aggression of (22) for not attacking
240nm out on a spotted IJN TF just offshore of Arorae. I wanted to transfer his arse to Nome.[:D]

I have seen leaders with high ratings get a (-) for that rating, so I know it's all down to die rolls. Better numbers = more often getting better die rolls. 22 aggression is not enough to attack carriers! [:D]

Michael explained that even if the Division/TF leader has good stats, there can be a (-) for individual leaders in the sub groups/ships. Since reading that I give good leaders to my regiments that are going to combine into a Division. Costs a lot in PP but the Divisions always seem to fight well.

I think you misinterpreted that a bit. A combined division has only one leader. He was referring to the HQs that are within range and might contribute to the combat, plus if there are multiple units in combat hex each of them gets its own die roll.

Not totally convinced I got it wrong yet, because after combining it again you can split it into A/B/C thirds and each will have its own leader. I think those leaders are there when the Division is first formed, not assigned when you split it again. Will have to experiment next time I form a Division from Regiments.

I do agree that other units and HQs are part of the possible reasons for modifiers - but as Zuluhour said - it's under the hood so we don't really know which modifiers came from which units. All we can do is try to stack the odds in our favour where possible. Wolverines seem to qualify as an ace up the sleeve ... [:)]

Mostly I don't. The TF you see way up north might be a sub or one that I didn't route carefully enough. Most TFs coming from the West Coast are getting a way point between Hawaii and Midway with orders to return the same way. The Philippine Sea is definitely no-go except for the corridor to Iwo Jima. I got really lucky trapping and blockading so much IJN strength!

Our troops must rest, but the exchange was heavily in their favor as far as casualties affecting future odds. The armour is catching up at the rate of 1 inch per day. The Sabang invasion will move to one hex from target tomorrow, D-Day the day after. Imperial air strikes ceased at Hanoi today as massive numbers of troops and engineers pulled into the city. Armor and infantry are forming up to cross the river to the NE. The engineers are largely moving to Haiphong for rapid building there while the combat engineering units build Hanoi and sit out the river crossing. Hanoi and Haiphong are both building fortifications to level 3 to guard against spoiling attacks before expanding the airfields (both already size 3).

The IJN took advantage of the withdrawal for replenishment of the USN and bad weather which grounded strike aircraft at Kuching. The latter fact shielded the light cruisers still offshore at Singkawang! Despite that our troops are in good enough shape to continue, with 15% disruption. Normally that would warrant a rest, but there is no real opposition. At Ternate our troops are not even breathing hard.

The great New Guinea - Marianas shuffle continues. Some CV have moved into port at Truk for minor repairs.

What does this mean? A shootout on the surface? Dud torpedoes? Subs hit the anchor chains, pulled up the anchor and caused Furutaka to drift into a tanker? [:D]

Sadly, it means 4 torpedoes missed and the sub was not detected - they didn't even frighten a lookout!!! [:D]

After tomorrow the armor and infantry charged with the river crossing NE of Hanoi will move out (the remainder of the armor assigned will arrive tomorrow). 3 units and more than 6k troops oppose them. Hanoi has most of the air support it needs and more will arrive before the river crossing. Haiphong airfield is fully supported. In addition to recon, we have 32x Thunderbolt I between the two, 100x P-47D at Hanoi (132 front line fighters for defense and escort), 75x P-47D25 and 50x P-51B at Haiphong. Those are capable of reaching Canton and Hong Kong in regular range with drop tanks and will be the sweepers. Most are resting to repair planes and recover morale from extended operations. Current recon shows 100x fighters at Canton and 44x fighters at Hong Kong.

Infantry has also begun arriving at Haiphong for the river crossing to the E. There is one more division boarding trains at Vinh.
