Some 330 Jap vs 36 Allied ac were lost today. If there's only one reason to play WitP with mods...

Operation Weeding out Weda

A somewhat dangerous mission has been planned for tomorrow: I will try to hurt Andy's
supply base at Weda. With hundreds of ships and ac there are ample opportunities to inflict carnage [:D]
We depend on 3 things:

1. Enemy fighters are worn out/and or busy LRCAP'ing convoys.
2. Our fighters perform the ordered sweep.
3. Our bombers take of in force, and not in dribs and drabs.

It can't be more dangerous than challenging enemy Uber CAP'ed TFs.
Perhaps Andy doesn't suspect anything 'as crazy' as this!

Can imagine the list of 'ifs' happening the other way around [:'(]
Desperate situations require desperate measures [&o]

Perhaps he is moving PTs to his frontier bases - to reach them PTs needs "refueling ship" AK, DD or something - could it be that is the reason why Kamis attacked PTs? Or this is game design (to attack PT flotilla?)

As for your operation, idea sounds good. But be careful - even if there is no many enemy fighers on CAP duty, radar will help (scramble) and enemy defence will be strong i suspect. Plan could work if he doesn't have lot's of fighers at the base.

But you are right, it can't be more dangerous than facing with UberCAP... so, why not?[;)]

Didn't the americans disguise a few PT boats or small subchasers as CVE's to lure kamis to attack them? IIRC there was a "What is this" thread about one a while ago.

Ofcourse, this doesn't excuse such behaviour from the game engine.. but one can always imagine

I'm just interested what is happening - it is better to learn on someone else game than in your own[;)]. I have no opinion about it. (although i think that issues like 38K kamis and uber cap can be easily fixed with new coding - how about 10-20 or whatever percent possibility that some of kamis will get through?)

Air and surface engagements!

Post by PzB74 »

Our raid was a strategic success, although a costly one!
We are hitting the enemy, disrupting his build up and movement of troops
and supplies.

Our surface group from Soerabaja was spotted and bombed by enemy SBDs from
Balikpapan. They escaped serious damage, but I had to take a difficult decision!
Should we push on with the attack and attempt to hurt the enemy?

A compromise was reached: 2 destroyers and our 3 precious heavy cruisers turned
around while 8 destroyers headed for the hex just East of Balikpapan. The reasoning
is that Andy after having observed our ships will avoid moving to Balik for another
day.

Andy offered to withdraw his PT boats that are attracting kamikaze attacks. They're
out of fuel... I told him to be my guest [;)] PT boats should be off limit targets to
anything but strafing fighters.

for another upgrade in 12/44! [:)]

I'm getting good at intercepting Andy's convoys at night [8D]
Imagine my glee as our 8 destroyers surprised the huge enemy convoy and
savaged the escorts. Unfortunately we didn't hit the transports, but we're still
punishing the enemy, and that's what count now - even though it comes at a price... [&o]

RE: Air and surface engagements!

Post by PzB74 »

Here's an incredible story:

After being hit by 9 1000lb bombs the heavy cruiser Takao was reported scuttled.
This was not all true as it was her sister the Atago that was scuttled after being
hit by 11 1000lb bombs and a torpedo. The Takao lumbered into Tawi Tawi with 99 sys
damage, 16 fires and 75 flood. The fires were put out but the flood was not contained,
so I rushed a repair ship in from Shanghai, and this tipped the scales. The Takao has
now some 45 flooding and should make it.

Incredible but true II:

The light cruiser that was damaged in a surface action and hit by no less than 3 enemy
torpedoes also made it to Tawi Tawi and is no longer in danger of sinking [&o]

Top Ace

I have prepared a couple of surprises for Andy tomorrow:

1. 4 supply transports are arriving at Benjarmasan west of Balikpapan tomorrow.
160 of our fighters have moved in to protect the ships. There are ample support
in the base now as all the units that retreated from Balik have arrived. Hopefully
we can savage the enemy bombers and fighters.

Our top ace Warrant Officer J. Obayashi, 20 kills, in the crack F2/6th Daitai flying the 'George'
are among the defenders.

2. Enemy transports are unloading at Samarinda. I don't think there are too many fighters on CAP.
60 of our fighters will sweep the place from Tarakan before 100 bombers and 60 fighters from Brunei
will attack the ships.

Let's see what can be achieved [8D]

Just found out that no more kamikaze units are becoming available for conversion.
This is most likely because we kicked the Allies out of Zamboanga and the southernly
bases on Borneo are more than 14 hexes away from the 'trigger' bases of Saigon, Takao etc.

So we only got 7 units to conver left.

Aces 2

As you can see our top ace didn't even take off today. Perhaps that's why
he has survived 221 missions: he only takes off when the Tie Advance stays home [8|]
Only 2-3 of the pilots that took of today returned....

Even if we plan and execute missions perfectly, we're robbed for success by Corsairs
and air routines that refuse to cooperate. I understand that not many Jap players are going
to finish the stock 15 Scenario. It can be such a frustration at times that you almost climb
into the kamikaze ac yourself

How do I get the "PzB IJN Damage Control Option" as the Japs? [:D]
ORIGINAL: PzB

I think high exp ships and the advantage of fighting on home turf close to friendly ports is vital Denisonh [:)]
Still amazed that these 2 cruisers could stay afloat after taking such a punishment. 3 torpedoes is enough to sink
a battleship....

I just put the Randy fighter bomber in production, 100 units. Will replace my Lily light bomber formations. Strangely
enough production date showed 07/44? Did this happen without me noticing it, or was it pushed forward? It's a while since I stopped producing Lily's, so I converted some Frank factories. The Randy uses Mitsubishi engines which is more numerous in stock.

Theoretical this fighter should almost be a match for the lightning. It carries 2x250 lb bombs, 20 and 30mm cannons and is sturdy and as manouverable as the Frank.

Let me guess: It will be shot down in droves by enemy fighters [8|]
Still, does anyone have any experience with Randys? Think I will use it as a bomber interceptor as I got numerous 80 exp Lily
units to convert.

Only as bomber interceptor. It's not maneuverable and it's not fast. It's sturdy as you said and keep it behind the front lines and go dragon hunting!

I've been using Lilys for ASW duties for quite some time...80 exp bomber interceptors
will come in handy one day! [:)]

Relatively quiet, Andy must be planning something really bad.
Hainan has now been reinforced with 2 full divisions and Formosa is a veritable fortress.
I'm also moving troops into Indo China and preparing a defense of Malaya and Northern Borneo.
With massive fortifications, it will require a massive effort to capure any sizeable base in the region.

Still quiet - except from the daily pounding from the air!
Most air activity finds place in Southern Borneo and south of the Philippines.
We're in a transition phase awaiting Andy's next major assault which will take
him further north, one way or the other.

I'm not so worried about were he will strike anymore. The last couple of months have
given me the chance to redeploy our defenses without being interupted. No matter were
Andy invades, we're ready to fight, delay and cause attrition to the enemy. The end of
the war is actually not so far away anymore.

I'm studying the terrain and trying to determine were we should make our stand in China/Kwantung,
Burma, Malaya, Formosa, the Philippines and even...Japan!

Our air force is again gaining strength and is able to field an increasing amount of modern interceptors.
The Sally, Helen and Lily bombers have been phased out and Peggy medium bombers and Randy light bombers/fb-interceptors
will replace them.

The KB is slowly bein repaired and in a couple of months we should be able to field a carrier fleet again.
The Last Command! [&o] Our surface fleet is still intact and remains a serious threat to any enemy invasion.

The major 'resource haul' is providing results and large amount of resources and crude continues to flow back
to Japan. In 14 days we'll make up stock (still awaiting some major convoys).

Lots of shipping moving around south of Wasile, something is probably in the kettle.
I'm upgrading most of my destroyers as they receive a pretty decent radar and AA suit
at this stage of the war. More hesistant about upgrading my battleships and cruisers as my
repair capacity is a bit stretched - and they may take forever to repair.

Mitsubishi Ki-67 "Flying Dragon" codename “Peggy”

First encountered during the furious air-sea battle fought off Formosa in 1944, the Allies identified it as a new Naval type. However, downed examples in China and captured planes in the Philippines revealed its true identity. This was the Mitsubishi Ki-67 Hiryu "Flying Dragon" that resembled the G4M Betty put on a slimming diet. Designed by Mitsubishi Chief Engineer Ozawa Kyonosuke and his team in response to a 1941 Japanese Army specification requesting a high-speed heavy bomber the Ki-67 not only met the speed requirement she did so while achieving the maneuverability of a fighter. In addition, it also sported armor and self-sealing fuel tanks and was perhaps one of the best all around bombers produced by Japanese during the Pacific War.
Late in 1940, even as Nakajima’s Ki-49 Donryu was undergoing testing, the Army Air Staff was drafting specifications for her future successor. Mitsubishi was therefore instructed to build three prototypes. Ozawa’s team designed a clean, slender mid-wing monoplane powered by a pair of 1,900-hp Ha-104s. To ease production, the Ki-67 was designed to be constructed from sub-assemblies right from the start. Without a bomb load of any kind, the Hiryu could easily loop, its turning radius often exceeded some fighter designs, and its controls remained smooth and effective even in dives of up to 373 mph. It compared favorably with Allied contemporaries, but despite its official classification by the JAAF as a heavy bomber, it was more in the class of the American B-26 Marauder.
The type was considered to be both easy to fly and amazingly maneuverable. This performance inspired the development of the type into a heavy fighter (the Ki-109), which in addition to more powerful turbocharged engines, would have a hand loaded 75mm cannon and 15 rounds of ammunition in a solid nose [X(]. Unfortunately (or fortunately if you were a B-29 crewman) the more powerful engines were not available and the Ki-109 was equipped with standard engines, which would not allow the aircraft to reach sufficient altitude to attack the Superfortresses.
The development of the Ki-67 “Peggy” was chaotic at best. The potential of the plane was so promising that the Army asked for too many versions and tests so that it took until October of 1944 for the plane to enter service. It served mainly in torpedo missions I ALSO WANT THAT! [8|] against the US armada heading towards Japan. It also conducted several raids against B-29 bases in the Mariannas. A remarkable heavy bomber: it was not only the best in its category in wartime Japan, but its maneuverability was such that it could outshine purebread fighters. When the war ended and production ceased 727 examples of the “Peggy” had been manufactured.

Matrix pls read -> Somewhat unusually (given their inter-service rivalry), the Ki-67 was used by both the Japanese Army and Navy.

Of course I don't get torpedoes, 57 mm guns or heavy fighter verrsion of the Peggy....3x500 kg bombs is all Matrix gave me! Buhu [:'(]
