The remains of my IO Expedition are about to make landfall at Sabang and Dan has spread of group of SS across my path.  Neither of my CVL have any flooding so I divert them southwards to the .dot base on the west coast of Sumatra to rendezvous with an AO.

I have shifted all the aircraft at Sabang to ASW and have been rewarded with an S-Boat getting hit as well as O24 getting heavily damaged by one of my two ASW TF operating in the area.  Maybe I can bag a sub or two...

I see that incompetant Captain Ai transferred to Adm. Nagumo's staff right before he sailed for the IO. Poor Nagumo made the same mistake all his predessors did by assigning him the job as fleet logistics officer. He probably thought, "How much damage can this piece of driftwood do as Logistics Officer". I think Capt. Ai must be related to the Imperial family some how; otherwise he would have "fallen overboard" after one of his well orchestrated fiascos. Sadly, he just keeps getting transferred from command to command to perpectuate the problem. I have heard rumors though that Captain Ai has been reassigned to Admiral Ae's training command. It is hoped that in a few months, he will have learned the errors of his ways and will be redeployed to the fleet as a competant and effective Logistics Officer. We will have to wait and see.

A little know fact is that one of Captain Ai's cousins emigrated to the US in the 1920's and, I know this is too unbeleivable to give credance too, he actually serves in the same exact capacity with the Us Navy.

Unfortunately, you were hit by a 'perfect storm' combination.

He outnumbered your escort by a little better than 2:1, had 'over' 50 planes, had some good planes (I haven't noted P-38's being uber-killers in your game before)...and most of all - I think you got zapped by game 'die rolls'.

I have seen a pattern in air combat during lots of testing witp, every 10 or so air combats - you just get a real stinker. You were just unlucky to get the 'jinx' at one of the worst possible times and conditions for you...

The Japanese Strike is a balanced 27 Zero, 33 Val, and 25 kate. The British put up 38 Seafire, 11 Hurricane, and (as I feared) 7 P-38. My Zeros do pretty well against the Seafire and Hurricanes but the P-38s rip them to shreds. The Escort collapses (17 shot down) and the bombers are then ripped apart. ALL the Vals are shot down as well as 19 of the 25 Kates. UBER-CAP has been eliminated???

Well this has happened now twice in the campaign.  I saw similar results in the big attack along the Canadian Coast a year ago.

I'm not surprised - like I said, it's a pattern I've seen in the game engine that is all but impossible to tame.[:(]

KTNJR--This is exactly what I am doing.  I want to do a screenshot of all the convoys moving around to show the vast number of Japanese soldiers and support personnel going to new homes!  I had hoped to stage a raid with my CVEs NE of Christmas Isle but after the IO Disaster, I called them back.

I looked at my fleet building and saw that I was incorrect with what will be commissioned within the next 45 days.  I will have 2 CV and 1 CVL.  Shortly after that will be another CVL and the 2 BB Hybrids.  These additions will more then make-up for my IO losses.

The 2 CVLs are almost to Batavia and then they will go to the Home Islands.  In reality I lose 2 CV with 102 planes.  Both fighters squadrons bingo's over to the CVLs and they should be useful.

My new ASW PG/PC are starting to come online and that will start to help with the Allied SS.

Dan's play style is unpredictable.  I would normally expect a player this far down this late in the war to nibble along the edge of the perimeter; however, he certainly didn't do that when he tried for Wotje!  I think he will try to bypass the Outer Perimeter and try to punch somewhere in the middle like Wake, Marcus, or even Truk.  I'm not sure...

End of June 1943

Post by John 3rd »

Good Morning all.

After a stressful weekend, I return to getting turns done with Dan and throwing my thoughts onto the Forum regarding the Campaign.  I noticed that Dan has some sort of Operation Blue Planet or something like that as a title on his AAR right now.  Appears that he is--perhaps--launching an operation.

We just completed the June 25th turn and things have settled into a pattern:

North Pacific
Calm and quiet.  I have a force of 8 I-Boats operating out of Dutch Harbor.  They are scoring the occasional success in hitting his shipping along the Canadian/US border.

Central Pacific
Midway  I have pulled one of the two Brigades from here and am redelpoying it to Marcus.  I expect that Dan will note this and--perhaps--attack the atoll.  That would be good.  It still has an AS of 400, Forts at 9, a CD unit, and 10,000 mines.  It will take a bit for him to grab it and that buys me more time.  I do not plan to fight for it.

The Marshalls  Just had a large supply convoy unload at Kwajalein, Maleolap, Wotje, and Tarawa bringing all these bases to at least 20,000+ supply.  Everything is solid here.  The majority of the Combined Fleet still sits at anchor in Kwajalein.

Marcus  Lots of engineers building things up here and 2 Brigades now digging in.

The Marianas  Same description as Marcus except there are several HQ units and I am moving Combined Fleet from Noumea to Saipan.  At least one Brigade now garrisions each island with more on the way.

South Pacific
I have ended my troop pullout of Pago-Pago, Papaete, and surrouding islands.  The reamining garrisions stay as they are.  All are reasonably well-supplied...

Have buttressed Noumea and Suva some to hold the very southern end of the Perimeter.

Australia
Dan has FINALLY begun moving here.  I have evacuated Port Kembla and Albury and am falling back to my 1st Major Line of Resistance (MLR)--Adeladie, Broken Hill, and Brisbane.  They are all stocked and have size 9 Forts.  It will be a fighting withdrawal like Italy during the real war.  Would like to hold out NW Australia through Jan 1944 here if possible.  We'll see...

I have dropped this massive army from its high of 12 Infantry/Tank Divisions down to about 5 Divisions.

DEI
Holding and moving as much supply and oil as possible.

Burma
Have withdrawn over 2,500 AS from Rangoon and moved them to Moulmein, Bangkok, and Hanoi.  Dan has moved 3 Chinese units down to threaten Pisanlouke.  Doesn't worry me and I am using it as a training area for 200 fighters and 200 bombers.

China
Moving troops to threaten if not take Yenen and will then attack southern China as described earlier in the AAR.  There has been more air action here as Dan has moved some fighter and B-25 groups into this theatre.

Strategic Thinking
I have decided on a completely different strategy for me.  I am going to LET Dan move on whatever target he decides.  Once he is ashore, THEN I will attack with Surface TF, LBA, and--finally--my CVs.  It is my hope to find his target, be able to hold it, and then wear him down so he has to abandon it just like Wotje.  This is my thinking for the moment...

Aerial Status of Rangoon

Post by John 3rd »

When I wrote my detailed description of Dan's last attempt to clear the air over Rangoon, I had posted the number of kills for my Aces that fly the skies there.  I thought--after the latest aerial victory--to update that list.

There are almost always ships at Rangoon or Moulmein.  Periodically Dan's bomber crews raise their morale high to enough to launch an attack.  This event occurred on June 26th over Rangoon.  I had my normal CAP of 125 Tony and 50 Zero flying when in came a strike of 16 P-38, 8 Hurricanes, 4 Spitfire and 5 Wellington.  They were angling for the harbor where a convoy of 8 AK were unloading.  The Japanese continued to demonstrate their superiority again in that they shot down ALL planes save one Wellington!  The Japanese lost 2 Zero and 14 Tony (but only 7 pilots) in exchange for 33 Allied aircraft!  How about that?

I have been moving my Daitai and Sentai around to keep experience solid so these are the current leaders among the Army and navy at Rangoon:

Major Kamito of the 11th Fighter Sentai with 13 Kills
Lt. Ibusuki of the F1-Yamada Daitai with 12 Kills
PO2 Hagahama of F2-Ominato Daitai with 15 Kills

The Navy's Zero pilots are still doing well but watch out for those hot shot Tony pilots!

RE: Aerial Status of Rangoon

Post by John 3rd »

We had another aerial melee over Rangoon on June 29th and the IJA/IJN pilots kicked some butt!  Dan sent in two major raids with NO fighter cover.  The raids met 46 Zero and 102 Tony in the air flying CAP.

Raid 1:  27 Wellington/32 LB-30 lose all 27 Brit Bombers and 9 (14 Damaged) LB-30 for 4 Zero and 5 Tony
Raid 2:  12 Wellington/73 Liberator (SCARY!) lose 12 Wellington and 24 Liberator (25 more damaged) for 4 Zero, 9 Tony, and 2 Recon planes on the ground.

Of my 22 plane losses only I only lost SEVEN pilots!  This makes for a total of 72 A-t-A loses for the Allies to only the 22 Japanese.  This is OVER 3-1!  End of June 1943 now...

China/Vietnam Offensive
My southern China offensive will get off the ground within 2 weeks or so.  I have a massive concentration building around Canton.  It appears that Dan has not seen it.  I can't believe that but 3 HQ, 15 Inf Div, 4 Art Brig, and 2 Eng Reg are getting ready to go.  Will probably order them out on about July 15th.

I intend to make a demonstration out of Hanoi/Haiphong to get Dan to cross into Vietnam.  Since my failed Rangoon attack, reinforcements have steadily streamed towards this destination.  I now have 5 Inf Div and 6-8 support units present.  The 1st Armored Division will arrive within the week and another Inf Division follows that.

I am trying to be a little sneaky and MAKE Hanoi look weak by moving forces into Haiphong.  It is a non-malarial hex and my units a regaining any lost strength by sitting there.  Both hexes have Size 9 Forts and I have decent air strength at Hanoi.  If Dan does come this way then I should be OK with good supplies, about 3,000 AS, and high Forts.

Pacific
Very quiet right now.  I have picked up activity around Laysen SE of Midway.  Dan recons Midway everyday and I expect him to have picked up my pullout.  If he attacks then that is good.  I won't fight but the units there will certainly cause some mischief with whatever lands.  The island still has about 400 AS at Size 9 Forts.

ASW
Just formed my 2nd ASW TF using the new PG/PC the Japanese get.  A standard 7 ship ASW TF has about 33-40 ASW Strength to it.  This will only get better as I rush more to completion.

Just finished June 1943 and will post the July 1, 1943 Industrial/VP Report sometime today.

New Thoughts

Post by John 3rd »

Dan and I got in a few turns today and I neglected in my earlier update to mention a Fleet Movement that I am doing.  Since I have decided to NOT make a fight of his next move (I figure Midway), I have tried to put myself into his shoes and figure out what I would be doing...

My eyes keep coming back to Australia as I fallback to my 1st real defensive line of Newcastle--Broken Hill--Adelaide.  To gain any sort of momentum, the Allies must bring in supplies and fuel.  I have had Glen-SS and other ships blocking (or at least TRYING to block) his transporting of convoys from Panama to NZ and on to Australia.  There are enough troops in NZ and Aussieland to make my life...interesting...and for that to happen, we must see shipping moving east to west.

I am going to use some fuel and attempt to get some sinkings.  On July 1st, a CV TF of FIVE carriers departed Kwajalein for Suva.  My fastest carriers have been selected for this duty:  the new Taiho will get some (potentially) combat operations plus the veteran Hiryu/Soryu and Shokaku/Zuikaku.  Papaete guards the eastern door and I have ordered 63 Betty there to 70% naval search at 20 hexes.  I should get warning of anything coming down from Pearl or emerging from the Panama shipping canal.

Perhaps I can get lucky and crush a convoy or two or three...

I consider this a fairly safe move as it appears fairly certain that Dan is gathering all his forces in Hawaii.  If he moves on Midway, I will continue my operation in the south until he wipes out my troops there.  At that point I will recall the CVs to Saipan or Kwajalein and prepare to meet him in the Decisive Battle.

The Fleet will be bolstered by numerous new CV/CVL as well as the BB Hybrids.

HUGE drop in both of these stockpiles as my new units were created. My vehicles dropped by nearly 3,000! To answer a reader question, those new Infantry Divisions arrive nearly fully built without a lot of need for expansion and/or completion.

John, I JUST received the exact same reinforcements at 6/15, and it cost me exactly 24,000 Armament points; much less than you would expect for almost 10 divisions worth of troops. They seem to have cost almost exactly the Load Cost on the Reinforcement Screen, like 950 or so for a division.

Topsy 20 (25)

Am about to shut down Topsy or Tabby. Does anyone have a preference as to which should go?

Not even close, TABBY. She has better range, and much greater capacity. There is no downside to the TABBY.

Not sure how the Japanese figured out how to make a better DC-3 than us, but they did in WITP.

Q-Ball thanks for the copy on this.  I will shut off my Topsy line and change it over to researching another fighter.

I was surprised at how well I weathered the armament and vehicle hit with all those new units.  It was good to see that I actually PLANNED for something that worked out.

Hanoi  I just noticed a large stack of troops moving towards the Vietnam border.  Wonder if Dan is planning to attack here finally?  The 1st Armored Division is about 3-4 days from Hanoi and that should help raise its strength.  I checked earlier and--at the moment--Hanoi has 800 AS and Haiphong is about the same.  The armored division packs 350 by itself and I have two more Tank Regiments as well as an Infantry Brigade on the way.

John,
I'm glad to see you post your monthly report. Since it seems one and/or both my PBEMs games are on hold, I've started my first game against the AI using Big B's mod as Japan. [X(]  I may send you a PM about it as I need more info on which ships to accelerate or not. There was a good post by Nemo about this topic about a month or two back that I wish I had copied and pasted. [:(] Any advice about ships and Japanese economy you can sedn me would be appreciated. Nakajima 1,268(31)—Need 1,146---0 in Pool

Hi John, I started your AAR today (took all day to get this far). Very interesting and entertaining. I see you're into 1943 when the Allied production kicks in. Notice how his air force just continues to grow and grow regardless of how much you destroy. Sorry to say, but it'll only get worse. [:(]

I've kept track of some of your production figures. Note that your Nakajima engine production is about 120 greater than the demand, yet you have none in the pool. I suspect that your actual production is far less than the 1268. Your total production is eating up your HI production and then some. I suggest you reduce some production to allow your HI pool to increase. I think that, during the production portion of the turn, your HI pool drops low enough that certain production events can't happen due to the shortage of HI points. As the computer checks individual factories for production, if there are not enough HI points to allow that factory to produce, the factory does not produce at all. As a start, I'd attempt to build the HI pool to about 5x your daily production, or about 75k in the pool. This will ensure you have enough HI to do everything you want to do. Just a thought.....

Keep up the great work!

Mike

By the way, you'll just love the Jack (and your opponent will just hate it). [:D]

Tough to decide without some additional info. They're for Army and Navy respectively, so it depends on your need and current deployment of them. Just looking at the numbers, the obvious choice is to shut down the Tabby. When you total all the Army vs. Navy transports in the pool you get 50 and 147 respectively. That encourages shutting down the Tabbys even more. I recommend taking the time to see how many of each type you have deployed and how many you are short and then go from there.

Mike,
Thanks for jumping in.  How would you advice me cutting back so I can build up my HI?  Are there areas that can be shutdown or changed to really help here?

I have decided to scale back my transport production.  I switched half of Tabby over to A6M5 research and shut down the Topsy.

I would really welcome any advice you might have regarding HI and the economy.  I think I do OK but KNOW I could better!

Mr. Benoit!  Haven't gotten a note from you in a while.  Hope things are well with you and you're not working too hard.  Shoot me a note and I'll give my suggestions.  As for ship-building I think you can follow that with my Economy Reports.  If you have questions from the beginning of the campaign (since I started this AAR six month sin...) just ask.
