I can't believe this thread hasn't been locked...sheesh. In the good 'ol days it would have been locked and several people banned several pages ago.

RE: Patton vs MacArthur
I'm intrigued by Schom's belief that the US was as 'adequately prepared for war as any major power ever has been'. At least that's what the synopsis says.

Just goes to show, even historians don’t get it right all the time.ORIGINAL: anarchyintheuk

I just finished Barbara Tuchman’s “The First Salute”, and there was a ton of stuff – detail about sail, sailing, sailors, maneuver, gunnery, etc. – that was just … woof!! Didn’t detract from the thrust of the book though and certainly didn’t detract from Ms. Tuchman’s stature. Knowing better let me ride over the rough stuff with a grin (and a – gotcha! Barbara!).
Even the best of them have their foibles, but if you can take them with a grain of salt, they are sometimes quite revealing.

You ever read "A Distant Mirror"? Excellent portrayal of France during the 100-Years War, also by Tuchman. Very highly recommended.

Apparently not. When she grows up she'll starting eating chairs and tables... She hasn't walked off any piers lately, has she?

Darn Termie! That's one of my top 10 history books ever written! Don't often get to France, but one of the times I did, I made a pilgrimage to Chateau de Coucy. I like Barbara Tuchman, I like her a lot. She has a way of making things so ... present ... one hell of a good writer.ORIGINAL: Terminus

well... what a statement...
I don't think this thread will get locked, I think it will stay open until someone seriously screw up so someone can get banned for a long time... But, I don't think anyone will screw up, at least not that much, and for that reason I think this thread will stay open, and eventually die by itself within +/- 30 posts or so...
