Still quiet. The Allied CVTFs depart for the Coral Sea, moving into position to suppress the Nettie raids on PM. The heavy elements of the 24th (Sep) Infantry Regiment begin a flyin to Port Moresby from Cooktown.

The KB emerges and stonks PM from the Solomon Sea. My carriers continue towards the Torres Strait. An IJN naval guard force landing at Buna runs up against the Papuan Battalion.

The Allied carriers move to a position off Cooktown, while the KB moves to the Woodlark Islands. The current plan is for the Allied CVTFs to patrol to the SW of Port Moresby until the KB makes an aggressive move or the base facilities at PM are repaired and fortifications restored. Meanwhile subs are laying mines in the Saint Georges Channel.
Apparently, my opponent is planning to supply his division at PM by mountain tracks from Buna. I can move commandos into the Owen Stanley Mountains to put paid to that goal.

I loitered at the southern end of my patrol lane, and the KB also loitered off Woodlark Island. This coming day, I'll sail to the northern end and see what happens. The Netties at Rabaul are avoiding my air superiority zone, and my base repairs at Rabaul are proceeding. Once those are complete, I'll be able to refortify.
I have 450 or so aircraft with the fleet and about 200 land based air in the area. My opponent is shipping a second division to PM.
I have about 800 AV headed towards this hex:

The Great Coral Sea Turkey Shoot--my opponent got his Great Pacific Fleet Battle. Although I was trying to follow recommended CVTF operating procedures--all but one with 0 reaction following the same CVTF which was supposed --my CVTFs ended up spread all over the Coral Sea. The dozen Japanese carriers stuck together, producing a 135-Zero CAP. You Japanese fan boys, enjoy...

We're backing off to May 30th and picking up there. +1 to my opponent.

Why? What do you expect to happen differently?

I'll take a whole different approach to the problem of dealing with the KB. One that doesn't involve expecting a collection of CVTFs to stick together under a common CAP. A 12-carrier CVTF is basically invulnerable to both surface and air threats.

-1 to you. You made mistakes, you should live with that.

Fair enough. I used to play tournament chess, and this is a checkmate. We're moving back up the line to explore some alternatives.

RE: Jul 16/17
Well, this game is like chess where allied player eventually gets 20 new queens and 100 knights...
Of cource it's not my business, but I don't think it's a checkmate. Not even check.

Why do you think is comes even close to a checkmate ?
You lost 1 US CV,1 RN CV,a modern US BB and you will maybe lose a second RN CV. Even with the complete US Carrier and force sunk and the RN CV force withdrawn (at some point in the game that happens) the game is not a checkmate.
Took over my PBEM with 5 US CV, all modern US BB,around 15 CA/CLs and only one IJN CV (no IJN BB, no IJN CA, around 10 DD) sunk at begin of 1943 and the game is just a little bit more challenging but currently (2/44) the allies are on the offense on all fronts.
It is your game and if you want to rewind it is not a problem but
1.) you loose a nice challenge to turn around (which is not that hard) and
2.) in 1943 if you do not make any big mistakes the game gets quite easy to win if you have all your carriers.

However, he has almost all the modern Allied warships on the map surrounded and is about to move in with most of the Combined Fleet to mop up. It's a Battle of Trafalgar moment, with me as the French. That was the strategic goal of the IJN and he got it. Now if that doesn't count as a Japanese win, nothing does.

So, this IS a japanese win then, not a re do -because if it is, your opponent sure is generous.................
However, if it is a jap win, fair enough.
but only if a victory to japan is conceded.[:'(][:'(][:'(]

I conceded. We then discussed what to do next, looked at DaBabes C, and then I offered to continue from about six weeks earlier--which is when I adopted the strategy that sunk me. He gets to improve his play elsewhere and I get to try something new against his KB. At the end, I held Mindanao, the eastern DEI, parts of Sumatra, and was attacking in Burma, so there's room for improvement on his side, too.

RE: Jul 16/17
Herwin, you should change your AAR title then. [;)]
OTOH, why don´t you continue? Thats the things which can happen in the game.
All the time. The major CV battle create a new situation and the interesting
part is how to deal with the result.
Do you want to wait until you smash KB until you venture past the first CV engagement?

Yes, it should be WWII in the Pacific as the Japanese Planned It!
This was about the third CV engagement--just the first one that was decisive--Trafalgar-scale decisive.
