Got a question for you, Bruce. I was watching History last night, and they had something on the Deep Impact program, the one thats supposed to send something "the size of a washing machine" crashing into a comet. Could you please explain to me what exactly they hope to learn from smasking an 800 lbs object into a comet that isnt bothering anyone?

Could you please explain to me what exactly they hope to learn from smasking an 800 lbs object into a comet that isnt bothering anyone?

Probably will cause some vaporization of the comet, and then they can get spectroscopic readings to help determine the composition of the comet...
